Limited Runs: In '16 it was the BK20, in '17 the BK29. '18...??

IIRC, E found out about the 29 the day before Kabar announced them -- when one landed on his doorstep, unannounced.

That's crazy.

I mean I guess it wasn't really his design so maybe they didn't have to tell him?

I don't know how the contract works between him and kabar but I would think they legally have to tell him that kind of stuff in advance.

They can call it a Becker since it has his handles, and they disclosed that E was not the designer on the website. Even if they broke a minor clause in contract they are still paying him what he is due, and he didn’t seem upset at all. Or maybe mailing him one the day before was their “covering of their a—es”!

yeah! it was probably still like a month later before i heard about it, and longer that i got one (i bought mine)

technically it's his bowie... but it's weird they did a special modified run on his design. i don't really know the whole story.

my understanding of how it all went down is this:
what ended up being the BK29 was the first proto for the BK20.
a handful were made and a couple of them made it to E's to be tested at a gathering.
then new drawings were submitted and the final BK20 proto was sent to E for more testing.
somehow, while the second proto was being tested and approved, the earlier drawing was submitted for a production run.
that error wasn't found until they were already blanked.
then the right BK20's were produced and it took Kabar a year or so to decide what they wanted to do with the accidental run.

Accidental Run? Easy sell them or sell them as special production if the number was to low.

So that's how they "made a new model" to do it.

I didn't like the relief edge on the spine so I just and went and got another BK 9.

This was on the truth about knives I knew I was reading about this somewhere just couldn't remember.

Says 500 made but I only remember there being about 475 bk20s and 375 bk29s

I don't know whether or not there is anything new on the horizon for us, but since we are speculating, I don't see a new release being a "Kephart" styled knife. ESEE just having released theirs makes me say that though. IF we were to see something new, I would hope for something smaller than the previous options, as personally I get a lot more use out of the mid to small blades. A "Kephart" styled blade would be really awesome though, and dang that knife is a great one.

Still hopeful for a Kephart/Becker blade, regardless. Twould be awesomeness. That said, I still tend to gravitate to the larger blades. To me, the BK9 is just it. (in case you didn't know) Gonna be hard to top that one. Uncle E hit that one out of the park, afaic. Now, if a .25" BK4 with an awesome blade geometry were released, it may, MAY I say, remove the 9 from the top of my list. ;)

Your probably right I didn't even think about the ESEE kephart. Still can't see how people would buy that with the handle they have on it. A becker kephart would be so much better.

I like that you call it a Tweener, brings back memories.

I dunno about the ESSE offering. Apart from it being a spear point, it’s not really a reproduction. Blade’s too tall, wrong grind, handle looks pretty damn uncomfortable. If Ethan actually wanted to design his take on the Kephart, I’m sure it would be far enough from the ESEE to be able to stand on its own.

I do wholeheartedly agree that to next offerings should be some smaller ones though (*cough cough bird and trout*). After a couple years of chopper releases, some smaller blades would be great.
