A theoretical question, if you were lock out on your office balcony with nothing on you but your 1000+ dollar custom knife,
you cannot call for help or jump down, but the door gap is large enough for you to jimmy the lock, what would you do?

A. Wait till tomorrow morning when people come back to work and sleep on the balcony

or

B. Risk damaging the tip of your knife and scratching up the blade of your 1000+ dollar knife to get in

As long as the blade is satin finish, I'm getting in. I'll wait if the blade is coated.

I once cut a soda can with my ZT350, and it scratched the hell out of the coating. I couldn't stand it, so I traded it. The blade has to be perfect finish for me. It's my OCD...

Just an fyi, that soda can might not have actually scratched the dlc coating, it embedded aluminum in the finish. Aluminum is softer than dlc coating, so unless there was some sort of large impurities in the aluminum, it's doubtful a soda can would damage the finish and those "scratches" would have likely have come right out with a bit of soap and elbow grease.

I might try breaking the door first.

Then I would act like I was gonna jump. That would prompt a quick rescue response!

Hard to say. I don't got a $1000 custom knife.
I think that if I were carrying one, I'd be prepared to use it.

I also think that I'd not be stupid enough to get locked out in the first place. (Engineering Root Cause Analysis)

Think I try sacrificing my credit cards first, if I need to I cut said credit cards to make them fit and work. I have no intent on purposely destroying a nice knife that cost $1000 (let alone think I ever buy one that expensive) so I come up with something. I also typically check locks before closing a door for precisely this reason and have a phone on me at all times when I leave the house for emergencies, as well as 2 cheap knives on my keychain which double as multi-tools/backup knife small SAK and leatherman micra so this is a very unlikely scenario for me.

Let me put it this way, the coating on my three hundred dollar knife has dings in it from splitting brass stage pin terminals. If I were in the position of being able to carry a 1,000 knife, I would be in the position to use a 1,000 knife. Though the most expensive knife I've seen that I might want to own to carry was $895. Anything I've wanted that was more expensive wouldn't be practical to EDC.

Oh, you gotta use it. Come on now!

If I can use ANY knife I am carrying to get me out of a crappy situation, I'm gonna do it. A knife to me isn't just an accessory like a hat or something.

Question: why does anyone carry a knife they are not prepared to use?

This isn't really an issue of using a knife or not, the OP's situation is weather you are prepared to put a $1000+ custom knife to task with a high possibility of damage.

I would wait it out but if my life depended on not being outside overnight I'd be slamming that blade right in there.

Alternatively - I would use my phone to call for help, or use my specialist knowledge from watching Bear Grylls and work out an escape route.

Yes I would use the Busse custom shop MOAB to hack and slash through the door and if something would happen to it, u all know what to do :) send it to Jerry and its new again.

One slight flaw - EDC'ing a MOAB at an office job?

Who leaves their house without:

1. Knife
2. Flashlight
3. Wallet
4. Cell Phone
5. Keys
6. Firearm
7. Surface to air missile
8. Lock pick set

That would just be irresponsible and ludicrous. :)

Short answer: I'm a pro door kicker. Three dead bolts into a 2x6 jam = two kicks.

I have 3 lock pick sets that are in my wallet,, on my keys and in my BOB, not to mention the full sets I've assembled at home. It don't take much more than practice to become adequate with a pick, one ya learn how you can make a useful pick outta almost anything.

Finally, I've never seen a balcony that didn't have some kinda window to see out on the balcony, the scenario you describe is either so rare as to never be concern or more likely doesn't exist. There's always another alternative, give me a pic of the balcony your concerns about and I'll tell you how to get back in, I repeat, there's always another way.
