Little thought of super steel SHTF reality

If the SHFT........ my biggest concern is going to dealing with not being able to feed my knife addiction.....
How am I going to buy new knives !!!
Your going to give me nightmares with talk like this...
And I have a nice selection of basic steels like D2, 440, etc.
I need a drink.....

It's like 9am, you gotta at least wait until noon to grab a drink

While ceramic rods wear very slowly, they do lose effectiveness over time as they become harder to clean. I've heard of some folks eventually using a diamond abrasive to coarsen up a ceramic rod that has become smooth from 'overloading' but it's tricky, and most will just opt to buy new replacement ceramic rods instead. I'm in the latter camp, myself.

Point is, nothing lasts forever. *shrug*

Yeah a new rod is like what, $20? Not worth my time to try and recover it. I will say that I wash mine with soap and water every month and it gets a lot of stuff off though.

It’s been my experience that if you want to clean a ceramic rod, stone, etc….nothing beats a Pink Pearl eraser. Of course YMMV.

Bar Keepers Friend does great on ceramic Sharpmaker rods.

If you're genuinely worried about that kind of scenario your time and money are far better spent learning permaculture, how to grow food, filter water, make and repair clothing and finding communities of like minded people with skills you don't have than worrying about your knife collection.

If, on the other hand, this is just a new angle that you'd like to approach the hobby from, go for it.

It's nice to know that 1st world problems will survive even the apocalypse.

You haven't lived till you have sharpened a Swiss style lil folder (tweezer edition) on a rock till its sharp enough to cut flesh. Circa 1989 (8-9 yo) Any durable steel hc or ss will work, if you know how to use and sharpen it. The base of your camp and shtf bag should look the same imho. If ya want make 2 and keep one handy.

You can sharpen super steels on materials other than diamond and cbn. But, either way, I own many knives made out of 1095cv, so no big deal either way. Beside, a fixed blade would be better to carry than a folder... So I'm set in that case.

You are going to change your knife collection because you think society will collapse to the point of a Mad Max/Fallout style wasteland?

Already bought a Cold Steel Magnum Warcraft Tanto XL for the 3V chippity choppities and a Spyderco Darn Dao for dramatic slashing attacks against water thieves in confined spaces, like a water closet. And I have a SanRenMu Land in case I need to go across a lot of land.
