My better half's dad is turning 50 soon and, although he is an avid fisherman, he doesn't have is a high quality fishing/fillet knife. I'm looking for something of higher steel quality and better looking than the basic Gerber or Kershaw fillet knives. Any suggestions?

Bark River Knife and Tool Canadian Sportsman or there Canadian Sportsman II

helle makes some really nice one with cork handle so they float.

Yeah. If it is a gift and you want it to mean something, and for him to actually use it, I'd go with the Barkie.

This thread just screwed me up. I love my Knives of Alaska filet knives but that Barkie is gorgeous!

Scrapyard Knives "Bird Dog" and it should be going up for sale at the scrapyard web-site forum soon.

after the busse heat treat this is the sharpest and best edge holding 154cm i have ever, ever seen, incredible and i EDC a 154cm blade from a reputable and famous maker and it doesnt even come close.

also the torture tests dan busse did on these is almost mind boggling for a thin stainless like this and the "mudder" res-c handles are in a league of their own.

did i mention the knife is damn good looking too

I have done a lot of fishing guide work and filleted a lot of fish. The Rapala knives are about as good as it gets. I have used almost every brand out there and none have worked any better. Now a Days I use a Rapala electric for most filleting work.

NIce blade but not really a Fillet knife. It is more a Bird&Trout knife. It is not flexable to correctly fillet fish. Fine in a pinch but not a fillet knife and it is only 4.50" long.

I use a rapalla fillet knife, and it works fine, coincidently I got it as a gift.

See, I don't understand why so many people like the rapala knife. I have one, and it was dull when I got it, and is so hard to sharpen, I never did get it to a point were I would actually use it. It turns out, I use my Mora 510 to fillet my trout now a days.

For a special knife go into the knife makers section and ask someone to make a knife.
