Lone Star Hunter

I took a soldering iron to the grips and melted deep crevasses into them. The grip is 100% better.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger, got my LSH for $25 at Amazon. Very nice knife at a fantastic price. Heavy duty for sure. I also got myself a Mackinac Hunter (ordered from an online knife store). If you're thinking about getting either model, don't hesitate cause I'm pretty sure both are discontinued. I actually didn't mind the scales.....kinda of like them (in a cheesy sort of way, LOL!). Only thing I noticed is disengaging the lock is a pain in the butt with both knives. Did a search on this forum and someone suggested to keep the knife open ( in the half-open position ) for several days. Supposedly is loosens up the locking mechanism. Will try that and see if it works.

I put the scales back on and can honestly said I like it much better with them on. Aesthetically and functionally. Feels much better in hand and it makes the knife what its supposed to be, a wonderfully foreign built rendition of an American classic.

Yes, for some reason they seem to be a little harder to compress that many of my other C.S. folders, but then I see slight variations from super easy to semi tough. I have always considered tougher release to be a fair trade off (but they all generally ease up), for a rock solid lock up.

I see it as what the Buck 110 would be with a modern redesign.

Ordered a Mackinac nail nick yesterday to go with my LSH thumb stud. Really like these knives. Too bad that they are discontinued.

I might grab another Lone Star/Mack before they disappear. They are about as close as I get to a traditional folder, and built like battle tanks. As aesthetically attractive as many of the ''traditional'' slip joints etc. can be, most are pretty tiny and tend to be oriented toward light use. I am not hard on my folders, but I prefer more strength in the overall package, than less.

Looks like the $25 deal is gone. Ya'll snatched em up quick. Now sit back, relax and bask in the glory of getting a great deal on a great knife that's discontinued. Not sure if Cold Steel will bring this one back.

I got one before the "deal" was done, and I'm glad I did. The Mac Hunter now rides in a Cold Steel belt sheath because the Lone Star is more jeans pocket friendly (meaning easier to pocket clip because of the clip design, I suppose). This would be a keeper at three times the price.
