Long term grid down scenario, which folder do you choose?

True, in some situations. But in others the taking each factor out of context and trying to combine them in the end turns into a jumbled, incoherent mess.

Isolating a folder like was done here is like asking what the best tire is without knowing what kind of vehicle it is going on.

It didn't help that the premise of the whole thread was convoluted and arcane at best. I'm not sure how we are "unprofessional" for finding it so. (One would think an professional author would want to be straightforward and clear in their language. :))

Anyway, seems to me the whole thread would have went perfectly smoothly if we were all just asked for our favorite rugged, low-maintenance folder. But, I'm an editor, not an author. :)

And I'm still sticking with the Leatherman even if it was never verified that it fit the author's premise.

(And I'd still like to know why the heck I'm going down in the sewers.)

All of this. Also, ummm...water and methane supplies? I guess?

That's a beautiful paragraph my friend...honestly, very profound.

Thanks, brother.

My answer would be the stongest folder I own. Honestly, I don't own the folder knife I would want. Probably it would be a ZT of some sort or perhaps one of Bob Doziers custom folders. I want a simple mechanism that as a result, would probably not choose an assisted opener first.

From what I own, I would probably choose a Spyderco Endura even though I prefer the Delica overall simply because it has a longer blade and is stainless steel (VG-10). If I were caught out in the scenario as it happened and away from my home base, I would probably have either a large Victorinox SAK or GEC #42 with me. I keep a SOG Vulcan (or mini-vulcan) in my work bag which in my opinion would not be a shabby choice.

Now that this thread is getting goofy, Mad Max got by with a SOG Dessert Dagger.

I would probably carry my strider sng.

Ak-47, with a bayonet. Now THAT'S a folder!

I don't believe fixed blades or guns were included in the original premise of this thread. I thought anyone who had difficulty following the premise of the thread was a "hater," and invited not to participate.

Maybe if you don't like the thread, don't participate. That's too easy though, like Mr. Spark says, "haters gonna hate", it is inevitable.

Having given this a bit more thought, I would like to clarify what I was trying to say earlier. To the op, I can understand it might have been a bit frustrating not getting the exact answers you were looking for, however...

It seems that you came to a knife forum to try to lend a greater sense of accuracy and realism to your writing. To this end, you presented a scenario (specific to knives) to a bunch of knife aficionados. By your own admission, about half of them rolled their eyes and called BS. Now sure, there are a few jerks on here (I might even be one of them despite my best efforts not to be :p) but that doesn't mean that everyone who views your ideas with a critical eye is a jerk. I mean, that was the whole idea of posing the question here wasn't it? To see how your ideas withstand a more intense examination from a more knowledgable reader base on a specific subject? The eye rolling (though it might kind of piss you off) might be some of the most useful information you got here.

Anyway, you said you were done with this thread so I'm probably just talking to the wind, but I felt the need to try to express this. I felt that it was a little bit unfair to criticize the folks on the forum for providing you with some honest opinions and feedback just because it might not have been the specific answers you were looking for. Nothing personal though. Thanks for your service and I'll give your work a look.

Peace,

Lance

If I could carry any folder, not just ones I own, then it would be the Cold Steel Espada XL. That way I can hunt rhinoceroses.

I'm still with the eye-rolling post-apocalyptic porn crowd, but mostly because that's not my prefered form of porn. I'm trying to develop a bit more tolerance and sensitivity here.

Maybe if we tilt our heads and squint a bit, we can reframe the OP into a question that might be a bit more helpful to an author of this kind of fiction.

What sort of cool things can you do with a big, heavy folding knife that might have a survival application in a long-term post-apocalyptic world?
-- Can you pry open a door? Wood? Steel? If yes, how exactly might you go about it? Points to those who have actually done it.
-- Can you cut through a powerline? (Post-apocalyptic, hello? Not a hot wire.) Would you baton through it? Has anyone actually done that?
-- Can you cut through PVC pipe? Copper pipe? Aluminum conduit? Anyone done that? What happened?
-- Can you sharpen S30V on a piece of smooth concrete or other kind of "found" hone? Has anyone done that? How good was the edge?
-- Has anyone lubricated their knives for any extended period of time with just a drop or two of engine oil off a dipstick? How did that work out?
-- Has anyone completely disassembled their Strider or Hinderer without the proper tool? Oh, everyone has. OK, how did that work out? Were you able to get it all back together with the tension set properly?

So, I guess I'm hating constructively. :)

If I had to be relegated to a folder in the Apocalypse I would throw it through the display case window to gain access to any fixed blade I could :)

Ok staying with the OP's parameters, I like the Cold Steel Spartan. It is my go to camp knife at the moment. Taken small trees, carved, batoned cooked etc.

Now that this thread is getting goofy, Mad Max got by with a SOG Dessert Dagger.
Not a Desert Dagger, it was a Gerber Mark2.

In regards to this thread, I wouldn't do anything with a folding knife in a post-apocalyptic world that I wouldn't do with one today. I use my folders to cut rope, leather, rubber, plastic, and perform various food related activities. Even if I knew that an apocalyptic event were imminent, I wouldn't go out and buy any more knives, much less some tank of a folder. I already have enough knives to last well beyond the rest of my life.

Now as far as the OP's hypothetical, in my opinion, asking which folder one would choose to pry up a manhole cover is no different than asking what pistol one would choose to hammer nails. Sorry, but I can't accept the question as a serious, reality-based question.

The OP offered a premise that utterly defies reality, so it shouldn't surprise anyone if some people here find it impossible to offer serious, reality based responses to his premise. If you want serious, reality based answers, you should ask serious, reality based questions. If the OP had offered his hypothetical as a fantasy, just for fun, that's fine, but apparently he was serious. I for one do not have the ability to suspend rational thinking, or intelligent thought, when asked a "serious" question regarding survival or emergency preparedness.

oddly enough, I would have to go with my CRKT Hissatsu folder. I've had mine for probably two years now and it has become my favorite knife; It's sharp, has a rather thick balde, has that auto lock function which i love, AUS-8 steel which easy to sharpen, and a overly large handles. Now i've tried to pry open my car door, that had ice in the hinges and I had little success with my 0350.

I would take a custom Mayo or a one of those all blacked out CQC-6's.Neither may be the perfect knife for the apocalypse but I have always wanted one, and dang it if it takes the end of modern civilization ,then so be it! :D

Killgar good catch I remembered the serrations only. It's a night scene IIRC.

Eotw.

What's in my pocket just about everyday.
Swiss Army Knife.

Sebenzas. Striders. ZTs. Emersons.

Just can't hold a candle to a SAK
for all around usefulness..

It's the Sonic Screwdriver of th knife world.
