Long lasting folder

Consistent with your requirements there is only one - Sebenza by Chris Reeves. Titanium slabs, open architecture, S30V steel, easy takedown for cleaning, lanyard, fort knox lock-up, and super customer service. Sebenza means work.

Another vote for the Manix or Mini-Manix - the Manix family of knives are built like tanks and will give you many years of service.

I've had a Buck 110 knock-off for over 25 Years...same one, much sharpened -a lot thinner- and it doesn't lock up as solid as it used to. That being said, the design is sound, and I'm sure a newer version, if well cared for should suit you fine.

I also have a Spyderco Military that I've carried as part of an EDC rotation for four years +/- it still locks up solid as a vault and holds a wicked sharp edge.

Those are my recomendations.

Not knowing what it will be used for, it's a bit difficult to ascertain your needs. If you want edge holding retention, that's one thing. If you want a knife that will be tough and nigh unto indestructable, that's another. For two to three hundred dollars, you can buy a number of very nice knives and rotate them. There are laminated steels that try to combine strength with edge retention, but some of them are gimmicks (read San Mai by Cold Steel). Some blades are well suited for outdoor use, others for general use.

Spyderco offers good blades with outstanding edge retention, but will the shape of the blade be suitable for your needs? Benchmade makes outstanding knives, too, but I sometimes wonder how heavy duty they are. Mine are all substantially lighter. For strength alone, Cold Steel's Voyagers (4-inch blade) are tough to beat. And the CRKT M16-14T blend a beautiful polished titanium frame with a rugged locking system and a tough tanto blade. (I picked up a version with AutoLAWKS lately and was very impressed with the quality.) The M16-14LE is very similar, except it has a black aluminum frame with a black tanto blade. The M21-14 offers a spear point and is exceptionally strong, and it's one of my favorite knives.

As seen from other posts, the Spyderco Native can be had for $40 from Wal*Mart, but you can buy the black model for a bit more, elsewhere. It's a great all-round pocket knife if you like the pointy sharp blades. Probably the toughest folder I've owned is a Cold Steel Pro-Lite, which is still available, but discontinued. It's got an exceptionally strong frame, locking system and a very tough 440A stainless blade. Although it doesn't score the best in edge retention, the black tanto blade was very well finished and tough enough for sustained outdoor or survival use. The CRKT Desert Cruiser also is exceptionally robust and has seen quite a bit of heavy combat use in Iraq, but it's frame size makes it a bit bulky. And sand-colored knives may not be your thing.

Good luck.

I agree with the others who recommend the legendary Buck 110.

And while the basic 110 is a fine knife and deserved its fantastic reputation, the Alaskan Guide Buck 110 from Cabela's is simply awesome!
And for less than $70.00 dollars, it's also one of the very best deals around.

BTW, it comes with a very nice leather sheath too.

Good luck,
Allen

I was looking through my modest collection of folders and came up with a few more options. I think the RAT model 1 folder, CRKT M1 lightfoot, Cold Steel Recon 1, Camilus Heat, and the Buck 110 or 112 would also serve you well.

I agree, allenC. For the little extra cost there is little reason not to upgrade to the AG 110. On the other hand, it's nice to get a custom 110 from Buck's shop. It can be had in a your choice of steels, handle materials, etc.

If a knife is going to last 20 years, what's $30 - $50 more...a couple dimes a month difference. Go for it if the 110 suits your taste and needs.

:)

An xm-18 is about the only knife i could possibly imagine would last 20 years of EVERYDAY,constant, hard use.I checked out my first sebenza on friday and after the guy saw my xm-18,he wanted to know where to buy one.You can't hardly find one in the $300-$400 range though unless it is well used.Good luck on your choice.

Thanks for mentioning the D'Allara. Somehow that model completely escaped my attention, but it looks like it would fit in nicely with the rest of my function-over-form "collection".

Did thedawg get kicked off the forums?? If so I kinda think thats lame. Just because someone doesn't like a particular knife manufacturer it seems like people kinda gang up on him and especially here it seems like you guys just had it out for him. I mean, he did bring up a very good point about linerlocks not being the best choice for lasting 20+ years.

Besides, someone like thedawg keeps things a bit interesting once in a while ya know what I mean? Different opinions and personalities should be encouraged in a forum, not banned.

Just my opinion...please don't kick me out. Haha! (just kidding)

Read all of his threads and you will see why he was banned. All he wanted to do was bash Spyderco and troll the forums. He added nothing to this site and was constantly instigating fights. As worthless of a member as they come. Thank God the mods banned him.

yeah, basically the majority of his posts were talking about spyderco in a negative way. Most of his complaints weren't even substantive, he just didn't like them and didn't say why.

It was not the opinions. It was the insulting way they were expressed.

Opinions are welcome. Belittling and insulting are not. Read the FAQs.
