I am looking for a small, light pocketable knife for opening mail, cutting open taped boxes and the like. Currently I have a little no-name knife that is not in good condition anymore. It is a lockback knife with a three inch handle and a 2 1/4 inch blade, and weighs about 1 oz. I would like something similiar.
I considered a Buck Solo, liked it okay but didnt like the steel. Any other suggestions? I could go a bit bigger but probably not smaller. I dont want a keychain knife. I would like something a little substantial.

take a look at the Spyderco Captain ( a really stout small knife) or the Kershaw min-cyclone (1635) - a really comfortable slim design.

How about a Spyderco Spin, Lava or Dragonfly? They are excellent small knives! The Kershaw Mini-Cyclone with ZDP-189 blade, and titanium handles IS the cat's meow.

I like the Spyderco Spin

Blade: Modified Wharncliffe
Lock: Frame Lock (not a liner lock)
Clip: Stainless
Origin: Japan
Blade Length: 1-3/4"
Closed Length: 2-1/4"
Weight: 1.3 oz.
Blade Steel: VG-10
Rockwell: 60-62 Rc.

What about a traditional pocket knife ? AKA "slipjoint"

Spyderco Salt 1. Very close to your size requirements, lockback, and is 1.5oz. H1 steel is supposed to be similar in hardness to AUS-6 but work hardens so after a few sharpenings it gets better.

It seems like some people have some interesting ideas on what constitutes a small, lightweight lockback knife....

This is clearly a job for the Gerber EZ-OUT JR. Plain or partially serrated.

Look at the Fallkniven U2. I also second the Al Mar Hawk. Buck has some smaller gentlemans knives that look very nice for around $20-25, but I can't remember the names. The Case Peanuts are nice if don't have to have a lock.

Benchmade Benchmite II
Looks like a mini Benchmade, very thin.
Locks open and locks closed.
Has a very stout blade, Aus8
No clip, but a hole for a lanyard
$20

Boker Wharcom
Straight edge razor sharp Aus8
Easy to carry, very good grip
Clip and lanyard hole
Excellent
$22

IMO, for the price, for the durability, for the great warranty, for a great fit
and all that it comes with I'd suggest a One Hand Trekker from Victorinox.

My EDC rotation are small pocket knives. My favorites are Almar ultralight talon and the Kershaw Chive. Both great little knives that you will barely notice in your pocket.
