Looking for a new knife

As I just posted in another thread:

A couple of mid-range suggestions would be.... what I consider the best all-round, knockaround knife, the original HEST fixed blade by Rowen. $100-ish new, much less pre-owned.

Also the Gryphon M-10 makes a comfortable carry with a more traditional blade. Also $100-ish.

I love the look of the HEST, how does it compare to the Izula and Izula 2?

Help me decide on a new knife to buy. Preferably a fixed blade with a blade length under 4 inches for general use and maybe bushcraft. My budget is 150 australian dollars.

I'm curious about the words "preferably" and "maybe" in your post. It suggests to me that you may not yet have a fixed blade and that you are just starting working with wood with knives (which is excellent).

If this is true, I'd recommend experimenting with several inexpensive knives with different blade styles, so that you can you learn *YOUR* personal preferences.

In particular, I'd recommend that you get Mora Companion (fixed, Scandi grind) and either the Svord Peasant or Opinel #10 (both folder and flat ground). Then spend time goofing around with wood in your back yard.

I prefer the Companion for wood working but prefer a folder for carry but that's me and you're you. I wouldn't be spending $100 on a knife unless I knew for sure it was a style I really, really knew I would like and I certainly wouldn't be spending that money on what other people liked.

Good advice - I have a few fixed blades, and I already own a mora companion, svord peasant mini and an opinel #6.

I know what type of blade I like, I was just thinking of getting another one. I said preferably because I prefer smaller blades but I'm open to new ideas, and maybe because I already have a dedicated bushcraft knife so I might not use it for that.

I'm not too big a fan of the companion as the scandi ground edge doesn't hold up too well when carving Australian hardwood.

I prefer to carry fixed blades because I have found most stainless steel folding knives (e.g Spyderco) doesn't hold an edge very long compared to my carbon steel fixed blades. Folders are also a nuisance to clean when full of dust and sand (here in Australia we have lots of both).

Many knives don't work for me due to Australian hardwood being so tough.
