Recommendation? Looking for a nice folder/flipper for a decent price!

What I said is not political. It's a documented fact.

So you're sharing this on a device that wasn't made in that country and you're not enjoying countless other goods from that country?

Look, I understand the sentiment but be real. Taking a political stand in isolation, on one particular type of consumer product, accomplishes virtually nothing relative to this or several other issues that get brought up to support the "don't buy this knife because China" sentiment. As with economic nationalism, focus on the actual problem, its actual causes, and things you can actually do to help.

In the meantime, this is a knife forum. There are some very high quality Chinese knives at very competitive prices that will absolutely knock it out of the park on EDC duty. When it comes to meeting the OP's criteria, that's primarily what we're looking at here.

Feel like everyone should try the BM 940 at one point or another. It’s robust, can do everything, and an excellent EDC.

WE Practic maybe, m390
Sir Mike, I don't understand this part: if you will use the knife hard and often, it should be worth more to you, no ?

Assuming that - like me - you don't want to buy a knife from a country with active concentration camps, I suggest Kershaw, ZT or Buck. Plenty of great choices in the $100-$120 range.
If that were my criterion, I couldn’t buy U.S.-made knives either.

I was recommending knives to the OP based on my personal purchase criteria, which I know many on this knife forum share; I didn't say you all have to share my opinion. But: we don't know about his take on things. If he doesn't want a Chinese knife, many of the posts here are useless to him - and the fact is that there are a lot of hard-use, value folders available made in the US, Europe or Taiwan. Look no further than Buck, incredible value, typically.

And you are right, while most the devices that I use to access BF have components from the PRC, I have to use these devices. With knives, I have the choice.

True: we don't know his feelings on the matter...
But if he had a strong feeling about it: I would assume that it would have been in his original post...
If we give him all of the options that we might consider: he's can certainly dismiss any of them.

I agree. And note that his current knife is made in Japan. So I suggest you guys give him non-Chinese options too :)

Personally: I can only comment on what I actually have developed opinions on.
A lot of my American-made knives either:
might be considered too expensive
or
Aren't the type of knife I'd risk for tough use.
The cheapest Japanese-made knives I have (Spyderco); are kind of small for that kind of use, and my European knives are hunting knives...
Perhaps a used E-Bay knife might suffice?

Personally, I’d forgo the flipper and just go with this:

Boring stainless steel ? Maybe, but it’s the toughest stainless steel out there (also per Larrin)

How about an Ontario Rat 2?
About $35.00
I'm not wild about D2 steel; but it would certainly do the job!

Honestly, just go with the AUS-8 version. It costs less. It's actually stainless. They also do a decent job with their AUS-8. Under some conditions, edge retention isn't too far off from the D2 anyway. Of course, these aren't flippers.

Yes, a few options exist. That's the trouble though. It means excluding all but a tiny sliver of the pie and missing out on some really fantastic knives. Including brands like Civivi, Kizer, and Bestech just open up so many doors and the quality really is excellent.

Sure, the Chinese government does really bad stuff. I don't think anyone questions that. However, do these particular companies or their workers support that stuff? I'm guessing they support it about as much as I support the American government's constant program of war, regime change, paying or arming shady groups and/or governments the world over, etc.; or about as much as American companies supported American concentration camps for the Japanese a century ago.

The fact is that big governments do horrible things and their citizens might not even know about it, much less support it. If you want to talk more about this sort of stuff, let's do it privately. In the meantime, this is a knife forum. Let's talk about knives and not their countries of origin.

Hey all,

I guess I should clarify my needs or wants or at least what I mean by "heavy user". Now I just want a knife that buikd quilt wise and perhaps some blade thickness will allow me to not "baby" it to the degree that I will be afraid to use it for a specific chore! Do I know exactly what chores I will using it for? So besinds the basics of cutting rope, cardboard, plastic, etc . and some wood cutting/splitting/carving stuff! Probably won't baton but can't say never.

I know it's not easy to pick one knife but let's say it won't be a safe queen! I am open to any brand but do want something with very good stainless steel/properties!

I hope thus helps and I am looking for recommendations for knives that you own or have used and perhaps put thru some work with, not just ones you read about that have good ratings!

Again thx everyone fir the comments and suggestions! Yes I do want something different and new! 😆

Thanks for clarifying. Definitely look at the list of Civivi knives in 9Cr18Mov I linked at BladeHQ earlier in the thread. You'll get good flipping action and good blades made from good steel for a great price.

While the 9Cr18Mov from Civivi is exceptional, you might also be interested in 14C28N or Nitro-V. Here is a separate link to see those. (While not quite as thin as the Delica, the Bo has thin stock. Generally, I find 0.12" to be thick enough not to worry while also not thick enough to cause a lot of drag.)

EDIT: While I haven't used every model from Civivi, I have experience with several of them. I have used, carried, sharpened, and disassembled a bunch of knives from Civivi. Quality is top notch.

If it was me, (and a couple of years ago I was looking for much the same thing) I’d buy a Cold Steel American Lawman and never look back. Yep, it’s just a hair less than $100 but you only have to buy it once…..it’ll stand up to reasonably hard use, has good steel and what most believe to be the best lock of any folder.

Buck Vantage for the win! American made, lifetime warranty, available in 420HC and S30V (other blade steels if you search for 'em) flipper with a 3.25 inch blade.
