Little Giant 50 road trip/Update 11-04

hi All, well yesturday I bead blasted all the "parts", which took more time than I thought. Also got the motor mount "corrected" as for some reason they didnt have it right from the factory, long story, but now its "fixed" and as it should be.

Got everything painted and will start putting it together. Going to mount on a 6x6 wood base for now, and when I add on to the shop It will be on a 4 foot slab.

The serial # is 7297, these late hammers are a bit mixed up in # as they left the factory, but my guess is mid 60's judging by the motor... GE stopped making this motor frame size in 63-64 according to my motor shop guy.

I have been trying to call Sid for a week or so, no answer, he may be avoiding me though... may think im stalking him with all the calls lately!

Awesome thread Matt!!! But we needz more pictures!!! :D

As fast as you got this thing better than new, I should start trying to convince you to come to Washington for a couple weeks... both my LG's are down and need love! :D

Don, thanks for the photo, I just hate you more now! :p ;)

Dave and Kentucky, thanks again for the photos. I know a lot of guys say you don't need a brake if the hammer is really tuned in, but after watching the WildRose videos, I can see where it would be a nice feature. I got to spend a couple days in an ornamental blacksmith's shop, and he had 4 LG's among his 10 hammers, and HIS finely tuned LG's all ran just as smooth and consistent as the Sahinler and Nazel 3B.... But I've also seen a couple 25's that were so erratic, you'd only be able to convince those guys from the show JackAss to actually step on the treadle. ;)

hard for me to stop and take pics when im in "work" mode, hell i forget to eat all day when im in the zone. I decided to let the paint set a little longer, and will get it together tommorow.

I did at least get it in the shop yesturday, just in time as its raining today.

Excuses, excuses...:) I know what ya mean, I don't take pics when I'm in the working zone either.

I got the roof on my house finished late yesterday, started raining last night. Cuttin it close!

on a sidenote, Im getting the Beaudry #7 in position for a test run soon too.... finally.

Wont be in its permanent spot, but at least under a roof and under power so I can give it some attention.

I finished splitting and stacking my firewood yesterday. This morning there is snow on surrounding ridges. I'm cutting it close too.

I know this hammer is gonna look good all pointed up and new. It may convince me to do mine after all. Heck, winter's gonna drive me indoors soon anyway.

I saw that hammer over at IForgeIron. That thing is amazing. One day I need to have a Beaudry as well. Congratulations on that!

Karl, I knew you had a real late model too, didnt realize they were that close. Do you know when yours was sold originally??

No, I really don't at this sitting, but I know who bought it and he's dead!
They only went up to 7363 in '84, so there were only 60 more made after mine. Maybe Sid would know what their production was like during that time and we might be able to guess.

Matt,

The best time to get a hold of Sid is in the afternoon. Keri's usually to work by then and she'll be happy to take care of your questions.

For those interested. I know where the last 50#er is. Actually it's never been assembled. Don's hammer sat right next to it for quite awhile.

Just got off the phone with Sid, the hammer was originally sold 5-15-64 to the City of Oklahoma/Airport division, for Will Rogers Airport. Matches up perfect with what the guy I bought it from said, his grandfather ran a salvage yard and bought it at an Airport auction.

Hi Dave, I've actually been thinking about that hammer. Cool that Sid has the first 25, last 25, last 50 and last 100 (or next to last ;)).

Dang, I'm older than that hammer. :grumpy:

Haha! Too funny :)

My Great Uncle was over visiting Grandma (she lives 3 houses away from my old place) the day after I brought home my 50# LG. Uncle Frank is a real smart-ass, so sometimes I like to dish a little back his way. I said, "Hey Uncle Frank, this hammer was made the same year you were... but unlike you, it was only used for 8 years and then put away in a barn." :D

"You don't know when I was born!" he laughed....

"1928, just like the hammer." ;) :)

Hey, feel better. You guys are at least a little younger than my hammer- #950, sold new in 1906.
