Lone Wolf Project: Post All Your "Experiments" Here

Hi. My Ladybug is actually an old Spyderco Ladybug, one of the small keyring-sized lockbacks. Mine has a red handle, so it helps me to orient the keys in my hand between house/car keys. Its blade is only 1 and 7/8" long.

Thank you for informing me.

Uh oh. My wife came up to me today and asked me if the SAK Super Tinker she bought me for our anniversary was coming in handy, and I told her I wasn't carrying it, that I was using the Peanut for the experiment, and she kind've had a sad, disappointed look on her face. She then asked why I didn't use the Super Tinker for the experiment instead, and then walked away. Damn, what do I do, what do I DO!?!?!?

Psst, hey guy, don't hurt the 'ol ladys feeling. Just a tip from loooong time experiance. Go ahead and swap the peanut for the tinker and tell her the peanut didn't work out. It's worth hedging things a bit for the lady. You have our permission!

You'll still have a two blade pocket knife, and if you choose to use some of the tools, okay, its still a one knife experiment. heck, our fathers had pocket screw drivers and P-38's. But right now I'd say make the gal feel good, that's more important in the long run. Especially right now. Go on, swap and finish with the sak and just keep a rough record of how often you really use the tools vs the blades. The wife may need a little more more emotional support these days. They put up with alot from us and for us, go on.

Hmmmm, actually I just might have to make the switch. Like you said, some things are more important in the long run, and if this is another lesson of the experiment (caring for the feelings of a loved one above your own needs), then the experiment continues to reveal things to me. Hmmm. I started this experiment on the 13th of January, and it is the 27th. Two weeks. I still have 50 more weeks to only carry the SAK, so I guess it's ok.

And by the way, thank you guys for all your encourging words and thoughts during this tough time for myself and my wife. I really appreciate it.

Ironically, my wife gave me a peanut for an anniversary gift and I've been thinking of putting it aside in favor of a SAK!

I'm not officially taking part in the Experiment, but I'm following it keenly and it has gotten me thinking a lot about what I really need and what is superfluous. For nearly two decades a Vic Huntsman was my only edc, and virtually my only knife period. Last night I dug it out of semi-retirement and cleaned it up, sharpened it, lubed the joints and reattached the scales that were coming off. Now it is as good as when I bought it at age twelve, 25 years ago - aside from the wear of normal use. I have decided to start carrying it again and to put aside the others for awhile (although the peanut is still going with dress pants).

LOL. Gifts from the o'l lady tend to become EDCs, Foilist. Happened with my Leatherman Wave, which I carried for years, and now again with my SAK Super Tinker. I guess it's the connection to your loved one that makes one so loyal to it, kind've like Jackknife's dad and the Peanut given to him by his mom.

I have been following this thread since it started, and have enjoyed it a lot. It got me to thinking about what i really needed for cutting tools, and stuff in general. About a week ago I decided to participate, at least for a little while. I decided on an Case CV Small Texas Jack, a pattern that for some reason I am not even very fond of. For my other needs I carry a no name brand 5" carbon steel boning knife, and a old Norlund hatchet, when I feel I may need them.

Since the beginning of this I have been spending several hours each day hiking, ice fishing, and snowshoeing. The combo has worked great, and the Texas jack has done all of my non kitchen knife tasks very well. Today I got a call from a friend with a road killed deer, who had no idea what to do with it. So I went over with my gear, plus a few extras for him. The Texas Jack dressed and skinned the deer easily but I did use the hatchet to take off its lower legs, head and ribs, and the boning knife to help with the intestines. The boning knife did the rest of the butchering with little effort. I have also used the boning knife exclusively for filleting bluegills and perch this week..... It is a very versatile tool. Joe

I've been using my Trapper exclusively for the past week or so now. I just used it to prep my dinner. That's one of the good things about the larger trapper, the longer blade can cut up food with a little more ease than the smaller folders.

Oh, and I found out another food that helps with obtaining a patina is onions. They work almost instantly.

This is a grand experiment and a great thread. I, like most others posting here, would probable be better if I simplified, both my EDC and my life. I'm not ready to take the one knife for a year plunge, but I am inspired. Thanks to all involved. I look forward to following this thread!

hey Elcuchillo, I would tell the wife that I said I was sticking with the peanut and that's that. BUT!!!! It is driving you nuts not having the "?" (whatever it is she gave you). this way you are a man of conviction whose word is stone ,but you embrace the gift from your wife and can't wait for the day when you can put it back in rotation.

no charge for the expert advice.

Ok, so after taking Jackknife's advice and switching my EDC choice from my Peanut to the SAK Super Tinker my wife gave me a while back, I now find myself with a whole new set of tools to use. I now have the equivalent of the Sears 4-way mini screwdriver set, a P-38 , AND a two blade pocket knife, as well as scissors. and a hook. So, how do I use them? Well, today I found a use for the hook on the back of my SAK. We went grocery shopping, and my wife was having trouble carrying one of the bags. It was a bit heavy for her and the plastic handles were all folded up and hurting her hand. So, out comes the SAK, hook gets opened, and the bag ties go in the hook. Now my wife had a very comfortable handle with which to carry these bags. I also used the can opener to open up a clam packaged gift for my daughter. Yesterday, something interesting happened. I came across a bolt I had to loosen at work. Well, darn it, as part of the experiment, I said I would not carry a multitool, and even though they said they are going to require us to carry them, they have not MADE the requirement yet, and I have yet to do so (I am waiting until they TELL me to carry one). I looked at the tool, and by it's size, I decided to try something. I pulled out the can opener on my SAK and used that, and I'll be damned if the bolt didn't fit right into the can opener. Sure it slipped a couple of times, but with enough leverage and angling, I got it loose. Even with some extra tools, I STILL tried to keep in the spirit of the experiment and use my noggin to figure things out.
Cool.

boy, I hate to admit it, but I have fallen off the wagon. I have only been carrying one knife at a time, but after I lost my peanut and then found it, I have been switching my edc every couple days.

Perhaps I will watch you guys to see how it's done and then give it a shot at another time.

I love this journey though and applaud all you who are making it!!!

Brett

Don't feel bad Brett, I saw the experiments and thought, that could be cool, hmmmmmm.
Then I got up in the morning and put 3 knives in my pockets like usual.
Props for doing it guys, but I don't know how a knifenut can get by. And I don't mean get the cutting done. I have a bunch of blades, and I likes to play/work/carry/fondle them all. More power to y'all.

Although I've always been more of a knife user then nut, I STILL had a hard time choosing what knife to use on a given day, and even today I miss looking at my collection (I have since put all my knives away. Out of sight out of mind), but it sure is easier knowing exactly what knife you will be using on any given day.

I can certainly see that. Maybe if I didn't get home each night and play with them all I might have survived....:o

Anyway, I love the whole thing and commend you all. I will be watching this for the year to see where it goes.

Best,
Brett

Jeez, with you guys dropping out I'm glad I boxed up mine and told my son not to let me have them back till next January 13th. I know I don't handle temptation well at times, so I feel better with a young Montgomery County police officer guarding them with orders to use his batton if I try to force my way past. :D

Withdrawl can be an ugly thing!

You know, the weird thing for me is, I don't really miss my other slipjoints all that much. Sure, I love them and I loved fondling them and carrying them, but I can handle it so far. The one I really miss though is the Opinel #8 that up until I started this experiment was riding in my lunchbox. That little thing was a slicing machine. Good thing that Case CV also takes a good edge, or I would've fallen off the wagon too.
