Looking for a camping/survival or all-around knife

I would take the BK7 over the CS any day. from your options, the BK7 is the best choice. I absolutely love mine. One of the most comfortable handles I've ever held (and KA BAR just released micarta handles for them). It was certainly designed for hard use outdoor/survival purposes. Check out this review here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=642371 I think I ordered my BK7 the day after I saw it.

Now, as awesome as the BK7 is, if you save some more $ you should get a Rat Cutlery RC4 or 6. But you wont be sorry you got a BK7.

So many choices and so little money. Well, I think Im going to start a new thread. New question/situation. Hopefully it will help me skip buying knives I dont need. Just the essentials. Like a 2-knives-do-all type thing or something.

Last question: What do you guys think of Frost Mora knives, and the Cold Steel Master Hunter or Pendleton?

Frost Mora are decent for general work, fishing and basic camp work. I have one in the glove pocket in each of my cars. They are mediocre in anything chopping etc. Frost did a thicker bladed version of the Mora that was the 115 and that is far better.

I have many knives that have been relegated to the desk drawer as their form does not work with what I do. Most of these knives by mentioned previously will exceed the work value of the Frost for all round camp duty but I tend to carry a chopper blade, a SAK a the Frost 115 to avoid the "jack of all trades, master of none" syndrome we inflict on our selves.

1. Cold Steel SRK - Carbon V ($70)
2. KaBar Becker BK11 ($40) and an axe (make/model?)
3. Kabar Becker BK7 or BK9 ($80)

Which option should I go with?

Of those choices, the BK7 is the best all-purpose.
If you want the knife to do some chopping as well, then the BK9 would be the best.

Yeah, I realize that 1 knife is not enough, and more is needed..

The Frost Mora sounds like a good bang for the buck. So you suggest the 45$ Frost Morakniv Outdoor 2000?

The $14-20 Frost Moras are good, correct? I notice that theres a 780 black triflex, 860 blue/black clipper, 760 blue SS, and the 740 red carbon. Is one model better than another one? Or do I just pick a color I like?

I think 1-2 Frost Moras and a Kabar Becker BK7/9 will do.

Well, since the Kabar Becker is going to be the only heavy duty knife I will have (at the time), should I go for the BK9 with its 2" longer blade, or is the BK7 sufficient for most tasks?

All depends on how much chopping you're going to do.

If you're not going to do a lot of chopping, the BK will probably be plenty.

The Moras are excellent knives for the money. IMHO, there isn't a better knife value for the money than Moras. I like the high carbon steel models. I have seven or eight of them, and always force a patina on them when I get a new one. I think for the money there are better knives that the CS hunter models.

Looks like you are on the right track. I will be interested how your trip goes and what your thoughts are of the knife(ves) you had along for the ride!

The carbon Moras are a little stronger than the SS models but are subjected to rusting. But just as long as I take care of it I should be fine. Plus, its only $20 so I wont cry if it does mess up. Haha.

Im pretty new to this knife stuff, but can you please tell me more about forced patina?

And can someone recommend me a sharpening stone/tool?

The Rangers are not bad and a used one will probably be in my price range.

Its been a while since I've gone camping. Last time I went we used knives for cooking, picking at stuff, and chopping up a fallen tree for the fire.

So I think a Frost Mora (which model?) and a BK7 should do.

Im not sure when the trip is, soon i hope. All these fires and marijuana growers makes the forrest a not so nice place. But once everything calms down, and a date is set, Ill make sure to post pictures of the trip/knife/etc.

yeah,
bk7 or 9 will do the job easily!
get one of those and you won't need anything else (but you will want more blades... hurry, get those and never come back to the forums again... your wallet will thank you. lol. ahahaha)

Lost of great suggestions posted.
I have carried KOA Camp Knife and little knife combo, and a Kershaw folder; all have their uses.

The most popular guy at my hunt camp is the guy that remembers to bring the Swiss Army knife with the corkscrew.

The Buck ii9 does a good job for a larger knife. I used for for years and nevev did see a ned for anything larger.

I like the CS Master Hunter w/carbon v, and my CS SRK w/carbon v is a tough knife. Becker Companion is one knife that you would never break but is HEAVY.

Buy the rc 4, its a great knife. If you have any questions, drop by the rat forum.

If you can find the cash, the bravo 1 is also a class act. (although I hate the kydex sheath that is standard, but the leather is  )

Seems if you have no intended uses for a much larger blade and no desire to lug a big FB around a Mora might be right up your alley, and it way cheaper to replace from learning sharpening and carry.

Leatherman, Mora and a folding saw would keep your pack real light and still be able to saw up some kindling too.

I have so many Mora knives you can't go wrong with Mora but the Mora 2000 is exceptional and gets extremely sharp.

The Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter is another great knife that gets so sharp!

The Cold Steel 12 inch machetes are a cheap large tough as any camp knife, I like the Barong version ; )

If you get a Mora, 12 inch CS Barong machete and CS Trail Hawk tomahawk you'll be set for most any cutting, batoning, chopping task around the camp site.

If you want a really inexpensive "durable" tough as any camp knife look at the Cheaper Than Dirt Rough Use Knife (its good enough and will not fail) But the Cold Steel 12 inch Barong machete will out chop and baton any of the other 7 - 9 inch large camp knives and it will "not" fail you. I have the others and they are no better, save your money unless you are willing to take a giant step and get a Busse but again it ain't necessary for camping.
