Looking for a decent backpack

I'm looking at Maxpedition's offerings trying to find a decent sturdy backpack. I have one that's kinda old and the straps aren't looking too healthy. It was a fairly cheap one anyway so I figure I got my money's worth.

I want something like a military 3 day pack, but not in that silly digital camo, and with two shoulder straps.

Recommendations?

Obligatory Becker content:

Depending on size, 5.11 makes the Rush series, 12,24 and 72.
Rush 12 is about the size of a student back pack
Rush 24 is like a big "patrol" pack
Rush 72 is your 3 day pack.
They are very well build, have MOLLE webbing, and can accommodate the Rush 10 Mobile Operation Attachment Bag(MOAB) piggy backed on to it. All have a lot of storage dividers and such.

I have the Rush 24 with an EMT pouch and the MOAB, which can detach and be used as a stand alone EDC type bag. IMO its a pretty sweet setup with enough space for most of my camping and hunting trips. If I need more space I load up my ILBE main ruck and go (slowly) its heavy and huge.

I'm a huge newb so I'll just ask. What blade is that? Looks like the handles on the Becker series but didn't know they made one that length.

That's an old Camillus Becker Patrol Machete.

They don't make 'em anymore.

I have a 5.11 RUSH 24 and I love it. I have used it for everything from camping, hiking, storing my laptop and note tablet, even taking the kids to Legoland for 2 days. It replaced all my other backpacks. I am getting a moab 6 pack to put my small necessity items in for easy access. I looked at condor and blackhawk and they felt so cheap after feeling the RUSH packs.

Just picked up this one tonight. I'll post more about it once I give it a whirl.

I just got a multicam rush 72 today. I haven't been able to do anything with it, but the quality is unreal.

Walmart? I looked at those. Absolutely a rush series knockoff but seemed like an ok bag. I'll be curious of your thoughts after its put through the paces.

I had a Max Falcon II. It was okay with lighter loads, but I got a Kelty MAP 3500, and sold the Max. I did take a photo next to the Falcon II. I could easily fit the whole Falcon II inside the MAP. The MAP I have is Ocean Grey, but it has a greenish color. I've only done smallish hikes with it. Not sure if you could get 3 days out of it or not. Murph could enlighten ya on that though, he has, or at least had one.:

That looks to be about the right size. I'm not talking about literally three days but the 3-Day type packs are about the size I'm looking for. I usually don't take much with me. I tend to travel light.

^^^^^^^^This and be done with it.

I have a Camelbak that I used in Astan. Traveled all over that god forsaken sh/thole with it. I even used it daily for the 2+ years I've been back and it has never failed me, not once. It's The large size, I forget what its actually called. I paid $159.00 back in early 09 and it has more than paid itself off. If I were going to replace it, it would be another one just like it. The only con is, its heavy even without a bunch of stuff in the pockets.

I wouldn't presume to think its better or worse than any other pack, but since I have not had to replace it and its still got another 10 years left on it, I don't need it to be better.

I like having a pack thats modular but I didnt want something that sticks out---I wanted something I could carry around town but also take it in the woods---not a fan of camo at all--I didnt really want tactical black, od or khaki----they stand out too much to me---I love the look of foliage green---I did try on a 5.11 rush 24 and loved it and considered getting one in one of the aforementioned colors because I liked the pack so much----then I found the pack of all packs (to me anyway)---Spec OPS T.H.E. (tactical holds everything) pack in foliage green and it is made in the US---And the best part is they just marked the foliage green down so I got it for a hundred bucks. Now I believe they are all marked down to that---The pack is amazing. Its tough as nails, looks good and the inside is a bright yellow so your gear contrasts against it quite nicely. The only issue I have is that the front 2 pockets do not have any sort of organization (pockets, sleeves, etc...) but I keep all my gear separated in pouches/bags so its not that big of a deal to me. You will not regret buying this pack---

I perfer the 5.11 packs to the MaxPed because IMO they are much more comfortable to wear and the quality is a little better. That Wally World pack looks interesting. I may have to go on the hunt for one tomorrow.

I know next to nothing about Rush packs. I do have a pack or two though (I have a couple of stoves also), and when I saw the size and quality of the Fieldline pack for forty clams, I decided to try it. Granted, it's China made, but from what I just read, so are the Rush bags. I own some Fieldline hunting gear, and it has held up well and, like this tactical pack, has a lifetime guarantee. Mainly. I liked this one as an an inexpensive BOB I could keep in the truck.

Roger this. I bought the $100 BOB special they ran (pack, CM sheath, accessory pouch). Great pack. I did spring for the $30 internal frame insert though.
