Hi folks,

With the rising cost of knives I thought I started re-thinking some of my own choices and thought I would pass what I found along to you. In return, please send the rest of us your choices in keeping with the $38 limit.
This is a list of knives that can be currently bought for less than $38 that I use regularly and think are great values. Some knives that are my favorites did not make the list because the cost is too high. I have knives costing hundreds of dollars, both custom and production. These inexpensive knives have proven themselves and are worth the money and are better, in many ways than some expensive knives. They are certainly a smarter buy.

Neck Knife/Gear Knife
1. The Outdoor Edge WEDGE
I cannot say enough good things about this knife. The knife has a very useful and comfortable design. It slices like a laser beam because of the very wide, thin blade. It has enough point to do fine work. It has proven itself on game, fish, and in general utility by a lot of people. You will note that Spyderco has used a similar concept on their blades to enhance performance. The knife holds an edge decently and is very easily sharpened. It takes a wickedly sharp edge. The sheath clips the blade in so it cannot be dislodged, even under the rigors of white water rafting, hiking, and etc. It is adaptable for wearing around the neck, clipped to your pants, or on the straps of your gear as it has a clip on the back of the sheath, a hole for a chain and other options. It is not too long so it wears well, yet the handle is such you can grab and use it. Out of all such knives I own or have tried, this is my favorite, hands down. For $15.95 you will want to buy them as gifts and give them away, as I do. It is made in Taiwan, like many top Spyderco knives.

Folding Saltwater/EDC

2. The Benchmade Lone Wolf MINI-LANDSLIDE
I was surprised at this knife. I wanted something cheaper than my more expensive salt water knives so I ordered this one. Wow! It is a bright orange lock back. The lock is very thick and the blade spine is, too. The blade is made of N680 and is extremely corrosion resistant, as I have reason to know. The blade shape is great for skinning, gutting, and general use. The current version is the same approximate size and length of the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. The edge holds up very well, better than 420HC but not as good as my ancient Buck knives with 440C from the 1960’s. This is my current walking, camping, fishing knife, having replaced more expensive knives. A great knife that can be had for $27 to $37. I think it is made in the USA, the company is American, anyway.

Everyday Carry

3. Leatherman STYLE
This cool little knife goes where I go. It is smaller than a small Swiss Army Knife, but the blade is bigger. It has a knife, scissors, file, screw driver, and tweezers all in a small, trim package. It costs a whopping $13.95. It is made in the USA.

4. Victorinox ALOX CADET
This is a wonderful, slim knife that comes in a choice of colors. It sells for about $24.95 and boasts a bunch of useful tools. It has a knife blade, nail file, two screw drivers, a can opener, bottle opener, and a wire stripper. I love this knife and it often goes with me into places where other knives are frowned upon. One country lists Swiss Army Knives, this one included, as a tool, and not a knife. Therefore it is legal to carry where all others are banned. In one country I frequent, knives might get you arrested, though they are not illegal. But this knife is accepted and you will not be bothers. I do not like SAK’s in general, but I love this knife.

5. The Kershaw LEEK
This slim gentleman’s/gentlewoman’s knife is still available for $34.95, unless you want fancy colors. It has great steel and is very sophisticated looking. It opens with the Speed-Safe assisted opening and the blade is useful for a multitude of everyday tasks around home and office. However, do not let the slim lines fool you. The 14C27N steel blade is a full 3 inches long. This is a great pocket knife, purse knife, and general duty knife you never tire of taking out and looking for tasks to put it through. It is made in the USA.

Fixed Blade Hunting and Camping

6. The Kershaw SKINNER
This knife is about the same size as the ESEE Izula but comes with stainless 14C28N steel for the 2 3/8” blade. I like the bright orange version. It is a great skinning knife and the edge stays sharp longer than some knives with “super” steel blades. It has great ergonomics and comes with a leather sheath. The G10 scales are removable for cleaning or in case you want to cord wrap the handle. It is made in the USA and only $30.

7. The Kershaw FIELD KNIFE
This knife has a great shape and it boasts a 3 ¼” 14C28N stainless steel blade. Its design is unusual looking but is very useful. It has G10 scales that are removable for cleaning and a leather sheath. All of this and made in the USA for only $34.95.

Folding Hard Use

8. The Cold Steel MINI-RECON
This knife sports a very tough 3 inch AUS8A blade. It has the seemingly indestructible Triad Lock. It will take the abuse and keep coming back for more. It is currently being offered for $31.95.

Well, there you have it. I would like to hear your choices. Please keep the actual current selling price below $38.

I'll add a few..

Boker Subcom/Wharcom - Aus8, under $30, and a great little knife. Makes a nice $ clip too.

Boker Trance - Aus8, under $38, and fits my large hand well. Blade under 3 inches so good for MI carry (part of my edc knife rotation).

Kabar Dozier - Aus8a, under $20 and comes in several colors. Nothing fancy but a solid knife for $20.

Ontario Rat 1/2 - Aus8. Many color choices and the most expensive tops out at $36 or so. These are on everyone's best buy list.

Opinels - Personally not my style but most under $20 and many folks like them. Another consistent item on best buy lists.

Mora fixed blade - Most under $20. If you don't have one... Tons of options and colors. Another on everyone's best buy list.

EDIT:
Kershaw Emerson lineup - I've handled a few and the fnf is pretty darn good and price fits in under $38. 8 models to choose from.

Byrd from Spyderco - Nothing fancy but a solid knife in many different sizes. Most (all?) come in under $38.

CRKT Ripple makes a nice and cheap classy folder.
Spyderco Tenacious was my first Spyderco and got me wanting more.
Kershaw Thermite offers a lot of knife for the money.
And last but not least I've been extrememly impressed with the Kershaw/Emerson line. My 6K has been seeing a lot more pocket time than I expected.

And I've got to agree with incision, the Ontario Utilitac is a ridiculous bargin.

There are a lot of good knives. But the ones I actually use that are LESS than $38 are those listed. How many USE these knives? What knives do you use regularly that are in the price range currently?

I cycle through the knives I've carried, so the Spyderco/Byrds, Kershaws, CRKT, Utilitacs...all stuff I've carried and used. I don't use fixed blades often, but the quality on stuff like the Moras, GI Tanto, etc are easy to see and easy to test.

DocT, great post! What would be the next two price vs value groupings? Diminishing returns/dollar value for a "quality knife"?

The Ontario Rats/Utilitac for sure.

These absolutely can't be beat for the money that you pay. My Rat II was $26.95. I'd probably have been willing to pay near double for that and still been happy with it.

Also, Cold Steel. Especially with the sale price that many of the Recons and Hold Outs have been going for lately.

The only thing I really have to add that hasn't already been said are the ESEE Zancudo and Avispa. They are on equal footing with the Ontario Rats in quality although the designs aren't quite as good, IMO; however, they are still an amazing value.

Of my list, I sold off my Byrds, Subcoms/Wharcoms, and Doziers since they didn't get much pocket time anymore. I've been in a downsizing mode for awhile now. The Trance still gets pocket time. My main carry is a Spyderco Delica 4 FFG (purple and blue) off the forums here for <=$45.

I've had my eye on a Rat 2 or Kershaw Emerson but I really don't need another knife. Plus funds are tight due to my downgraded job.

I only use knives in that price range. ;)

Here are a few that haven't been mentioned yet:

* Wenger knives are showing up here-and-there at closeout prices. Recently bought a Wenger Evolution S10 for $11.

* AG Russell Hunters Scalpel. This is my most-carried knife. $20, very safe and secure locking sheath, and AUS10 steel.

* The KaBar leather stacked hunting knives are an excellent bargain. The knives themselves are made in Taiwan and the over-built leather sheathes are from Mexico.

* Everyone knows Mora are a useful low-price choice for hunting, hiking, and camping. But there are basic models from other similar brands also in the sub-$38 price range: Marttiini, Järvenpää, and Lapin Puukko.

That is a good question Clan Gunn. This category is pretty big so I will limit it to those I own and use. These knives in this category generally sell from $38 to $85 currently and are good values. This does not mean there may be 'better' knives out there, but for the price point I have had good luck with these. The higher end knives I will have write about later.

Neck Knife/Gear Knife
1. Esee IZULA
What is there to say about this knife that has not already been said? It is a fantastic little knife that can serve for a neck knife, outdoor survival knife, gear knife, fixed blade hunting knife, and even a pocket knife. It comes in many colors such as purple, several shades of green, black, and orange, to name a few. You can have it with or without handle scales. The sheath is limitlessly adaptable with a clip plate, mole lock, tek lok, or without these using paracord or chain. This is a great knife for outdoors but I still prefer the WEDGE for around town as it does not get in my way. The Izula has a longer handle. The Izula is one tough little knife and is the one I stick on my belt or around my neck when doing outdoor activities. This great value knife is made in the USA and starts at around $42.

Everyday Carry
2. Spyderco MANBUG G10
This is a classy looking small knife. The VG10 blade is just shy of 2 inches but it is a very capable knife. The blade design is perfect over a wide variety of tasks from opening mail, to skinning out a small animal to cook and eat. The bolsters give the knife a classic traditional look and the grey G10 scales add a modern touch. The fit and finish on mine is perfect. This is a wonderful knife and sells around $71.

3. Spyderco DRAGONFLY G10
This is my favorite EDC knife. It stays in my pocket more than any other knife. It is the perfect size to carry all the time and still be useful. It is not too big and not too small. As Goldilocks said, “It is just right.” It performs all out of proportion to its size and it is good looking. The fit and finish on mine is perfect, as good, in fact, as some of my high end custom knives. The VG10 blade is about 2 ¼” in length and the knife sells for $85.

4. The Spyderco CAT G10
This knife really surprised me with its quality for the money. It came from the factory finished better than my far more expensive Chaparral. I do not fancy liner locks for pocket carry, but this one I truly like. It is just the right size. The 440C blade is about 2 ½” long and the black G10 scales are first class. This knife was worth the price of $43. It is a best value.

Fixed Blade Hunting/Camping
5. The Kershaw DISKIN HUNTER
This knife replaced my older hunting knives and some custom knives. While my custom knives are ‘prettier’ this one has done the job well and is cheap enough I do not have to worry about it. The 14C28N blade is 4 5/8” long and holds an edge very well, indeed. This made in the USA knife is only $51 and out performs many knives costing much, much more.

6. Buck SKINNER 103
I carried this knife while being stationed in Alaska. Often I would have to build shelters, and generally make due in the wilderness for more than a month at a time, many times a year, in all conditions. This knife never let me down. It has skinned deer (still one of the best for this), cut tree limbs, rope and para-cord, dug trenches, and anything else I have tasked it to do. Mine is a much older version but it is still the toughest knife I have ever owned. It holds an edge extremely well. The only downside is that it is also very hard to sharpen. A diamond hone is essential, at least on my old model. The blade is 4 inches long and the handles are black phenolic. You can’t destroy it unless you foolishly set out to do so. This great value is only about $49.95 and made in the USA and is a great value.

Camp Knife
7. Buck GENERAL 120
I have used this knife for camp chores for decades and it is still with me after all these years. The 7 3/8 inch blade is large enough for all camp chores and is tougher than nails. It is hard to sharpen but stays that way for a long time. Mine has black phenolic handles that have been beat on and still are fine. This made in the USA knife is about $69.95 and is a great value.

Large Folder
RAT 1 or Buck 110.

Small Fixed Blade
Dean Oliver/River Trader Tiny French Trade Knife ($42 shipped). I love this knife, once I get a belt sheath made for it, it will never leave me.

Large Camp/Utility Knife
Condor Mountain Camp Knife. I think I paid $17 on sale for this, sheath is only ok, but it's a great very large knife.

Honorable Mention
Bear and Son Stag Wharncliffe Lockback. $35, but it had finish issues, hence the honorable mention. Once it had some work put into it, it became my favorite knife, but out of the box it needed quite a bit of work.

My list:

-Spyderco value line (tenacious, persistence, etc.)

-Kershaw Tremor

-Crkt Ripple

-Sog Flash 1

-Kershaw Skyline

-And I guess almost every other Kershaw.

Yes, Coloradospyderco, those Spyderco value knives are hard to beat. I almost bought the Persistence and did not include it because I do not have one. It looks like a great knife. I bought the Cat because of country of origin and I am more familiar with 440C characteristics.
How has it held up to use?
