Log this bear: dead

Why dont we ask Cynic1 if this really was possible, oh and the guy that choked the bobcat, did all this really happen cynic1?, being that a month ago, it wouldnt be possible if someone was attacked from out of the blue by a dog.
just wonderin.

If the bear walked right into the campsite and took the cooler with the family nearby, the bear was already a "junk" bear from eating human food in the past.

"A fed bear is a dead bear."

A block-of-wood-to-the-head should also go to the careless people who habituated the bear in the first place.

A quote from Dad " He said his pistol and his hunting knife were packed away."

Lucky toss with the fire wood , but , " pistol packed away "

My first reaction was that they shouldn't have food lying around, but they didn't -- they were eating.

This second story suggests the area was pretty dense with campers, and every one of them could have been aware there was a bear with cubs in the area.

The rangers have a job ahead of them, educating so many visitors about proper procedure. It sounds like they may not have been doing too well at it.

As with most stories of this type, we may never know the "real story". What we have is something written by someone who is a probably a product of some journalism school.

Have you ever been interviewed by a reporter? I have, several times, and what ended up in the paper had no relation to what I told the morons. When I called one lady reporter and asked why she wrote what she did, she told me that she had the right to edit my statements to fit her "style" of writing. :grumpy:

IF(BIG IF) this story is accurate, the kid going after the bear with a shovel has to be one of the stupidest things I have heard in a long time. IF the father really got a ticket, he should take it to court. What? You are not allowed to eat in your camp site? BS!

Gee. Without Riddleberger speaking in circles, we wouldn't know how to conduct ourselves in the woods. I always appreciate it when one of these types appears on the scene and explains to us idiots a "key thing to learn". He also saw the wisdom in citing someone for defending themselves. Regards,ss.
Methinks Riddleberger may be related to Mr.s Grundy!
A wilderness bureaucrat.lol!
:)

The man isn't a hero he's a damn idiot and as an ex-marine he should have known better to secure his campsite. His kid needs a good beating to for throwing a shovel at a bear. In Australia if you do something stupid and survive your not called a hero your called a bloody idiot.

These are not slothful Koala bears xinel. Bears here can outrun run the best Olympic miler and eat you and your little dog Toto too before you can down a Foster's. And, this happens here regularly.

I get bears roaming through my neighborhood. About a month ago one came through and crushed a tent I had set up outside the house. He also took a huge crap outside my roomates door. he was a scrawny little guy, maybe 150lb.

I would have been pissed at the kid more than anything. Tourists and people on vacation are notoriously stupid. A bear like this wouldn't have lasted long anyway.

I doubt that I'm the only one here that has done something stupid as a young kid ;)
I think a little anger and adrenalin played into this as well as a lucky shot with the log for the Marine.
What surprises me the most is , "The handgun was locked in the truck"
Has society gone that far down hill that a competetive pistol shooter AND Marine , has to lock down his weapon when he is with his familly camping in the woods

I hate to say it, but yes.

While camping I've gotten "that look" from people walking by when they see me using a tomahawk to split wood.

My guess is they buy the ready made packages of compressed-wood-fiber and pile some real wood around it before the douse it with gas and throw a match in.

Those tomahawks are just too frightening...a gun would get you a visit from the local SWAT team.
