Loaner Knives-Thoughts and Horror Stories?

A few yrs ago I purchased an absolutely beautiful custom off the makers forum here. Like a fool I lent it to my best friends son who was going elk hunting. Never saw it again. His son never returned it but I never told my buddy but was kind of pissed for sure. Just sayin

Come to think of it, in high school I lent knives to two of my friends to use on hunting trips. On both occasions the knives seemingly vanished at the end of the weekend and I never saw them again. Really chapped my biscuits.

On another hunting trip I lent a knife to a buddy while I taught him how to field dress a deer. He did fine until the end when he dramatically tried to stick the knife tip down into the dirt. We were in the Texas hill country where the ground is 98% limestone and 1% dirt (the other 1% is spiky stuff). The knife didn't go in at all. I didn't get too mad until he tried to push again, harder, thinking it still might work. It was a Boker Dozier skinner, so not much to cry about.

Now I rarely loan anything out that I'm not willing to lose forever.

Loaner knives? Absolutely not. I do not loan my knives (or tools) to anyone, much less someone who I either don't know, or do know and know they aren't knife people. I have no issue telling someone "Sorry, can't help you" right to their face, even after they've pointed out the pocket clip sticking to my pocket. Not trying to sound mean or like a tough guy, I'm just an adult who sets consistent boundaries* and I'm not going to let someone else abuse the fine tools I carry.

That said, I have been known to ask to be shown what needs cutting, and if it's something non-abusive, I'll do it. That's as far as it goes, though.

* Something that most people frown on others doing, especially when it inconveniences them.
I couldn't have said it better...

Early when I started making, I was needing feedback.
I made a loner/pass around edc Hunter style knife for some of the guys at work.
They were only supposed to keep it for a couple weeks.
Seven months later one guy would only return it once I made him another.....

I never got any pictures like I requested but I did get it returned.....edge damaged, blood stains, and missing sheath.

Abused on deer hunts, carpet removal, and backroom dealings......idk?
It looked Bad.

Tried cleaning it up, not sure what I'm going to do with it?

I will spontaneously conjure a comment upon request to borrow my knife, from among several possible sources, being passive aggression, condescension, kind admonishment, or (if it were possible) a combination of these.

Show it here

I had to dig through my phone for the old pics, I think these are right.... I didn't have any New condition looking pictures. But it was ok looking with a slim handle, & vintage black Micarta.

Returned looking:

After some clean-up (still haggard) but after grinding most of the Blood off.....

“I could lend you my knife, if I were willing to risk it being cluelessly abused”

“I have a contract here for you to assume liability and then once you have paid a non-refundable deposit of 30% the retail value of the knife you may use it. Failure to return it in the same or better condition will result in the following penalties. Sign your agreement here and the knife is all yours for seventy seven seconds.”

Ya.. I feel this one.
I loan my knife to the wifey; during Christmas I’m the one everyone turns to.
Usually they ask for me to do it though.

Knife pic for convenience.

I let my buddy borrow my knife one day. He promptly dropped it tip first on the concrete! 😖 it was a Benchmade Rift and it took my a couple hours to bring the tip somewhat back.

Another more recent time I loaned my knife to a kid I was working with ( yeah I know 🥴 ) and before I got the words “be very careful it’s sharp” out of my mouth he turned back to me with blood everywhere on his hands and on my knife. 😩

Now I don’t lend ANY knife I’m carrying to anyone.

I guess you could say I’m a bit of an asshole when it comes to this. If a guy asks to borrow my knife not only do I flat out say no I also will call out their manhood. A knife is like a dick. You either have one or you don’t.
Is it a Drew Carry joke i remember? Allow me to plagiarize: my knife is so big it has its own knife, and even its knife is bigger than your knife.

And no, you can't borrow that one, either.
