Longest battery life - Waterproof LED

You can also try a L1 Lumamax with Cree form Surefire. It's a great light with dual output - low - 10 lumens (more than enough for walking at night in darkness) and high - 65 lumens - here come the brightness...:D, And ll this on a single 123CR baterry:D
It's very similar to the surefire EL2 outdorsmann - a bit shorter which is a plus in my opinion.

I love the Inova X1, but there have been three versions. The second was pretty good, got 8-10hr from a single AA - at least twice that on a Lithium AA, which is lighter than an alkaline - and generally 2/$5 - worth it for emergency. It's LED is larger, rounded, and in a shallow reflector. The latest will kill an AA Alkaline in <2 hr - but is brighter. It's LED is smaller and at the bottom of a longer and more funnel shaped reflector. I got over 5hr on the Li AA - it measured 1.38V (Li AA's & AAA's start at 1.75V.) - after a while (~2 hr), it was up to 1.61V, and useful for >another hr.

A great deal in a bright 2xAAA flashlight is the Nuwai/River Rock (Target brand) TM-311X (PRC-made). This little guy is bright - and a great path illuminator. The Li AAA's really help, although a four pack there was $9.99 - same as the light! It is constructed of black anodized (?) Al with an O-ring sealing the battery cap/switch, just like the US-made X1s, so it is definitely water resistant. Spend $30 - buy two and a 4-pack of Eveready Lithium AAA's - wear out the original AAA's included in the blister pack. This light fit the knivesshipfree.com pocket holster's firesteel loop after a lot of stretching (.375" to .637" - the Peak Solutions Matterhorn is an easier fit.). The River Rock light comes with a pocket clip - removed for this application.

My Petzl headlamps are generally in the 80-150 hour range for battery life; that's on 3 AAAs. Best of all you don't need your hands to use one.

Another one I really like is this one http://www.9voltlight.com. On low mode, certain models get upwards of 600 hours... I have the high intensity version which is still around 70 hours or so...with a lithium 9volt you get 1200 hours on low..

+1 for the Inova x5 for outdoor apps. It uses lithium cr123 batteries and it last a long time. I have yet to change out the batts in this one. For smaller and lower illumination needs I use a small keychain Inova or mini-mini maglight.
