I've been pondering making a master-list of everything knives can be used for, for easy reference for people who ask about it and for ideas for myself. From everyday use to in the wild, obviously the focus here is out surviving in various climates and situations. I'll start with my loose knowledge, don't bother numbering them to save the time.

-Procure wood shavings for tinder
-Use with flint for sparks
-Baton firewood for fuel
-Cut various cord types for shelter/tools
-Carving wooden tools
-Skinning Game
-Food preparation
-Emergency weapon
-First Aid
-Digging, not ideal but works
-Opening cans
-Prybar
-Leaving engraved markings

Might be missing hundreds more for all I know, feel free to add them at your leisure, thanks in advance.

In some instances, the pommel can be used as a hammer. Also, you can use it for pinching split shot (actually done that one).

The handle could be used as a sort of fishing real, lash knife to staff = spear, use as direction finder, counter weight, razor.

Make joints (as in joinery), fixtures for structures, especially shelters.
Cutting, limbing for structures. Smoothing for structures to prevent,
sharp pieces from tearing clothing or tarps. (As wind beats a tarp the
tarp is easily be abraded, light nylon especially.)

Make triggers for traps.

Wear a big enough knife and nobody will mess with you. :D

But seriously, to strike fire using flint, hunting, and making primitive tools.

Hello?.....shaving.....when it is imperative that everyone in your group know that you are a badass.

Use it to peer around corners in case killer rabbits abound.

It could be lashed to a pole as a spear.

If you have two you can use them to stab your way up a sheer rock wall if you need to climb up like that peg board in gym class. I love to do that to impress the ladies, which is what survival is all about after all.

In all seriousness "making tools" is a subject that can and should be opened up as it is only limited by the medium which you are using.
  • bow, spindle, cup, fireboard.
  • bow and arrows
  • bowls, utensiles
  • as was said before shelter, pegs, fire spits
  • traps, snares
  • various fishing implements; hooks, floats

..So far with the excepton of batoning I haven't seen too many things on this list that couldn't be done or at least improvised with a sak.

* Cut Sh**

* Strike a flint or ferro rod

* Stab Sh**, for food or defense

(Those three pretty much sum up everything that a knife can and should be used for. Of course, the sub points for those can be endless. Notice I didn't include using it as a prybar or shovel.)

With my SAK, I can pick my teeth and hook onto things!
