Looking for a 9-10" chopper

I own a lot of choppers but really think it's hard to beat the BK-9.

BK9, RTAK II (new one in 5160) another cheap chopper that will perform well condor kumanga all three are 3/16 thick 9"+.

The Junglas is great, but I'd also look at Breeden. A custom knife for a great price, and from what I've seen, they come extremely sharp.

I agree with both of your choices.

What Breeden do you have? Would love to see a pic of it.

I love my Kumunga. Great for the (rare) times when something prevents me from packing a full-blown machete.

Becker BK-9,
Scrapyard SYKCO 911,
ESEE Junglas,
Buck Hoodlum Blade
TOPS Condor Alert
Cold Steel 12" Barong
Ka-Bar cutlass

If you're a Bark River guy, check out their new Grasso Bolo II. Nine-inch blade and it is supposedly one heck of a chopper. The price for one with a no-frills handle should be in your range.

Eginder, thats a good looking blade. I was actually thinking about the Golok but I have never been the best at sharpening a convexed edge. Any experiance with the Golok at all?

Eh--don't worry too much about keeping the convex "perfect." Just sharpen it like a conventional edge.

I tend to go to Bruce Culberson for much of my chopping needs. Built pretty much to order. I have an hudson bay style 8" chopper almost on the way. I do think that 1/4 is a bit excessive, and lean towards 5/32. 3/16 would be a good middle ground. I own a BRKT golok and have nothing but good to way about it. Very well balance knife.

X2. The only think it's missing is a pull-start.

Don't get an RTAK II - terrible chopping power for the size\weight IMO. I lost mine and really it didn't even bother me. My chopweiller is a much better chopper in a smaller lighter package. My go-to favorite chopper right now is my dogfather LE, I love it. Problem is finding one in the exchange for the price your looking to pay. My suggestion would be to pick up something from the SPEC line just to scratch the itch, there's always going to be more blades down the road.

I have a fiskars, I just want a large knife. It will also be easier for my wife to make kindling with, she almost cut her leg off last time she used my ax.

Fiskars / Gerber are terrible axes though in my opinion. Chopping pleasure will greatly improve with a good quality axe / hatchet with wooden handle. Wetterlings, Gränsfors Bruks or similar. I have personally found large knives to be more dangerous to handle than axes.

My favorite large chopper is the Ka Bar JAB potbelly, 1/4" thick and hollow ground makes it super efficient. Although not 9" it chops better than many.
