Looking for a pocket knife...

I’m looking for a pocket knife (to accompany my EDC) for when I go on shorter day hikes. I’d like something with a saw so I’ve been looking at various SAK’s. I can’t decide between the VIC OHT of the VIC Farmer. I like the idea of one hand opening and a locking blade, but neither is a necessity (my EDC already does both). I’ve heard good things of both; so, which would you buy and why?

I’m also open to other suggestions but would like to keep the price to a minimum.
Thanks.

When going sak with a saw, there's only one way to go; alox. That means the vic farmer. Alox sak's are the crown jewels of sak's for their bank vault construction, and class.

I love both, and would encourage you to get both.
However I appreciate the farmer as both a tool and a work of art.
I have a blue alox, and badly want a red one. (missed out on the amazon one, they dont ship knives to Canada anymore:grumpy:)
1 other option is the vic hunter, it has a small serrated blade in place of the bottle opener, and a plain blade instead of partially serrated.
If you do get a OHT get the german army version, looks much cooler.
green scales with a german army insignia.

if the blade isn't the most important thing (you already carry a EDC) have you ever considered a multi-tool. leatherman wave has a very nice saw, and it has pliers for nuts bolts, or even if you need to pick soemthing up but dont want to touch it.

Dang you guys are quick to respond!

I’m leaning a little towards the Farmer. How do the saws compare? I know the trekker is longer, any advantage?

Get a Multitool with some kind of saw. Maybe a LM Wave, but the older model.

the farmer is great!!! if camping I would bring a larger folding saw or axe for harvesting firewood but for emergencies and such the farmer is all you need it is a testimony to efficiency

Wouldn’t mind one, but I’m really try to go low budget here. My college tuition has me hurting for money (can barely keep my gas take full:(), so maybe when I get so more cash I’ll check it out.

I love my One Hand Trekker. I use it all the time when I'm out in the woods. I mainly use it to saw off little branches to make small traps for the rabbits, but it has sawed through a fairly thick branch before. Really great tool to have, I made a leather sheath for mine and I carry it everywhere unless I really need my SOG Powerlock (for the pliers of course).

I find the OHT to be much bigger but not a lot better in the implement dept.
The grip is more ergonomic, but nothing compares to the feel of the alox in your hand.
Red ones are going for 30 bucks now on amazon. Buy 2 and I will send you the money.:) (for you to mail it to me, of course ;))

Their both sweet. The Farmer is smaller so it fits nicer in your pocket
but I like the tools in the OHT and the easy opening. Get em both! I did :D

You don't need a multi-tool. It would be nice, but you don't need it. The Farmer has everything you need in a small package. The blade is straight edge (not serrated). The OHT is nice as well, but is larger, has a serrated blade (some don't like this) and will take up more space. You really cannot go wrong with either, but I think the Farmer fits the role of backup very well. I carry one to back everything up, everyday. It backs up my locking folder, my Charge ALX, etc. It is a classic for a reason, it gets the job done.

As usual I'll vote for the Vic Rucksack. PE blade, saw, ergonomic handle, better lock (for me) than the OHT. With alox you do lose the toothpick and tweezers if they are important to you. For a smaller package I would recommend a Vic Camper or Hiker, depending if you prefer a corkscrew or T-phillips.

Of course, a small folding saw along with your EDC may be enough for you. As you can see, you have options.

The Farmer really is a pocket knife-- that is you can carry it in your pocket comfortably. I think it makes a great pairing with a fixed blade or for EDC. It is one of those sheeple friendly SAK's that won't have half the office peeing puddles when you open a box with it :) If you want toothpick, tweezers, and scissors, the Farmer and a Classic makes a great pair.

IMHO, the Trekker is more of a one-does-it-all knife. I like that style for day hikes where you can just have one tool that is good for food prep and general cutting chores, but still get your backside out of hot water if things go wrong.

Ditto the Farmer, which is sort of a moot point by now. It's a lot of blade for something that fits in your pocket. All the tools on it are supremely functional, and I'm really fond of having a good awl/scraper on my pocket knives. Definitely not too heavy or bulky for EDC or a hike.
