Looking for a knife for a get-home bag.

In my get home bag, I have a Mora 511 and a Condor Hudson Bay. The former for the usual knife stuff, the latter for heavy duty stuff. Both are good, reliable blades, but neither are so precious that I mind banishing them to the trunk of the car.

+1. Condor has a bunch of stuff well within your price range...

I'd go with something like a Svord 280H ( 7 inch, wood handle), or, if smaller and lighter and cheaper is desired the 1990NZ ( 4.5 inch, wood handles). These are in the 40's to 60's dollar range, using 15N20 or L6 ingot steel, which is tough, and sharpens easy with the convex edge ( bring a sheet of sandpaper with you in your GHB). Both the steel, and the wood grips are suitable for cold weather whithin limits naturally.

Light, inexpensive, tough, quality steel, etc. What more would want for a knife carried more than used. A coating of paste wax, or clear liquid silicone will keep the steel free of oxidation as long as you put it up with no corrosive elements on the blade ( fingerprints even), and don't leave it in a leather sheath that's wet.

Other examples are the Ontarios in 5160, the Blind horse knives in O-1 at around $130 on up.

None of these are Ferhmans, or Busse's but they are great at what they do, and for the price they are excellent. Many, many more choices as you go up in price. Right below $200 is the Spyderco Bushcrafter in O-1. It's extremely well thought out, and build quality and materials impress me more than many more expensive knives.

Good luck.

hard to advise when the poster does not say more about 'getting home'. From where, to where? Distance. Urban or rural.

In my daily bag, I have a Swill Army multi tool, and a RAT 1 folder. I may add others, but those are always there. In my BOB, I have a CS pocket Bushman, a folding saw, and a 12 inch Wetterlings ax. Again, depending on where I am going, other edged tools may be added.

I maintain homes in Miami, as well as in North Central Florida. Urban preps can be much different from rural preps.

well, it boils down to personal choice. The BK9 would be my first choice, but I also have the Ontario SP52 & 50, which are flat grinds as per the OP. All of them great knives and below $100, tho I prefer the Becker grips. The 9 is also lighter, it being 3/16" thick. With a bit more to spend, the SYKCO 911 is also pure bad-assery.

I had a problem with my Ontario SP51. the blade has a wiggle inside the kraton handle after 1 year of use.
