Look what I got today

My new knife arrived today, and on time. I walked out to the mailbox as the USPS vehicle pulled away. The attached pics are of exactly what I received. The shipping box looked like the Samsonite Gorilla had gotten hold of it, only that the box didn't fare as well as the luggage did in that old, iconic TV commercial. To add insult to injury, the ape must have peed on it; the box's exterior was damp and stained, and some insufficient amount of paper wrap, intended as a cushioning agent inside the box, was damp also. The knife's box suffered just a little cosmetic damage; the knife and sheath were OK, fortunately. Also, except for two useless pieces of tape on the shipping label (at least they made some effort to ensure that I would receive the shipping box; not so much the knife itself), there was not a single bit of shipping tape applied to secure the box's closing flaps or seams. I guess that the vendor didn't have enough markup in the item's price to cover the overhead cost to properly package it for shipping. Rant over.20181123_134842.jpg20181123_134941.jpg 20181123_135306.jpg20181123_135440.jpg 20181123_135551.jpg

I didn't photograph the knife (Smokejumper), since it was in excellent shape. The issue was with the poorly executed packaging.

Good thing it was a Smoke jumper and not and not a classic 110, The Ape pee would have surely tarnished the bolsters.;)

that's about every package I get here. actually yours is a little better than many of them I get. my mail service folks are some of the worst in the area....not exaggerating. I was told it was where the post office stuck the worst of the worst that couldn't be fired. sorry ya got a bad package delivery. least it ain't the bulk of them like me.

I just got a priority mail box like that- different vendor, but it had a fist size hole punched in the size of it, luckily everything was slightly bigger than that or I would have had magazine pouches at some post office lost and found.

this event is not good and I feel for the op as it is crappy this happened, but skblades is a really good vendor. im sure he cares this happened. hes always been real good to me for a one man/small operation. if ya reach out to him I'm sure he'll do what he can......to make it right.

There's really no need "to make it right". I'm completely satisfied with the knife. It's the unsatisfactory packaging on the seller's part that needs addressing. The lack of more secure packaging helped in enabling the mail handlers to mangle the shipping box, thus exposing the knife to possible damage. Obviously, the vendors can't control how the delivery service treats their shipped items, but they can take inexpensive preventative measures (in this case, shipping tape) to protect their products once mailed.
That said, thank you SKblades for selling me an excellent example of this knife!

On that type of box there is only one main flap, the two on the side just tie it into the strongest sides of the box. I usually tape every seam. I also ziplock everything inside. But supposing the box is handled better than that it could likely make it with no additional tape.

It looks like it fell in the rain/snow somewhere and maybe stepped on. Guess they were trying to hurry.

About a month ago, I ordered from them. The ends did have tape on the seams.
Maybe it was the holiday rush to get orders out. They need to be informed of the poor packing for future orders.

@skblades is a member here at BF, have you contacted them about your packaging issue. I would like to hear a response from them if they choose to do so.

I install product from a manufacturer. We have a symbiotic relationship, in that we both benefit from the relationship. I report things that go wrong to them. Whether it was product assembly or poor shipping/packaging. The Operations manager is grateful, for I am an extra pair of eyes to see what they send out. They could have done better yes, and to let it be known to them know is a courtesy, not a hindrance to the health of that company.

I contacted SKBlades this morning and made them aware of my post here. I also apologized to them (and removed the post's "Bad" prefix). In the heat of the moment, and with my initial disappointment with the shipment's condition, I overreacted. I placed an inordinate amount of blame with SKBlades; they inflicted no damage. The USPS mail handler/s did.
Thank you to the prevailing calmer heads in this thread, for their insight.

respectfully,

As you said it really was the PO that did the damage. The packaging met their minimum requirements, though as many know you have to do more than the minimum. In the end if it had gone really bad someone(PO or seller) other than the OP would be responsible for making it right.
I have seen worse-received a fixed baled loose in a padded envelope

Me too. I once took delivery of a $400+ custom flashlight which arrived at my mailbox in a severely torn padded envelope. I was happily shocked to find the light still there, as the torn opening was much larger than the light. How it stayed in there is a wonder.
I believe that I might be accurately described as being "obsessive compulsive" when it comes to the selling and packaging of my own items for shipping to a buyer.

I've shipped my fair share of flat rate boxes. I've had the same problem with smashed boxes and now I put a wrap all the way around the box.

Glad to see you still got the knife.

I would think bubble wrap inside the box to have outward pressure to prevent crush via air cushion is the ticket. Leave the outside box as designed.
