Load up a CamelBak MULE-pretty pic heavy!

And ROCK6, those pouches fit great. Small enough to not add a ton of weight, but they have plenty of space to spread out my FAK and some food and little gear...

FYI, I was at Cabelas here in Kansas City and their Military MULEs were marked down to $49 from $125. Since a replacement bladder is $30, I figured this is a helluva buy.

As for the concerns of cleaning them, as long as you don't put any sugary liquids in there you shouldn't have any issues. When I get back from the woods/hike/amusement park I just dump all the water out and hang it in a dark closet to air dry. To deep clean it I buy some Efferdent or Polident denture cleaner (non-scented, 80 tablests @ $3) fill it up half way and drop two tabs in the bladder. Let it sit about an hour and you have a fresh and clean bladder. Plus cheaper than CB version of the tablets.

I wonder if the price drop is still effective down here. If so, I might buy a few more to have when others tag along on my hikes.

It's worth checking out.

If nothing else, you could probably list them on eBay and make some profits to buy more goodies. :)

Well all the original pictures dont show anymore, anyway to repost them? I was hoping to drool over a HAWG

I finally re-loaded the MULE pics. As soon as I have some time, maybe Monday, I will post updated pics with the pouches from ROCK6 and the surplus.

Also, a little birdy, or maybe it was the Cabela's ad, told me about a certain sporting goods retailers with MULES on sale for $30 again.

That's pretty cheap. Personally, I don't like the thought of a 500cc pack. I have a slightly larger Camelback and it isn't large enough for anything useful. I'm also not a fan of the water bladder systems. I've taken the bladder out of my packs. A canteen/nalgene and cup are always with me.

Further advice, take it or leave it:

--Lose about 5 of the knives and carry a poncho/tarp. You'll use it every time you spend the night.

--You also need some water purification tabs at a minimum. How are you purifying water? Boiling it in the bladder?

--I've had bad experiences with those knockoff military style lensatic compasses from Taiwan/China. I wouldn't trust one. And a Silva is lighter anyway.

Have fun!

I was at Cabelas yesterday here in KC and they were out. TThey were, I believe, 29.00 and they said you could be a raincheck. They had been out of them for awhile. I have pulled the end off the water feed tube and used a homemade snake. Take some weedwhacker line, heat the end so you can flatten it out, cut a slot, and pull a rag through the slot, feed the line through the tube and pull it out. You can also form the end of the line into a melted ball, make the opposite end of the line sharp. Poke it thru a gun cleaning patch and pull it thru. It is my on the cheap, lightweight gun cleaning kit and it will work for cleaning out your water tube.

There are only 5 knives there, if I was to remove 5 of them, I would have no knife and then I would have to question the usefulness of a tarp. :D Also, I carry a rain fly from an old, retired tent that does wonders, I just couldn't find it for the pic.

I love the obvious condescending sarcasm here, but no, I carry tabs. Again...not in the pic for some reason. Updated pics will show. I am working on that if I can get some new batteries for my camera. Charger broke.

Compass has been swapped out. However, that one holds the same bearing as the Brunton I picked up.

loosearrow...thanks for the tip. Have you figured out a way to dry those bladders w/o buying the kit? I tried bending wire hangers and it doesn't seem to work well. I may just break down and buy the $20-ish kit.

Calm down, man. Just asking a question. t can be done just as water can be boiled in a nalgene, I just don't find it very practical to rely on doing it that way.

Fragility was the problem I had with two of them. I bought them thinking I'm too cheap to buy a milspec lensatic, but at least these will be more rugged. They weren't.

Great idea. I don't carry the bladder because I absolutely hate cleaning it. This tip for cleaning the tube is great - Thanks!
