looking for a new knife...

@AllenC: how did you remove the (ugly) logo on the blade without scratches?
It was easy.
I used a razor blade followed by some MAAS Polishing Creme.
There have been a few threads in the Buck subforum about removing the logo....maybe you can get someone with gold membership to do a search and provide a link?

Good luck,
Allen.

thanks for the advice all, but i have kind of a weighted question... everyone seems to be leaning towards a spyderco of some sort, but i personally think the design is odd and the lockback might be a pain. why exactly does everyone love these knives so much?

I think you really have to see a Spyderco in real life. Lots of people here on this forum (including myself) thought that Spyderco knives were "weird" looking until they saw them in real life. I was really turned off of them when I started looking at them online. I went to my local knife shop to look at some Benchmades when I saw the Spydercos. Somehow, in real life, the blade shapes look much more appealing. Moreover, after handling them, any suspicions of the "plastic" FRN being "cheap" quickly vanished.

The Delica had caught my eye. It was just the size I was looking for, and the quality was great. I had also heard good things about the VG-10 steel. I had been looking at some $120-$150 Benchmades, and I thought, "Why should I get one of those when I can have this great knife for half the cost?" So I picked one up and have been very happy.

The Griptillians are also in the price range of the Delica, and I think those are great knives as well. You really can't go wrong with either.

i'm looking at all the spyderco folders, both pictures and some vids on youtube, and i see that the plain edged "wave" endura 4 is one sexy piece of metal... just in my price range, awesome blade steel, and it might just give me enough left over to pick up a zippo...

you guys might have just turned me, but keep the comments flowin! i dont wanna buy a knife and then see one i like even more when i have a broke bank.

thanks for the help guys

An Endura is fantastic but already pretty big. So, you may really want to compare, say, a Delica vs the Endura (or other brands' products) in a shop.

The Endura Wave is nice. My Delica is Waved (pretty much the same thing as the Endura except shorter). Personally, I think the blade shape of the Waved models is much nicer. And the Wave is so much fun :D

You won't be disappointed if you choose one!

the endura looks pretty big... is 3.8" too long for an edc? is it bulky in the pocket?

maybe a few bucks over your price range but Id go for the Benchmade 710--just go collect a few bottles and cans for a couple hours...heh. Its my fav knife and I use it all the time--love it! Spyderco are great too but the 710 is my fav

It's not that big. It's quit a slim knife, but it's very robust as well. My closed Delica just about fits in the palm of my hand (the knife sitting as if I were holding it open). I would imagine that the Endura's handle would stick out a little over half an inch on each side, then, just to give you a rough estimate...

Like I said, you probably have to check it out in real life, first. But as for my Delica, I say by no means is it bulky in my pocket, especially considering how I carry it tip-sideways :D

3" is perfect for me for EDC. +1" would also serve me well, but I chose to go for something more low-profile.

If you continue searching and discussing online, you'll never come to a decision. You need to find a store and find out which one you like. And then drop the bucks.

moreso than anything else, i will be purchasing the neck knife as a collectible. My parents have fully approved this (my father anyways) and i promise i wont go shaking anyone down for their lunch money with it.

ive been mugged at knife point twice... i simply want a knife that i know can react in an emergency situation.

i appreciate the concern, but i can assure you that these knives will be used as a collectible, at most a tool used during daily life.
When someone pulls a knife on you, and you pull out a knife, a knife fight starts, and the loser will die on the street and the winner will die on the way to the hospital.

Just throw them the 20bucks in your wallet, your life isn't worth what's in your wallet.

Check out the spyderco native

The Grip is a good knife, as are the Spyderco Delicas and Enduras. I just bought a waved Delica and a Spydie Karambit. Spydies are incredibly sharp and reliable, and I find they open quite smoothly once they're broken in.

I also have a Benchmade Ambush, which I absolutely love. IMO a Mini-Ambush would be a great carry knife.

Oh yeah, I usually carry a Spydie Native III nowadays. Neck knives are fun (I have a Bear Claw), but slower to access than a folder in the pocket.

You've been robbed twice at knifepoint and lived to tell the tale. So has my dad. He was tied up and lost over $12,000 in goods. IMO you should only use a knife defensively as a last resort. The legal and psychological ramifications of stabbing/slashing someone up are incredible. You would probably take a few cuts, no matter how good you were, and it's no fun being scarred for life. Wait until you're 21 and get a pistol permit ;)

Yeah :( Didn't realize the OP was from CA. Oops!

hey its np! ty for the advice

yah im from california... as for a concealed weapons permit i dont think that'll be a problem, my dad works executive level at dept. of corrections, and i plan on becoming some type of law enforcement.

guns will be my new fixation when the time comes, but until then a good knife is what i need! :P

Id stay away from the Hissatsu folder. I actually just bought this knife and after a bit of trying it out, I REALLY dislike the AUS-8 or temper it uses. Also the cutting edge is less than favorable in use as it has such a slant to it it's difficult at times in my cutting needs.

It does come with a rather thick edge, and even after thinning it down it still doesn't get a sharp as I like it, but that's a personal preference as it cuts just fine, but you know, I try to get that true shaving sharpness. It is a cool little knife in it's operation, fast, loud and menacing in looks but as far as an EDC there is so much better out there. The Hissatsu is a "cool knife" but not practical.

Here's the one that I pushed to the side for the CRKT

And about the using a knife for self defense, man, I'd think about that very hard. Unfortunately I've had to use a knife for defense and it's not something I'd want to EVER have to do again, EVER. A fight is one thing but a knife changes the dynamics in such an extreme way it's sickening. Like another said here, just use any means to get out of the situation alive (an a55 kicking is not bad, you live another day as does he) In time you can first learn to use a knife before you carry one for self defense, you'll live longer should you have to use it. There's alot more than slashing/stabbing the knife and feeling you hit him with it in a reality sense.

When I was about near your age and saw the ads for the Spyderco Clipits in the gun magazines I used to read, I told myself I'd never get one because it looked weird.

Years down the road, bought my first Spyderco product and then my first Endura. Now, I can't live without it on me. What do I love about it? The fact that It can do the first thing a knife should do...Cut well. For a long time at that thru various things.

The other things I love about it? It's low profile. It's relatively low maintenance. It can pass itself off as something else than a knife ( a rescue tool ) if serrated. I can open it faster than any knife I have with the exception of a fixed blade ( mine is non-waved) and if the time would come I need to get myself out of a sticky situation using it I bet it could handle it as well.

I think of my Endura as a knife equivalent of a back-up .38. It won't do any particular job well but it could try to...and you can always have one on you.

A Spyderco product is the best purchase you'd ever make. You won't regret it.

"ive been mugged at knife point twice... i simply want a knife that i know can react in an emergency situation."

you need quite a bit of training to react quickly and surely with any knife let alone a neck knife. find a good self-defense instructor to teach you awareness and street smarts in addition to techniques...or read some Marc MacYoung books in the meantime.

Oh, and +1 on the Delicas or Enduras.

If you like knives you'll find this to be a perpetual problem.

You seem to be sending two messages regarding your desire for a neck knife. On the one hand you claim you want it for self defense, but when anyone tries to give you advice about not carrying it, you turn around and say it's going to be a collectible only.

All the suggestions you received so far are good. Take a look at some Kershaw knives and their Zero Tolerence line. Good quality and performance for the money.

Secondly in my view a knife is a tool, not a weapon. It's like using a hammer for home security. Yeah you could hurt or kill someone with a hammer, but you'd most likely just get shot by whoever you are trying to scare off or attack.

And finally. Getting mugged, jumped, attacked and/or robbed has a lot to do with the position you place yourself in. If you don't want to be mugged don't travel in a bad part of town at night by yourself. Use your intelligence and sense to escape a bad situation.
