Looking for a decent field axe/hatchet

:thumbup:Estwing! Ive got two. One I got for 2 bucks at a flea mkt and the leather handles were rotted.Replaced them with a 550 cord wrap handle that's very comfy. Picked up another the other day at my FFL guy's shop out of a box of user knives.--10$!! Its got a brass buttplate/keeper for the leather handle that says Estwing on it. Does anyone know if this denotes an older model? The cord wrap handle one is fun to throw. It seems to be indestructible. I got Siguy to put a convex edge on it and it's a real chopper!--KV

Here is the Estwing I picked up, as you can see I had to use it even before pictures. Doug

That's the one I have... I tried to dye the sheath black... and it turned purple LOL. The Hatchet is built like a little tank though.

I just took mine to the buffer to get a little finer edge. it now push cuts paper real nice. Doug

Home Depot has that one too. I think they were like 35, not much difference in price then the hatchet.

Man! My Home Depot sucks... All they have is a fiskars and then a small collection of junk axes. Maybe the one in Gainesville or Anderson SC will have one. I gotta get that Axe... Lifetime warranty too... for the price of a GB I can buy two and if one breaks I can rotate in the other while the first one is getting fixed LOL. And I'll still have enough money left over to buy supplies.

The two axes aren't even close. I have both and never use the Estwing anymore. It can't hold an edge. It's been described here in the past as a good beater axe. It's not crap at all... but it's a step down from a GB.

Yeah Yeah... I Know... GBs are great. I get all the chopping I need done with a regular old Axe. The kinda axe men have been using forever... I don't need the super dooper model. $100.00 Plus for an axe is crazy talk to me... Besides... let's say for a second you're right and the Estwing won't hold an edge as long... cause I know it WILL hold an edge long enough... but for argument's sake the GB holds an edge longer... so what... It's not like I don't know how to sharpen an axe. I got a diamond file that makes my Estwing Hatchet shave. And it chops all day long. Look I get it... I like Busse knives and those are expensive as crap... and many here think the Moras do just fine... I'm that way with my axes... I don't need a $250.00 axe when a $45.0o Estwing does all I need it to and it's got a lifetime warranty. Make perfect sense to me. If I were in the business of cutting wood... it was my trade... sure... maybe then I'd buy the absolute best... but as long as it's just me chopping enough wood for my personal needs... Estwing all the way baby. I'll use the money for other things.

I have 3 GB's and think they are top of the line. However what you say has merit.

When I got mine I think the Hunters cost me 75, the mini I got used off KF for 75(later replaced with a brand new one by GB when it broke on me) and I think the Wildlife, which I bought last was $56 bucks??

Now all of the ones I have have just about doubled in price and I'm not sure I wouldn't just go for something cheaper or a custom.

Hey, I'm in tune with not spending big bucks too. (I did buy the Estwing after all.) I can tell you that the axe worked OK for light duty camping chores. If I had to buy a general purpose long-handled axe again, I'd get something better at splitting. Hope you like yours.

I have some chopping time under my belt now with a Wetterlings Carpenter. Im a fan.

Yeah... I'm not absolutely sure about their prices but is a fullsized GB axe like $200.00? I mean... if I could get a large GB axe for about $65.00 to $75.00 then I'd be on board.
