Long Walk to a Short Fire

Wow, great pics! Good find on the antler, too. You could use that for everything from flintknapping to making a new knife handle. Those onions look mighty tasty too.

Great pics buddy!! That video clip was cool... full 360, well narated, didn't make me dizzy... I watched it 5 times in a row!!

We gotta get you going on traditional flint and steel. I was just discussing it with KGD... Looking for tinder is challenging, but rewarding.

Rick

I know, I know...I'm working my way there...I'm just going a bit slow I guess. I'm glad you like the pics and the vid. I did a couple of vids on the trip out through the mud puddles and stuff but the road is tight and curvy and I was affraid they would make somebody dizzy so I didn't upload them

If you look at the last several hikes there is a theme in the trees that really catch my attention. I'm always seeking out the Cherry and Birch trees in any area. The trick is going to be to learn flint and steel techniques in a high humidity environment...preferably without limiting myself to char cloth.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery....after the recent news and the subsequent study of the urban environment with me spending waaaaaay too much time in the inner city...along with just every day stress... it was a much needed break.

I appreciated the video as well. Great green scenery. Have spent too much time studying (and avoiding studying!) over the past couple weeks. Hopefully after finals are over this week I will slip out to the Sandhills for a few days for some fishing and avoiding people!

I hope you get to get out for a while, it sure did me some good. Hope you post some pics.

I understand the studying, my wife just finished up her finals and is out till fall now. She really worked and studied her @$$ off but it paid off as she made the "Dean's List" this semester so I took her out the other night to celebrate...the real celebration is this coming weekend :D

Wow, so green and purrty. The video was perfect as well, I liked the 360 without making me dizzy. Thanks for sharing, looks like you had a blast. Some of the best times can come along in the woods. Of course, I mean alone with a knife.

Oddly enough, I think you also found what I need.

It's time I went "west a-ways," if only for a few hours.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

Just curious, what part of the country is that? It damn sure isn't South Texas! ;)

Oh... I suppose you know, but in a lot of places it is spring turkey season.... although that one is a hen. Still you must be a fairly stealthy guy to get that pic (or have a hell of a zoom). ;)

Or Central Texas...in the 90's all friggin week so far. Great pics mistwalker...

Nope...not central Texas either, but I lived in Dallas and Irving some when I was a kid and in my early teens...back and forth between mom in Texas and dad in Tampa Florida....then, after a wander around the south for about a year, on the streets of Dallas for about a year and a half till I turned 18 after mom was killed and dad married a woman I just couldn't suffer. What part of central Texas are you in?

Tried a trip this morning, but it turns out I'm still too weak.:(

OK. I'll try again next Saturday.:)

Ok...I think I missed or have forgotten something...things have been a bit hectic lately...what's up, are you ill?

Just finished beating that old devil, the influenza.

That's why I was looking at the pictures of your recent outing with such interest.:)

I'm OK now ... just not (apparently) in decent hiking shape yet.:D

Ah..glad you're better, you'll be out there in no time.

Well…today I just took a break from everything and went for a walk in the woods.

What an awesome post. A wonderful juxtaposition of words & images to paint what may very well be the most peaceful and serene post I have ever seen on any forum. Took me a minute to figure out where you are at. One of these years I am getting on the bike and riding down your way, as I have always wanted to catch Autumn in your part of the country.
You also reminded me how very blessed I am. As we have very much the same thing right out in our back yard along with mountains and the Puget Sound. We share the misty mornings, with the fog and rain. Of course we have cedars & evergreens and are more likely to see grouse, quail, deer, bear and a rare cougar (twice in the last 7 years), but the morning spring walks are very much the same as yours. Funny how when you live in so much beauty it takes a post like yours to remind me not take it for granted. Thanks

Thanks! Sounds like you enjoyed it nearly as much as I did. We have some grouse around here but they are getting scarce, no cougar, and no bear...though they did try bringing them in for a while but they would disappear shortly after being brought in.

I know what you mean, I grew up here but posting my hikes on forums I have gotten enough feedback to learn again just how lucky I am...and quit taking it for granted. I have made a lot of friends in the UK who are jealous of "my" woods.
