I completely agree that knives make poor defensive tools. Now that that is out of the way I am looking for a fixed blade fighting knife, not a utility knife with some tactical features but a full fighting focused knife with a bit of practical usability sprinkled in (if such a thing exists). I don't need such a knife, I just want one. I already have all manner of practical and utility knives and now I really just want something to please my inner 14 year old mall ninja self.
Here is what I am thinking:
I don't know all too much about this stuff and my parameters above are just general guidelines that can be bent and broken. If a knife is really thin like the CRKT Hisshou or Hissatsu then I may not mind so much it being longer than the above parameters. Really though it does need to be a quick and nimble knife, besides that any of the above parameters can be broken if needed. If this was a couple decades ago I would be getting the Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife, but I am looking for something a bit more modern, robust, and a smidgen more practical.
I am often not a fan of knives that have a large choil in front of the bolster (such as the ESEE 4) as I find utilizing the forward choil brings my hand higher on the knife than I would like for my purpose (though it definitely aids in fine control, not arguing that) and not utilizing the choil I feel my hand it too low. I also feel such choils can waste precious blade real estate.
I have been looking at Entrek knives and I have been liking them a lot but I just think they cost about %25 more than what I am willing to pay for what they are offering. I especially like the looks of their Commando (though it is a bit longer than what I would see as ideal) and their Merc knife.
I am also looking real hard at the Benchmade Nimravus (drop point plain edge) too, as of now this knife seems to have made its way to the top of my list.
Any suggestions? I am willing to hear any ideas really.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I feel I should mention that I want this knife to be a bit...dare I say...tacticool. Also I am fairly firm on wanting a stainless steel or at least something that is coasted. And when I say USA made mainly I mean I want to avoid knives that have been produced off shore in order to offer them cheaply in the American market. Quality indigenous foreign designs are %100 okay.
Here is what I am thinking:
- Ideally US made
- Less than $200 (with some wiggle room)
- Fixed blade
- Full tang
- Stainless steel
- Between 4.5" and 6.5"
- Not overly thick (maybe around .15" thick)
- Not overly heavy, needs to be a quick and nimble knife
- Simple design (no recurve, in your face American tanto, or fancy Persian inspiration, though some simple elegant Japanese inspiration is okay)
- No nonsense, straight to the point design (there should not be any features that need to be explained)
