Looking for a rifle in .22LR

I was set on the Model 39 but the price was a bit more than I wanted to pay for a .22, got the Henry lever... very fun to shoot.

Ya REALLY cant be the venerable 1022.. Its cheap to start, but can be built into a true tack driver by just about anyone. Heck even out of the box they are a great little rifle.
For a bolt gun I like the Marlins, or Cricket rifles for the kids.. I also dig the pump action gallery guns out there.. Good luck!

every body has overlooked the remington 500 series of .22s

im not a big rimfire person but over the years ive collected alot of remington .22s. ive got tube fed, single shots, and semi autos. all basically the same gun with minor changed.

my newest accusitions were 3 us property marked 513t match masters, i got the barreled recievers for 25 bucks (came with the actions unexpected), the stocks and metal for 27, cant remember what i payed for 3 redfield olympic globes and redfield peep sights but ive probably got about 100 in each rifle.

me favorite is a 510 target master single shot, i can set in my basement and shoot that thing all night. my great grand mother payed 7 bucks for it in the 60s from my great uncle who picked it up on the way home after ww2 (we presume he picked it up in california)

you can find any of these 500 series in pawn shops for well under 200, the most expensive i baught was a 550 semi auto for 175 that was like new. i dont care for newer .22s to much, id much rather have a nice accurite older .22 with REAL wood and REAL metal. not to bash the 10/22 but they have there problems. a buddy baught one a while back and droped a load on it with a bull barrel, bedded and free floating stock, trigger job, ect.... it shot o.k. and it would get the job done but it never could out shoot that old pincel barreled 510. i could have had 6 or more identical vintage remingtons for the price that he put in that gawdie thing.

the really cool one that i havent been able to locate yeat was what i believe they called the remington mosquito, it was a .22lr shotgun based on the 510 single shot. theres not a whole lot of info on them but ive seen them in the past with a minature skeet thrower and clays. verry cool if you ask me.

I picked up a Rossi model 62SA dfrom a guy I work with for $75. I'm still going to get another .22 as this isn't what I was looking for, but it seems like a cool little gun for a good price.

Marlin model 60. I think it shoots much better as a stock gun than the Ruger10/22 but there aren't any aftermarket goodies for them that I know of.

I would recomend a Winchester model 67 or model 68. These are single shot bolt action rifles made between 1934 and 1965 and can still be found (I picked up a model 67 two years ago at a pawn shop for $100.00). They are chambered in .22 short-.22 long rifle, have a long barrell, are very accurate, and the firing pin has to be pulled back manually so they are very safe to teach youth firearm handling and shooting.

basically these are an adult sized 'Chipmunk' or rather are what the 'Chipmunk' was based on.

Happy shooting,
Dave

What's that goofy thing on the trigger guard? :p

If you haven't yet bought the mag release, the Tactical Solutions is the best design, IMO http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...40321&cm_ite=0054096229107a&_requestid=273155

That design may work w/ the hi-cap mags but you can't use the mag release w/ a hi-cap mag. The mag contacts the release. You can still use the 10 rnd mags, tho.

No, you are wrong.(where do you come up with that nonsense?) It works with any 10/22 mag, and cannot contact the release. I use 25 rd mags.

I'm going to pick up a 10/22 in the next month or so. Just one of those guns I've always meant to buy, but never did.

Prices have gone way up on these things though. Last time I considered one (few years back), I remember them on sale in the $109 to $129 range. Now they're over $200.

i have smalland irresponsible children hangin around, thus the trugger guard :) thanks tho!
i already have the mag release. i seriously considered the tacticalsol release but i think it just looked awkard so i bought the volquartsen one.
i have heard that the mag releases work with hi cap mags, all i can say is they sure as hell better work!

Yeah, I was just teasing you about the trigger guard thingie. :D

The TS one works well, you just press forward with your trigger finger. The Volquartsen one should work well too, any extended release is a godsend for the 10/22. I assume they all work with larger mags, since the stock release works fine with the 10 rd mags. I still need to get an automatic bolt release and a trigger job on mine.

I'd take a look at the CZs, but they're a little bit more than your budget. If you can swing it though, a CZ 452 is a fine rifle that'll outlast you and your kids.
The CZ 452 American is a pretty accurate copy of the old Winchester Model 52. The Winchester is still considered by many to be one of the finest bolt action .22 sporters ever made.

I worded that wrong. The mag release you show from Cablela's works, but the VQ and some of the others don't. I know cause my VQ mag release hits my 30 rd Eagle mags. Or maybe it's the other way 'round.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Hopefully the Butler creeks work with the release. I notice that the Eagle mags seem to be the width of the stock mag all the way up, while the Butler creek mags are inset slightly.

I have the Volquartson release on a couple of 10/22s and use the Butler Creek mags all the time, never a problem. I would also add one of the automatic bolt releases as well, they work great and makes things much easier when reloading.
