Long time coming...A wootz kukri.

After some 13 years, ones rolled into to my small but interesting collection of kukri. So chuffed I felt compelled to share.

16 inch blade, T spine Crystaline wootz over entire surface on both sides. 5 inch hilt.

Very lethal. would slash to the bone but built for stabbing...... very fast & dextrous as well.

Remnants of koftgari left on hilt.

I am guessing very early 19th century, I would assume a wealthy Sikh warriors. quite possible from Lahore area? Could even be a bring back from the Anglo Sikh wars.

But all thoughts & comments welcome...

Way over my head but that's a beauty to look at. Very special. Love the pattern in the blade as well as the overall shape.

Glad your long wait is over.

Spiral?

Magnificent.

One of those "I wish it could talk" blades.

Congratulations.

Wooah! Ive read about these in some personal collections and museums only. I agree JW it looks a bit Khyber. Congrats on your find Spiral and thanks for sharing the history!

Thanks Bawanna!

It sure is Kismet!

Howard,It was in Inveterates collection in Australia for the last 10 years. Before that I think it was in Israel for a while.

JWB I think what was then Punjab & into Rajasthan more likely than Afghan proper... T spines, wootz & kofgari all quite usual there. It has rather Sikh or Hindu tendencies not muslim. But yep there are Afghan & muslim kuks out there as well!

Thanks Ndoghouse! I am chuffed with it.

I think we need even more pictures from more angles. Don't see one of these every day ya know. I keep popping back for another look from time to time.

I had two wootz tulwar for a while-wish I'd kept one or the other. The lightness does suggest Sikh influence-the way they use a khukuri only sorta works with the heavy ones.
That really is a beaut.

The only wootz blade I have ever owned I found myself just looking at all the time and just getting lost into the patterns. Bulat while it supposedly has the same properties doesn't seem to have the same mesmerizing effect. Or maybe it was just the particular pieces I owned. Either way, that is one gorgeous addition to any collection. Congrats on adding such a significant piece Spiraltwista. Not sure about the rest of your collection, but I have to imagine this would be a central piece in it.

Cheers Bargs, Kamagong! It is a lovly blade.

Your right JW the Sikhs do often like fast & Nimble!

Shavru, its an important piece to me but now my collection is down to 30 or so pieces..:grumpy:

So there quite a few of critical importance to me. It gets hard to choose.

Its its Indian crystalline wootz not high contrast like the Persian stuff I still find myself reflecting it in the light.

Bawanna Heres some pics of the little gold Koftgai that's left, took ages to catch it, Im givng it an oil bath now, as it hasn't been cleaned for a while. then I will try to bring out the etch a little more if I can. {I am used to pattern welded blades but only had a couple of wootz daggers before.}

That's way cool.
I never had anything wootz before but have a few damascus. I love it myself. Can't say why neither. I guess it just appeals to me like most everything I see on this forum.
Wish my piggy bank could keep up with my burning desires.
