Little Giant 50 road trip/Update 11-04

O.K. for all you guys wanting more pics, I took a few today. Things went real well during assembly, it was a bit tricky getting that spring compressed by myself with a cheapo bar clamp! Luckily the bar clamp stayed put and didnt allow the spring to shoot out at me.

So basically what I have done since the hammer arrived is disassemble, clean/bead blast, clear all oil holes, clean up pitting on shaft (under main caps), paint and reassemble/adjust guides etc. I also cleaned out the grease fittings and pumped in new grease until all the old crap was out. Also used a fairly light oil in all the oil holes to flush out anything I may have missed, after this I will switch to a thicker "bar" oil.

Also after painting I wire wheeled all the paint off the contact areas of the ram/guides. I will put the motor on monday, and get the treadle on after I move it to its "spot", its easier to move without the treadle.

here are a few pics-

thanks all, I cant get back to it until monday, kinda hurts to be so close but not able to work on it over the weekend. By mid week, or as soon as I can get the electricians out it will be running. Will get a video of it running or at least make an attempt, never shot a video before... not even sure if my out of date Walmart camera will shoot vid.

Quick question Matt, Your are going to run a three horse motor right?

It's looking great.

Dave from Diller

yeah Dons right, its a 2hp 3 phase, original. If I were going to run a single phase I may jump to a 3 but im guessing the motor I have will run it fine. Im torn now wether to mount it on a 6x6 wood base or directly to the concrete with a piece of plywood or conveyor belting between the hammer/slab.

Will get the motor mounted today, and make the decision how to mount it. With a little luck I can get the electrician out this afternoon or tommorow.

thanks Nick, I really got lucky with this one as far as condition goes... I would call it "better" then new now as I fixed the motor mount, and have the guides adjusted correctly, they had them set up way too loose from the "factory". From the talks ive had with Sid and Don, the 60's at Little Giant were an era that most of the "old" hammer guys had already died or retired, and at this point the LG company was doing more casting then hammer making. This would explain alot of the odd set up and parts mixes you find on real late hammers.

Should have some more pics tonight, spent yesturday getting my Beaudry under a roof so I can start working on it.

This hammer thread has been great, but I wanna see a thread about the Beaudry. That thing is beautiful. I'm envious.

the Beaudry thread will be coming soon, have to get this LG making me some $$ first!! STILL WAITING FOR THE ELECTRICIAN TO CALL ME!!
