Looking for a Folding Tanto (or broad blade) with these Features

Hey, everyone. I'm pretty set with knives to carry around for now, but I'm looking for a folding tanto or something with a broad blade that has a decently large blade, is solid overall, and has a pronounced tip (it's not too chisel-like). I would prefer a lockback & to have a handle without too many finger grooves (doesn't always fit the hand & I like being able to hold it with the blade in any direction). Would like a wave or at least a thumb hole & an ambidextrous pocket clip. It'd be good if I could pry a little bit with it.

Jsut looking for what's out there along these lines. The Cold Steel Recon 1 looked pretty good, but was expensive & I've heard the lock wears down real quick (something about not using as high of quality materials for the parts). The Zero Tolerances also looked good, but they're also expensive & HEAVY. The Kershaw CQC knives looked pretty good- I might like a longer blade.

Save up and keep and eye out these two are my favourite but are expensive and only come up on the exchange once in a while.

That is a BS rumor started by Cold Steel haters. The Tri-Ad lock will probably outlast you.

The recon 1 would probably be the best bang for your buck and they are not that expensive for the materials that are used. I was not always the biggest fan of Cold Steel but the past few years has really changed my opinion on their products.

That being said, you can get a closeout ZT620 right now which is a great knife.

Talwar would be another option, the handle fits many sizes, shapes and hand grips/positions, no awkard grooves as exaggerated as they may look.

Waved, broad (really broad) blade, stout tip, strongest lock...

That Talwar looks pretty good. So does the ZT620, but doesn't the frame lock open from your grip? I'd think holding it left-handed would make it open (especially if there are forces on the blade hauling things around). The Cold Steel Recon 1 XL with a wave (or a thumbhole I could turn into a wave) would have been great! Are any of these knives much cheaper if they aren't a tanto blade? It doesn't HAVE to be, especially if all the other features are good (just somewhat my preference).

The Gerber 06 and Pro-Tech CQC7 might be worth considering. Note that both are autos, which isn't a problem for me but might be for others.

What do you mean, open from your grip? Usually on frame locks, your grip is keeping it locked in place even more. Unless I'm misunderstanding the question?

The recon 1 can't be beat for your needs and it is exactly what you are looking for. The lock is bomb proof and if the knife were made in the USA it would be double the price. If I had to grab one folder to bet my life on out of all of the $200 plus knives I own, it would be the recon 1 tanto. And please for the love of God don't buy a voyager and put an ugly ass zip tie where the the thumb stud should be. It is very easy to whip out of the pocket and fling open without even touching the thumb stud.

I ve been carrying sevral Cold Steel models for the past couple of years. The locks remain strong, the materials are quite good with excellent heat treatment on first rate blade steel. The price is a definite bargain. That is one overbuilt knife and not too heavy.

Recon 1 is the way to go. Recon 1 XL could work too.

Tanto one is awesome, carries very nicely in the pocket.

No need to zip-tie, you can do ZIP + NUT. Works even better

And IMO looks acceptably nice. Rawles Voyager would be a great alternative.

Better value than the Recon, not as hefty but way cheaper.

I don't know anything about a Triad lock wearing down "real quick". My Recon 1 Tanto is my daily driver. I use the crap out of it. No pin wear, or rocker lock wear. And the Triad has the stiffist, non wiggle, zilch blade play lockup of any folding knife on earth.

Stainless steel wears down slower than titanium. And lock backs (the Triad in particular) have much more surface area in contact between components than either the axis, liner, compression, and frame lock.

Wears down? That is the last thing a Triad does. Expensive? I bought my XHP Recon 1 Tanto on the exchange for $40.

I wonder which nonsense we'll hear next? Probably something like "the Triad looks good and strong, but I hear that it will rob your house while you're asleep, stealing all of your left socks".

No. I'm betting it's never happened.
