Looking for a camping/survival or all-around knife

65 bucks would get you a becker BK7 and a bk13, which is a smaller 440A stainless blade you can use for finer tasks. That leaves you with another 15 for a fiskars folding sawhand axe or sawback Ontario camp machete (full sized saw and machete in one, can't go wrong there!)

CS Bushman is tough and well-balanced. Wrap the handle in paracord or tape for grip. A couple bucks more than a Mora.

I heard nothing but good things about the Cold Steel Carbon V knives and Im really attracted to the SRK, but for camping, a BK7 seems more fit for the job. Cheapest I found the Kabar Becker BK7 is about $70 shipped.

And I was semi interested in the CS Pendleton Hunters because the specs seems ok and looks like a poor man's version of a Fallkniven.

The BK2 Campanion is thick, thus heavy for its size, but at the same time very durable.

Its always a toss up between a Leatherman or Vic SAK. But I dont pop bottles too often, and I need pliers more than a cork screw, so thats why I got the Leatherman.
I guess in a camping/survival situation it don't matter too much.. but I plan on getting a SAK in the near future (after these purchases of course.. haha..)

@ syltetoy: So you have the BK7, SRK, etc etc, and you like your 12" CS Barong machete? It would do just as good as the others?

@ grindermcgee, syltetoy & ankerson: So ya'll recommend the CS Bushman eh? No complaints? Good value? Hmm..

I'll look more into a folding saw, Fiskars axe, CTD Rough Use knife, Ontario sawback camp machete, the CS Master Hunger, 12" Barong machete and Bushman.

I would love a Busse, but I can't see myself spending clost to $200 for a knife. I would rather buy a 22 rifle or something.

A RAT would be nice, but money is tight right now. I did see that RC4, but I didnt have the $85 to spend on a knife at the time; still dont :(

I think a pocket folding knife, my LM Wave, a few Frost Moras, and some kind of chopper will do.. Still dont know which one though.. BK7? A Cold Steel?

Yeah, I would think that this site would help me (not that it hasnt), but it seems like Im just getting in deeper and deeper, and its too late to turn back.. haha.

Anyways, BF is great! And thanks for all of the suggestions and info..

I seem to do a lot of chopping when camping and the 12 inch CS Barong will out chop any 6-9 inch survival knife. The CS Barong blade is a little thicker than the standard CS machete at 3mm. The 13 inch Cold Steel Kukri machete is an awesome chopper, the blade is 2.75mm thick. I "personally" prefer the CS Barong blade shape as a utility knife over the Kukri but the Kukri is a better chopper.

I have the CS Pendleton Hunter also and its an extremely sharp well designed knife.

The CS Bushman is a must have inexpensive tough reliable knife.

I have most of the KA-BAR Becker knives and I think you can do much better for a lot less money.

I was thinking of going with the Beckers because of their rep and I like how it looks.. haha. But it seems like Cold Steel can offer the same uses but at a lower price..

Im not a big fan of the Kukri shape blade. And the only bad thing I have to say about the 12" machete is that it seems cumbersome to lug around. The Bushman looks ok. I'll do more research on the CS knives..

Decisions, decisions.. *sigh*

I agree the Kukri isn't my style either but its a mean chopper.

The 12 inch CS machetes are not that large to carry around camp and can double as a hatchet to utility knife. The Becker BK7 or BK9 is as heavy and cannot compare at chopping or batoning wood for fire and you'll pay a lot more for less knife. I personally like a 10 inch or larger camp knife and a CS Bushman as a compliment. Again the CS Trail Hawk is nice to have along also.

If you also need knife status a Busse will give you that and perform as well but not a KA-BAR Becker in my opinion.

Im not much of a cool/fanboy/status type guy. I buy what I like and what works. And its a plus if I can get it at a good deal/value. I also like doing research and talking to people about the items of interest.

Seems like CS may be the ticket. Thanks syltetoy for your thoughts and recommendations. Looks like I'll drop the BK7 and pick up some CS knives..

I know if your looking for a tough camping knife/tool the Cold Steel 1055 steel and GI Tanto, Bushman knives will get the job done and last forever.

I chopped dried dead fallen trees and branches; which were hard as a brick for fire wood all weekend long with the CS Kukri machete and when I got home it would still slice newspaper like it did before I left on the camping trip. I was amazed with it. I don't have the need for anymore from a camp knife.

So none of you Cold Steel knives chipped or failed you when you were chopping stuff up?

Im not a big fan of machetes, or blades other than bowie types, but if it gets the job done, especially at that price, I cant argue..

I was thinking:
CS Kukri machete
CS Barong machete
CS Bushman

Which one would you pick for everything that a Frost Mora cant do while camping?

RC6,Izula,and a S.A.K,would suit most needs well.
I'd replace the S.A.K with a Leatherman S2 Juice. But, other than that, I agree 100%. For something in the $80 range, you might want to check out the Kershaw Outcast (D2 steel).

Defining what you are going to do is key. Food prep is better done with Stainless and a SAK is generally too short. I always have a SAK to the point that I forget that I have it when discussing knives. Much like a pen and notepad it is always there.

I have some carbon laminated Moras and they are excellent craft knives but rust quickly. I find carbon (non stainless) a nuisance and the care a hassle if it is raining. I stick with stainless for wet chores, carbon for chopping and heavy camp work with knives of >7".
