Lone Wolf Project: Post All Your "Experiments" Here

Still with my originial selection here, a Case Amber Bone CV medium stockman. After cutting plenty of apples at work for a midnight snack and some onions here at home the other day, it's developing quite a nice patina.

Ever since y'all started all this I have been carrying the usual, you know... 5 different knives in a day...

But, it got me to thinking about what kind of knife I would carry for a do-all, and after a lot of thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that I would probably have to go with a stockman, because I like having blades of different lengths. It was my favorite when i was a kid too, and while my dad carried a trapper, I was always drawn to the three bladed stockman. My granddad like them too.

So I decided to give it a go, and I didn't want to use a knife I had already been using, because I'd also like to start with a new one because it will be interesting for me to see how much wear and tear after a year. So I broke out an unused 1978 Case 63047 stockman that had been cooling in my box for a good while, and sharpened it up. I gave it a little of a vinegar patina (almost a necessity down here), oiled the joints, and it's now on the job. The 63047 is about the sleekest, sexiest stockman ever made - to me, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this one serves me.

I have to admit I slipped, and went back to carrying a Vic Soldier. I still enjoy using the trapper, especially in the kitchen, but the Soldier just carries so much better in my pocket.

Ahhh, someone else who has discovered his TRUE edc. The experiment is producing some interesting results, I dare say.

The soldier is a nice old scout type pattern. I guess a couple million scouts over a century can't be wrong. A 3 1/2 or 3 5/8 equal end pocket knife does carry well.

Funny, I thought I was going to settle down with a stockman, but now that I'm back with my /wenger SI, I feel better. Its like there was a vague unease about it but nothing I could put a finger on. Thinking back, I realize that I've had a scout type of pocket knife around pretty steady since the first one I got from dad in 1953. Even in the service were I was carrying a stockman, I guess there was an all steel U.S. Army issue scout/Demo knife around that I used alot. Then I played around with sodbusters for a while, some peanuts came and went, now I'm back with my old Wenger SI.

Buddhism says life is like a great wheel, and everything comes back to the begining eventually. I started out with a scout knife, a Marlin 39 .22 rifle, and now I'm back with my 1976 issue date Wenger and a Marlin 39 rifle. The wheel turned.

Although not a committed "Experimenter," I have been following this closely and it has been influencing what I've been doing and carrying. I am surprised that 95% of the time it's my peanut in my pocket while my "oh, I can't do without it" multitool is gathering dust on a shelf.

The other 5% of the time it's a Wenger SI, but that may just be because it's my latest acquisition from a swap.

The question/challenge is, will that wheel turn again before Feb. 2, 2009?

A quick update on my status (like Foilist, I'm a non-official experimenter): Since El Cuchillo started this, I've carried nothing but my Case peanut, with the exception of a three-day business trip to Romania in which I opted to carry my Vic Soldier. Funny, much like jackknife with his ingrained predisposition to a scout pattern, I've felt much the same to the two-blade jack pattern, or - in the case of the peanut, I guess - a scaled-down two-blade jack pattern. See, my grandad always carried a two-blade jack. Whether around the old house down in Miami, or at my mom and dad's place, or out in Okeechobee on one of our fishing trips, I'd always watch like a hawk whenever Grandad slipped his hand into his pocket and retrieved that knife to cut something. When I was older, I got one of my own, "just like his."*

* Actually, mine was a crappy shell-bolster Imperial serpentine jack. Not a great knife, but I sure wish I had it back.

You know, come to think of it, I had a SAK as a child. Don't really remember if it was an authentic SAK, or a knock off, but I had it, and it was really my first pocketknife. I used it for a lot of things, Funny that I never really thought of that. Things like this experiment really DO bring us back full circle to the beginning. Wow.

I was born with a Revolver and Case Peanut in my dresser draw crib in the mid 50's.

So I am sticking with the Peanut, as that is what I started out with if you will.

With respect, sm2, I haven't a clue what you are trying to say.

BTW, 1 week with the Harness Jack! WOOHOO! (I still miss my SAK, but I've not encountered a situation where I have NEEDED it.)

Tornado's were devastating.
Everyone has seen the news by now.

We lost a farm dawg , lots of damage, just not near as bad as other areas.

Peanut was with me, it performed tasked asked of it.

Traditional Folders and fixed blades were used, are being used.
Some that lost all , and friends of friends, are getting a package of donated knives.

It might be a good idea - somehow- to get up a donation to areas hit, and have members send knives.
If nothing more than a SAK Classic, or Pocket Pal, or Set of Old Hickory's ...

Traditional folks are neighborly, and just do the right things.

I'll let Staff, Mods and others mull this over, just, well we have members perhaps in areas that could be the contact persons and receive donations and pass them out where needed along with simple sharpening stones.

I'll be out of pocket dealing with matters.

Regards,

Steve

Sorry to hear it, Steve. Hang in there and check in when you can to let us know how things are going.

Hey, I'm down like a clown for the knife donation project. I am not any good at organizing this kind've thing, but if someone gets it started, I have a bunch of knives I put away for a year that I can give out to those in need. It may seem crazy that I am willing to give away my stash, but hey, it's for a good cause. Besides, my EDC does all I need it to. I don't NEED my other knives. Someone else, though, just might. Count me in on the knife drive.

I'm in if y'all have someone or somewhere we can share some knives. This project has shown me that I can use to downsize my knife collection, might as well help someone in the process.

I hope you guys don't think less of me, but I'm going to bow out. I want to work a couple of my other knives into the rotation. The sickness has taken it's toll on me. I made the mistake of a new purchase as well as digging through my knife box. I wish the rest of you hold outs the best and may the folksy be with you:D. I know its only been a month, but its been fun.
