Looking for a new fixed blade

Knifemakers "for sale" area. Again.

Off the top of my head. And what I know.

Hankins: no nonsense and tough.

Bradshaw blades: Cool grinds, cool designs.

Big Chris: supersteels

Bona: little flashier

Michael Presnell: forged, old style

And so many more......Course you could always buy a Buck.

I would throw in David Crawford and Milan Mozolic, Chris Lambeth and others who were already listed, who post on our Customs for sale--Fixed Blades forum.

Yeah I'm up for spending less as long as the quality is there. Mostly it sits in the sheath. I just like to have it if I need it over something my folder isn't up to the task of. I'd like a fairly thick blade for when I do go camping and need the baton action. I do like those ka bars that were mention and the esee. One of those I might go with till I find someone to do a custom job. I do dig some of the stuff Bradshaw blades is doing and I'll check out some of the other people mentioned.

Hey hardball i have big hands and when I hold a smaller knife to do any work my knuckles usually get messed up so I want a slightly longer blade to get my hand kinda out of the way. That is a nice knife you suggested I wish I could hold all these knifes in one place to see what's best fit

That leaves out the Esee 4, the handle is on the smaller and less ergonomic side. I do agree that 4-5 is a large blade for edc. What would you want the overall length?

Hi Its,

Yea....I hear ya. I too have pretty XL hands. Still, for some weird reason, my favorite group of (fixed blade) knives are rather small with an OAL of about.....6" to 8" and with most blades being about 3" to 4" length. I too wish I could hold all these knives to test for fit. Sometimes....I just have to "wing it". My second favorite group of knives are a bit longer (like that TOPS HOG 4.5) I just received this lil' beauty....it's a SOLID/STOUT lil' knife!

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/783718-TOPS-BTK-Bird-amp-Trout-Knife I also have this lil' beauty on it's way before too long :

I just figure (for me) I'm more likely to have one of these smaller size knives "on my person" (as opposed to a larger knife) at any given time.
Of course, that is not to say I don't keep "larger" knives handy. Oooh, I also recently got one of these lil guys as well :

I plan to strip the Black coating and find some nice scales/handles. All this being said.....that TOPS HOG 4.5 (especially considering it's cost) could be in my future. Let's us know what you decide.

Regards,
HARDBALL

I'd take a look at the Knife Makers Market here on the forums. For that price range you can get something really nice, made in the US, by hand and support a small craftsman (independent craftsman, not like a gnome or anything). Someone could probably even custom make something for that price range.

I second Druk's suggestion. For that price there are some great custom makers on this forum and you will have something unique instead of just production - and support our knife artists.

Dogwoods Custom knives is another maker on here that's a pleasure to do business with, you can get a really nice Echo-5 built for you within your budget. I just got a beautiful Blue Firefly, CPM154, Dogwood scandi with opaque blue pins the other day... and have another green Firefly that should be done soon (long story as to why I got two... I keep meaning to post about it, but busy busy busy) but anyways, again, Dan is an absolute pleasure to work with, truly a talented maker and awesome business ethics!

An LT Wright Genesis is also a great choice....

And an ESEE-5 may be quite large/thick but I absolutely love mine... Paired with a HedgeHog Leatherworks sheath it's something else... I'm never without that knife. But for EDC I don't think you could go wrong with an ESEE 3 or 4.

(I'll edit in pics soon.... I'm having difficulties....)

I can second Dan's (Dogwood Custom Knives) work. Very clean craftsmanship. Survive! knives are great for the price too, 3.5 or 4.1, depending on how thick you're used to for blades, but I'd recommend thinner with particle steels if you can.

Get one made!

Production: I'd like to add the Chris Reeve / Harsey Professional Solder to the mix. That knife doesn't get enough oove its really nice AND you have a knife from an awesome maker / designer team.

Battle Horse knife ( used to be BHK , Blind Horse knife) Scandi or FFG Bushcraft 4 inch o-1, Micarta . Very comfortable for extended hard use. Excellent Heat treat with 3 Cryo. rc 59-60 appx. $149.95

Excellent all around tough little knife with excellent steel, wonderful heat treat and great ergonomics.

Not a BF dealer so PM me if you need the name. Yes, I have one.

I agree with looking here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/754-For-Sale-Fixed-Blades
I'm sure John at JK Knives could do what you want and stay within your budget. When selecting a fixed blade for EDC keep in mind the importance of the sheath. I have a couple blades that get carried more than others because of the sheath. I frequently carry a fixed blade and prefer one that rides comfortably out of sight with good retention from the sheath and no straps. You may want to check your local laws before doing so.

Yeah California it has to be in a sheath open carry so out of sight isn't really an option

Ok little update! I have come in contact with a bk16 and a bk2 and I hated the finish on them and yes I know I can strip it and sand it nice but I don't want to do that otherwise those knifes are amazing . Those two knives will probably come later. Also I'm thinking the blade length I asked about could be a bit excessive so I'm lookin in the 3 and 4 inch range and there are two that stand out the zero tolerance 0121 and the boker ridgeback. Yes I know boker is made in Germany but that's ok I have no hatred of Germany lol. Does anyone have experience with these blades? Getting the boker will allow me to save more for a real sweet custom down the road since it's like 60 bucks right now.
