I am wanting to get a rifle in .22LR to plink, hunt small game, and let my kids shoot. I do not want to spend a lot of $$$. Maybe around $200. What model would you recommend?

Ruger 10/22. Available at many Wal-marts - or at least they were the last time I checked. See rimfirecentral.com.

Basic Ruger 1022... Available at your local Wally World if I recall... Can be upgraded to the max with after market accessories, barrels, etc, but is a great, simple rifle that can be mastered at any age... Otherwise, find a decent bolt-action if you want to really refine marksmanship...

Dang, posted mine and saw Powernoodle had said the same thing as I was busy typing!!!!! LOL!!!!!

Great minds . . .

I have a pair of 10/22's, and have been wanting for a good while to pimp one of them with aftermarket parts.

Somewhere I saw that the Isreali military once used 10/22s for crowd control. The users were supposed to plink people in the legs, but they got a little out of hand and lethality became an issue. Wish I could remember that site.

In a bolt action I would consider a Winchester Wildcat, these can be found for $200.00 +/- and include 4 magazines. Another would be one of the various models of CZ.

Marlin all the way for a bolt action. I have an older 81T that will shoot half inch groups at 50 yards with cheap bulk ammo. Has to have about 5000 rounds through it now and never a bit of trouble.

The newer models have updated triggers and for $200 you should be able to get into some of their nicer guns in stainless, or even a laminated stock. They're also made in the USA.

Personally I like the tube fed models. Hold more rounds, no mags to by or keep track of and very easy to load.

mossberg 802 (i think) for like $140ish is bolt action
get a ruger 10/22 though, u can spend $200ish on the gun with unlimited accessories and upgrades available......im about to drop a grand on a new one :)
my buddy has a bolt action .22, i think its called a squirrel, idk. you can probably get one of those for <$100 just dont forget that its actually a real gun!!!! (its like 17" total)

I've handled the Wildcat a few times and it's my pick for a Bolt Action .22. The Savage GII is also a nice Bolt gun.

If you want Lever action check out the Henry H001 Levergun. It's pretty sweet. I have the H001T Which is the same gun but upgraded to a 20" Octagon barrel. It is awesome. I can hit those little Tomatoe paste cans at 70 yards no problem with it.

savage mk II .22 lr ,,,very accurate out the box ,,sometimes you can get them for under $ 200

Make sure the stock is short enough to fit the kids. Watch the weight, too.

Add an AR7 type .22LR rifle to the list of autoloaders. All but a universal fit.

If you want to tinker and have a fun, accurate gun. I vote 10/22. Over the years I've had three. Sold them like an idiot and buy another. Latest is a pawn shop one that I have added a new barrel and stock with a Leupold scope I had laying around.

I am thinking about a bolt 22mag for more power at longer ranges. Have a yote problem at the farm.

The Savage Mark II is a very nice rifle and mine is very accurate.
I would also suggest the Savage Mark 2. Mine came with a 5 rd mag, but a few spare ten rounders were pretty cheap. I got the peep sight model, which was a little more expensive but any of them are equally nice.

Autoloader
-Marlin model 60

Bolt
-Marlin 925
-Savage MKII
-CZ 452/453

Lever
-Marlin Golden 39A

I'd take a look at the CZs, but they're a little bit more than your budget. If you can swing it though, a CZ 452 is a fine rifle that'll outlast you and your kids.
