Looking for a fixed blade fighting knife for about $200 or less.

I completely agree that knives make poor defensive tools. Now that that is out of the way I am looking for a fixed blade fighting knife, not a utility knife with some tactical features but a full fighting focused knife with a bit of practical usability sprinkled in (if such a thing exists). I don't need such a knife, I just want one. I already have all manner of practical and utility knives and now I really just want something to please my inner 14 year old mall ninja self.

Here is what I am thinking:

  • Ideally US made
  • Less than $200 (with some wiggle room)
  • Fixed blade
  • Full tang
  • Stainless steel
  • Between 4.5" and 6.5"
  • Not overly thick (maybe around .15" thick)
  • Not overly heavy, needs to be a quick and nimble knife
  • Simple design (no recurve, in your face American tanto, or fancy Persian inspiration, though some simple elegant Japanese inspiration is okay)
  • No nonsense, straight to the point design (there should not be any features that need to be explained)

I don't know all too much about this stuff and my parameters above are just general guidelines that can be bent and broken. If a knife is really thin like the CRKT Hisshou or Hissatsu then I may not mind so much it being longer than the above parameters. Really though it does need to be a quick and nimble knife, besides that any of the above parameters can be broken if needed. If this was a couple decades ago I would be getting the Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife, but I am looking for something a bit more modern, robust, and a smidgen more practical.

I am often not a fan of knives that have a large choil in front of the bolster (such as the ESEE 4) as I find utilizing the forward choil brings my hand higher on the knife than I would like for my purpose (though it definitely aids in fine control, not arguing that) and not utilizing the choil I feel my hand it too low. I also feel such choils can waste precious blade real estate.

I have been looking at Entrek knives and I have been liking them a lot but I just think they cost about %25 more than what I am willing to pay for what they are offering. I especially like the looks of their Commando (though it is a bit longer than what I would see as ideal) and their Merc knife.

I am also looking real hard at the Benchmade Nimravus (drop point plain edge) too, as of now this knife seems to have made its way to the top of my list.

Any suggestions? I am willing to hear any ideas really.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I feel I should mention that I want this knife to be a bit...dare I say...tacticool. Also I am fairly firm on wanting a stainless steel or at least something that is coasted. And when I say USA made mainly I mean I want to avoid knives that have been produced off shore in order to offer them cheaply in the American market. Quality indigenous foreign designs are %100 okay.

Check out Kim Breed. He makes some great dedicated fighters, but they are pricy, maybe above your limit.

Not stainless and 1/2" longer than your 6.5", but one you can get razor sharp... Ka-Bar Becker BK-7.

Ka-Bar Becker BK-7

I already own a BK16, a BK2, and a BK9. I love them but I am looking for something a bit more aggressive and nimble than a Becker at the time being. Something lighter, thinner, and with a more aggressive point.

I have been thinking about grabbing a BK7 but that would be another time.

It does fit my criteria well but...and I am a bit ashamed to admit this...I want something that looks tacticool. If not I would probably be picking up a Bark River (besides the fact that there are not many stainless BRKTs in my price range).

Either way: tacticool.

Have you looked at Boker's Applegate-Fairbairn fixed blades? They are currently available in a few different sizes. They can be had for around $100 or less depending on the model. They're made from 440C up around 58 RC. The handle is Delrin or something like that. They are pretty nice looking knives.

Cold Steel's Leatherneck knife http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-39...d=1381981462&sr=1-9&keywords=cold+steel+knife Fits all of the above criteria, with the exception of the blade being one quarter inch longer than maximum desired blade length.

Also possible is the Cold Steel SRK http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Kr...=1381981462&sr=1-24&keywords=cold+steel+knife

Not USA nor stainless. Working fixed blades, esp by pig hunters, differentially heat treated L6 axe steel.

How about the SOG Bowie? Its a proven design, been used in combat, looks great, feels great in the hand, and is affordable.

You'll actually find good info in Prac Tac on this one :)

Fighting knives come in two varieties:

Thick 7+" piercing
Thin, various, slicers

I'm not sure today's AUS-8 stainless steels were used in combat when the SOG company first started supplying knives to the troops.

Kim Breed

Those do look really nice, where can I find out more about them?

Boker's Applegate-Fairbairn fixed blades

Forgot about those, I'll definitely consider them.

Cold Steel's Leatherneck knife...Cold Steel SRK

Nothing against Cold Steel and I appreciate that they manage to offer a lot of interesting deisgns at a price range a lot of people can afford but for some reason I am just not a fan of them.

Not quite what I had in mind but I'll definitely consider them, I do love Svord.

SOG Bowie

Not really a fan of SOG, though that knife (obviously Randall inspired) does attract me more than a lot of their other designs.

Truth be told, the troops would have rather had today's AUS-8 used in the SOG bowie than the original gun blued carbon steel, especially in the Vietnam jungle...

If you're just going to look at it, why not just find one that looks nice?

If you're looking for knife fights, just pick up a kitchen knife :)

I came in here to mention the CRKT Hisshou but saw you named it in your post. I feel it's up there with the best of them in terms of weight/reach/functional design. It's looks might not be everyones taste but the functionality of the design is hard to beat imo.
