Looking for a camp/survival knife

Take a hard look at the NMSFNO...still available on the Busse Combat website!

If you want a bigger blade an outlaw would be a great choice but Swamprat's offering an M9 LE you could check out too.

I really like the skinny ASH and the HOG ASH, but I've been carrying my SARsquatch alot lately. It is another great all round knife.

All of the models suggested here in the other posts are excellent choices, but since you gave a range of 5"-7" for size, I'll toss another good choice at ya if you want to consider a knife on the short end of your range...

The BATAC (Badger Attack, TAC handle) is an outstanding knife in a smaller package. It has a sabre grind, a stout tip, and has a nice slim profile that's easy to carry on your hip. The CG model is coated, 3/16" thick and comes with either standard or "Magnum" handles, and that thickness will do for almost anything you throw at it. I wouldn't call it a chopper, but it'll take batonning (sp?) without breaking a sweat. They are only available on the secondary market now, but are still very reasonably priced. If you are worried about the thickness, the BATAC LE (Limited Edition) has a full height grind, satin finish, is a quarter inch thick, and comes with the thicker ("Magnum") handles only. Both versions have 5.5" blades (from tip to ricasso) and 5 inches of cutting edge. I would call it more a hiker/survival knife over a camp knife, but it is worthy of consideration alongside its larger cousins.

Quite honestly, the BATAC CG is one of my favorite Busse mid-size users.:

The BATAC CG comes in many different color combinations... Here's a few (the bottom horizontal one is a BATAC Special Edition 2007, .25" thick):

Good Hunting!

Take a look at the Ratweiller, SOD, and Camp Tramps too - These are Good values in what you are looking for

The skinny ASH is very worthy. It is a great handling knife

THose are only my Jacks:eek::p

Even with the advances in modern medicine they havent figured out the mysterious effects of INFI:D;)

Thanks for all of the input guys... It has helped alot. I'm still looking around but right now it might still be the skinny ash. I did look at some scrap yard knives...If I am correct...the company is owned by Jerry's brother? I noticed they are quite cheaper...but they look solid. Anyone have experience with their knives? How does the SR-77 and their handles hold up over abuse? CHEERS!

sr77 is fine for what your talking about. it will dent out a bit easier then infi, but it will dent rather then chip.

if your going to be bashing the handle (ricasso area) with batons, especially sharp/bark covered batons, the resiprene c will split. it'll take a good bit of abuse before doing it, but it will give. with the micarta, your more likely to distort the tube fasteners before you crack the scales themselves. when that happens, you can either get a stand off/bolt set up and re-fasten them yourself, or send it into the shop. the resiprene c will give you more shock absorption and a warmer grip, but for your purposes I'd go with micarta.

an example of a micarta refastening using the standoff+bolts on a sar5, from bagnet

I think you'll get a similar (noticeable) performance out of something like the ratmandu from swamp rat.

is money a consideration?

if it was me and money was no object, I'd probably extend the reach a bit and try for a nmsfno, and then back it up on a dual sheath with a cultellus. it will be noticeably heavier then just a skinny ash, but you'll be able to do so much more with the combo :D

and then theres always the sarsquatch :)

You can pick up a user SARSquatch for $300 or less (cheap for INFI), great all purpose knife at 7 or 8 inches.

I have only used the DFLE but it is excellent...a SOD should also be good...it is in the top end of size you mentioned. The DFLE is bigger...a 10 inch blade. You cannot really expect to baton with the handle though...if you want a pommel...you need a none Res C handle. A Sarsquatch is probably a good bet for what you want though....check out the Exchange...

HELLO! I am new to busse knives sooooo....looking for some advice. Looking for a good camp/hiking/survival knife. Thinking that the blade needs to be
5-7" range. It will be used hard(I've heard busse can take almost anything):). I was looking at some skinny ashes, but i dunno if the blade 3/16 is thick enough.....any advice would be nice...THANKS!

move along - there is nothing to see here !!

seriously mate, avoid this forum. You might end up buying INFI in the tonne like some of the folk on here !!

HA...I don't think I could get addicted to buying busse knives even if I wanted too(At least right now in my life):grumpy: Being a college student I do have a strict limit on what I buy...unless I take out more student loans:foot:.......:) But i am getting a job soon, and I know buying a solid knife is a life long investment at long as i take care of it. I am into the outdoors so I know I will put it to use and get my money out of it. I would buy a busse right now....(I may get some shit for this in this forum)... but I just recently picked up an umnumzaan from CRK so my funds are low. I know everyone here is into the fixed blades only but I do love my umnumzaan for EDC. Again THANKS for all of the input!

not at all, there are lots of folder fans here. it's just that the only busse family folder ever produced was the rat trap, and it was only produced for a short while.
