Lock Strength - Kershaw Leek vs Cold Steel Hold Out III

Was not expecting that from the Leek. Although it may have had slightly less momentum on the spine whack due to its lower weight, it took all five blows without folding. Impressive.

You don't have a knife collection, if you don't have a Leek.

Fantastic knife that only has a few shortcomings. The pocket clip, while fine for jeans, sux for casual work slacks, which is odd because this is an elegant knife suited to office EDC carry. The steel could be better, although it sharpens easily to ridiculous edge. I have a plain edge and a composite blade with the D2 edge.

I wouldn't be buying Cold Steel if I hadn't gotten the bug for nicer knives starting with the Kershaw Leek/Chive/Scallion series.

Every time you post, i LOL. Just buy the Buck Marksman if u like it that much. I'm sure it will satisfy your delusions.

I all ready have a buck marksman and a cold steel I just REALLY want to know who would win I think the marksman would win but I don't want to spend the money to find out on my own lol

I know I'm cheap

Marksman is a good knife for sure, and it doesn't really matter whether it win or not, as long as you like it and use it hard. I'm sure CS will test it one day since it has been mentioned in almost every test videos CS posted.
BTW as I mentioned in the other thread, Marksman has similar lock to the Wildsteer WX that CS tested vs Espada, except that marksman doesn't have secondary lock like wildsteer. You can probably refer to that test to get a rough idea.

As much as I like the Leek I could have saved everyone a lot of trouble. I knew the knife would fail on the weight test. I am surprised about the spine whacks, though. Liner locks and frame locks are just not that strong. A back lock is much better, as the Triad Lock continues to prove. Just for fun, I wonder how a Buck 110 would fair in such a test. I predict it would fail the spine whack after 4, but hold a good bit of weight. My 2 cents.

Similar yes but the spyderco power lock is very similar to the tri-ad lock and it failed way before the CS did.

Anyway who ever the winner it will be a fun test for sure

Except it does matter especially to CRKT. [emoji317]

Not gonna lie, all these lock strength videos are actually starting to drive me away from buying another Cold Steel product. It seems to me that this whole dick measuring contest is getting to be more their focus as of late.

It would be more interesting if the tests involved anything that a person actually does with a knife.

My car isn't a piece of shit because it doesn't float. If another manufacturer made one that does, it's not going to make me buy it based on the less than one percent chance that I drive into a lake. Especially when it isn't made here in America.

I use the sharp side of the blade for cutting things. I don't use the dull side for hammering, or the whole unit for hanging things off of.

scoutchris,

Please watch your language in the open sub-forums.

This is a warning with no points attached; a repeat performance will result in an infraction...

Thanks.

Dear Cold Steel,

No one gives a fuck about your one patent that matters.
:(That's pretty harsh. I am not too happy with these apples and oranges comparisons either, but I do want Cold Steel to continue to be an active participant in our forum. It is bad enough that Sog and Kershaw recently bailed. Respect.

I am totally unsuprised if the Leek came up a short compared to the Hold Out. I don't need to watch the video. I can predict what will happen. I think we all know.

Cold Steel fills the hard use/"I don't care If I ding this knife up" niche, in my collection. I like to carry other knives like the Leek when there is less chance that I will actually need to use a knife. Now that they have upgraded their steel, and raised their prices, I may be less likely to purchase, and "hard use" their newer knives. Time will tell.

I agree that these tests aren't ever going to get me to pick a CS folder over a design I like from another brand because lock strength is only of middling concern, to me.

That said, they are making all of those other tactical, hard-use, spec lolps brands look silly with these videos. If I really did need a folder that I could open, turn it around and use the spine as a hammer without worry, I know where to get one.

I give all the credit to Demko, however. The Triad is brilliant and will likely be the strongest lock out there for a long time.

Do you agree that most people would be all over a sub-$90 CTS-XHP full size framelock, hell, even slipjoint with decent F&F?

Why not have that knife, but with a lock that's redundantly strong? What do you have to lose?

Doesn't matter if the company is acting like a douche. I'd rather pay more to a company that has better ethics
