Limited Run BK77 w/S30V and Micarta *Read for info from Kabar*, worth the $$$?

Just got off the phone with Ka-Bar, and they said they have a few more than 5 left, but not many.

Cool, I was sweating getting mine in a couple of weeks. Good to know, thanks for the info.

I got a factory second(loaded belt, tiny smears in the finish on the reverse side) from Toooj a couple years back. I don't think I'de pay $300 for it, but it is frickin sweet. He explained that Kabar got ahold of a batch of blanks from the old Cammilus run of 77's, hence the limited numbers. The price tag is mostly because it's a "premium" product, but there is $45 worth of steel involved, so that contributes to the price.

Doing some digging around, it looks like CPM S30V is the bees knees for knife steel. I was reading a paper written on premium steel and they all seem to be from Crucible.

Well, it was worth it to me. I put my order in for one of them. I called nearly all of the stores on their dealer list, but none of them had one. In fact most of them didn't even know what it was. When I called kaBar back to order one, the guy that answered the phone asked me if I had been on the forum. Apparently he had been getting a few calls already, when they heard that there were only 5 left. He said they had a few more than five, but not many. Now I can't wait to get it in my hot little hands! I've also got a San Mai Becker Necker coming from another store. Not too many dealers are carrying them, either.

I'm glad I pointed it out, still not sure if I'll get one..., I'm seriously torn, ZT0300 or this BK7...

S30V is the hottest knife steel these days, although there is another one on the horizon called S35VN, that is reputed to be even better. Chris Reeve is already making one of his models out of it. Knife steel is like electronics, as soon as you get the latest, and greatest, there is one even better comming right behind it!!! We just can't win, although it's a great excuse to buy more knives.:D

i heard rumors that crucible was going under and no more s30v from them? i'm sure someone else will make SOMETHING like it if they fail.

but the pricetag on the BK77? completely worth it imho... not just for the stainless hardware :)

the steel alone. the handles. decent sheath, but not the SpecOps the Cammy version had. iirc, there IS a slot for a BK13 Remora ;) plus the extra nice job they spent sharping, sharpening, and etching. very nice. plus, when they're gone, that's it. gone. consider this: they're mirror polished and pre-naked.. don't have to strip them, or polish them, and they pretty much WILL NOT RUST. work around salt water? need a BIG fish knife? there you .

a limited run of special BK13s in some exotic steel would be fun.

same for the BK14s... i bet those pre-naked in some quality stainless or other fun metal would be a winner.

also put it this way, if you buy one, and hate it, you can probably easily sell it. a year from? yes. 4 years from now? yes :> 500 years from now, they'll pull it from your dead hands in your burial mound... they'll wonder what mystery civilization could make such fine metal :) perhaps this person was a KING or a GOD to have such a blade.. mmm over time, they might find a few dozen of these, and wonder what race of elite being had such things.

Do you actually USE your 301?

Yes sir! I've only had it for a week but I've used it for some fire prep (it's been COLD out here in CA; it gets into the 50's at night!!) and it's spent a lot of time in the kitchen (ALL my knives have to do well there...new ones always get preference) and it's my favorite for just opening/closing while catching a hockey game (Go Kings!!). It is a bit heavy for me to edc as I have to wear 'business casual' at work; it's NO problem wearin' jeans. And it's just so...cool! Someone here makes custom scales and I know I already want to pick some up.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I think the problems at Crucible happened a while back. They have reorganized, and are back in business. Of course I suppose that they could be having problems again, but I sure hope not. Everything that I've read about it, says they are doing fine, now.

I wasn't even planning on buying another knife just now and everyone has me seriously considering it. Damn you Bladite for posting such a cool response. Part of me wishes I had never started this thread. I am waiting on a BK2, BK7, BK9, 2 x BK13-CPs and an RSK Mk2. Now the real question is, do I shell out 3 bills for another BK7 that I will put in a case and admire, or a ZT0300 that I will use sparingly?

My buddy at work used the logic that I should shell out for the BK7 since it's limited, then wait another month or 2 to pick up the ZT. Can anyone tell me if the value on these will actually appreciate? Even in a relatively short period of time, say a few years?

Thanks for reading.

You should do it Ark. just got mine today and pictures do not do the knife justice!! Its polished to a mirror finish, you won't be disappointed, I had the same hesitation of shelling out 3 bills

Well, in this particular instance, I'm hoping the difference between them is that the knives appreciate over time as opposed to becoming a commodity.

Can you post some pics? Maybe that will push me over the brink...
(Jeezus, I'm asking to be peer pressured into buying it)

You guys made me buy another knife...

I bought it from their website using my Xoom so I didn't know how to take a snapshot of the purchase screen... I didn't receive a confirmation e-mail or anything, should I be worried? Besides the fact you can place an order online, is Ka-Bar pretty much run like a brick & mortar business? Like I won't receive confirmation until someone checks their system tomorrow?

Looks like the ZT will have to wait for Summer.
