hey all, my name is Jon, and i am a 15 year old knife enthusiast. i spend just about any money i could find on a good quality pocket knife.

currently i own: a cold steel kukri machete, kershaw scallion, leatherman kick, and several other crappy big 5 pieces of junk

i have been saving up $100 for a new, high quality pocket knife. This baby needs to be a workhorse that will last me quite a while. i also want a knife that is aestheticaly pleasing, i dont wanna spend 100 big ones on a knife i don't like looking at!

i come to you guys, the real experts, to find out any suggestions as to what would be a good EDC self defense/general use knife.

i have a few knives in mind, are these good/bad/P.O.S?

CRKT Hissatsu Folder

[ Cold Steel Ti-Lite

Kershaw Cyclone

Benchmade Griptilian

I also plan on purchasing a self defense "neck knife", The CRKT Bear Claw.
I dont see much about this knife online, anybody know if its any good?

Thanks in advance guys! i really appreciate the advice.

-Jon

PS i know this is posted in the reviews and testing forum, i hadnt realised that general would be a better place for this thread. my bad!

PSS the links arent working :( put the names into knifecenter.com and you'll see what im talking about.

No offense young man but I don't think anyone here would recommend a "neck knife" to a 15 year old. Slow down kiddo, pocket knives are one thing but I think you should discuss these types of knife purchases (self defense knife?) with your parents first.

moreso than anything else, i will be purchasing the neck knife as a collectible. My parents have fully approved this (my father anyways) and i promise i wont go shaking anyone down for their lunch money with it.

ive been mugged at knife point twice... i simply want a knife that i know can react in an emergency situation.

i appreciate the concern, but i can assure you that these knives will be used as a collectible, at most a tool used during daily life.

None of your links work. They all have ... in them. There's no such URL with ...

Anyway, just by the names you gave... I have a Ti-Lite. By no means would I use this knife for work. It is purely my defense knife.

The Griptilian or Mini Griptilian would make a great work knife. They are strong and tough. The Cyclone I've heard is good as well, but I would definitely trust a Grip.

And as for defense: you should really think twice about that one. If you were getting mugged at knife point, do you think it would be wise to pull a knife out as well? I would think that you would only get you into more trouble (not with the law; the attacker might find that threatening and actually hurt you).

If you're getting a knife for defense, you'd better really know what you're doing. Be careful.

Don't use a knife for self defense. It's a stupid thing to do just give them your $20 that's in your wallet or try to run away.

I like the SOG Twitch XL (assisted opener) and the SOG Mini-Vulcan. I have started carrying the MV in the last month and have been quite please with it. My wife always raises an eyebrow every time I flip it open when I plan on cutting something. It's fast. She never notices me reaching for it, just the snap when the blade comes out and locks. It would be a good EDC which is what I use it for. Cost is about $85.

I'd avoid knife fights like the plague. I think I'd rather have the plague. Skip the neck knife until you get older.

Father approving it or not, if you get caught with a neck knife which is a concealed weapon, being only fifteen, you're going to get in some major trouble.

The griptilian is an excellent choice for a good UTILITY knife imo. It's not on your list but I'd recommend a Case trapper.

We are all young once I guess...used to carry a Gerber Guardian when I was 16 or so. My father hated the idea and gave me a .25 auto instead for self protection, after giving me a lowdown on what would happen to me if I use either. This in a country where getting caught with either one would mean jail time even for a minor.

Got wise and didn't carry both. Just avoided staying out late and mixing with the wrong people. But I understand how you feel...maybe you can carry it around the house or admire it inside the privacy of your room til the time comes when your age would be more appropriate for you to be carrying such knives.

Anyway, why don't you add a good spyderco knife to that collection...like a MIlitary or Para or even a brace of Endura's. Those will last you a long time and "If" a situation comes when safety is paramount over anything else those will serve you well for that use too.

And it will be more easily explainable than a Bear Claw or any knife that looks aggressive to LEO's in the event you get searched.

Much better for this, a neck knife is a good wepon

Get yourself a Spyderco Delica or Endura. OR any # of their knives; they ARE excellent!

The cyclone or griptillian would be great work knives, the others you mentioned are more for self-defense than utility. Another great candidate would be a endura, like TKC suggested, if you want a working knife that could double for SD if its absolutely necessary. And if you're facing a fully grown man with a weapon, its better to run or give him what he wants instead of fighting.

Take a look at the Spyderco knives. The Military is a nice all around knife, big enough to do the work of a fixed blade, small enough for personal grooming, and light on pocket carry.

Neck knives have their place, but I still am uncomfortable carrying them, as they do sometimes come free from the sheath, and there is nothing worse than a razor sharp knife on the loose between my shirt and stomach..

Knife fights.... Run like hell and avoid them like the plague. There is nothing cool about a knife fight.

Think about it for a minute--The winner in a knife fight is the one that bleeds the least. Do you want to be that person?

I recommend the Alaskan Guide Buck 110, from Cabela's....

This is mine when it was all shiney and new, and after I had removed the Alaskan Guide logo from the blade.

It's basically a "top shelf" upgraded Buck 110 (a classic itself) with rosewood scales, titanium aluminum nitride blade coating, and S30V blade-steel (heat treated by Mr. Paul Bos, who's a living legend in the knife industry).
And it comes with a very nice leather pouch too.
I personally think that it's one of the best knives I've ever owned....and certainly one of the best looking!
And it's only $68.00 dollars.

Or if you prefer CPM154 blade-steel over S30V blade-steel, BassPro Shop also offers a similar Buck 110....

It's very similar to the Alaskan Guide 110, but it doesn't have a logo on the blade, the scales look a little difference (might not be rosewood, I'm not sure), and the blade coating is more like the bluing found on old pistols and revolvers.
It is also heat treated by Mr. Paul Bos and is of the fine quality that Buck is known for.

I can't tell you anything about the Hissatsu or Ti-Lite or Bear Claw, but the Cyclone and the Griptilian are both very good knives.
Overall, I think I prefer the Cyclone over the Griptilian....I just can't stand those handle scales on the Grip.

Good luck,
Allen.

thanks allen, i hadnt even thought about a buck knife...

thanks for the advice all, but i have kind of a weighted question... everyone seems to be leaning towards a spyderco of some sort, but i personally think the design is odd and the lockback might be a pain. why exactly does everyone love these knives so much?

and as for the neck knife, i've pretty much decided to keep it as a part of my collection, and little more. Like my cold steel machete, it probably won't see the light of day, sans a few cutting tests :)

You would have to have your parents buy it from someone on here but you can find the Benchmade 940 for between $90 and $100 on here from time to time. Check it out! Very smooth and a lot of blade in a small package. Looks good too. GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D

which benchmade would u suggest? the only cheap high quality model i can see is the grip, which almost has a cheap feel IMO with the handle...

remember everyone i only have 100$ max :P

I like Benchmade Griptilian BM550HG PE(plain edge) version

Yes that Cabela's Buck 110 on vitamins should be really good and sturdy. I am still waiting for mine to appear in the post but it will be worth the wait, I am sure!
That is a perfect, nice, classic knife at a decent price for the quality.

Two more interesting ones are really cheap, both are an exception to the rule that "you get what you pay for". And you'd save a lot of money.
- Browning Icestorm (which is actually a rebranded Mcusta that costs normally around $100, to be precise it uses (almost) this mcusta's handle and (exactly) this mcusta's blade . A real bargain!!!):

- Boker Trance Drop point. Very sturdy and portable. An insider's tip.

Finally, closer to your budget maximum, a racing green Spyderco Delica (with the famous ZDP 189 blade material) is another sturdy knife you won't outgrow:

> why exactly does everyone love these knives so much
Answer: because they tend to be really good. Try one in a shop.

a propos I fully agree with the others: leave the neck knife alone. When I was that age (says the 41 year old geezer) I also thought these were cool things. Oh, and ninja stars, also cool. But really, you could only get into problems with it.

PS
@AllenC: how did you remove the (ugly) logo on the blade without scratches?
