I'm looking for something that's less than 3" closed and as thin as possible while still being somewhat sturdy. I find myself coming back to the Gerber LST, Gerber SLT, and Buck Gent. Any other suggestions? Any opinions on these? Thanks!

Sam

What you are looking for is...
THE MIGHTY CASE PEANUT!!!!

Check out this thread
You'll don't believe how handy it is for his size.

Edit: I didn't realized that you wanted a locking knife, anyway for such a small blade I don't think a locking mechanism is and advantage.

AG Russell has some nice small lockbacks that are very slender and made with higher-grade steel than you'll likely find on a Gerber or Buck.

Too bad these are a bit longer than you seek:

Hello,

When ever this question is asked I always recommend the Spyderco Dragonfly. It has a small blade (2.3") and relatively thin. It has a choil so you can still get a great grip and it comes in all sorts of flavors.

Have a good one,

Chris

two ends of the spectrum, Gayle Bradley Air and Sanrenmu 702 (Klotzli lookalike).

Air (about $130)

SRM 702 (about $10)

I want to also suggest the Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air - Excellent and beautiful knife. Silver twill scales, ti liners, CPM-M4 steel, it's beautiful. I love it.

I would also like to suggest a Curtiss Knive Nano Frame Lock - Very Thin, Ti Frame Lock, CPM-154 steel, Custom Knife, Less than 5inches opened. I love my Liner Lock version and really want to get a Ti Frame Lock version. =]

I agree with Phydeaux. An Al Mar Ultralite would be a great choice.

Kershaw skyline. Light and small but I think it is just the slightest but over 3 inches. But made in USA and very good price

I have a kershaw chill thats super thin and light. There are other small kershaws as well as some small spydercos I've seen.

3" closed is pretty small... Here are some I can think of:

Spyderco Ladybug: 2.5" closed, 0.31" (8mm) thick, back lock
SOG Micron: 2.9" closed, 0.20" (5mm) thick, back lock
Buck 425 (MiniBuck): 2.9" closed, 0.31" (8mm) thick, back lock
Kershaw Chive: 3" closed, 0.28" (7mm) thick, frame lock, pocket clip

If you're willing to go a little over, the Dragonfly would be a great choice. The extra large choil allows you to choke up on the blade and get a decent 3-1/2 finger grip on the handle, giving it the feel of a slightly bigger knife. The others are about 2-1/2 to 3 finger grips (if you compress your fingers together on some). Some that are just over 3" closed:

SOG Flash 1: 3.25" closed, 0.35" (9mm) thick, arc lock, pocket clip
Spyderco Dragonfly2: 3.375" closed, 0.35" (9mm) thick, back lock, pocket clip
Kershaw Scallion: 3.5" closed, ?? thick, frame lock, pocket clip
Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air: 3.5" closed, ?? thick, liner lock

Here's a pic of most of the ones I mentioned. Unfortunately, I don't have a Scallion or Air (:(), so I'm just listing the manufacturer specs. I included the Peanut and a Gerber Bear Grylls Compact Scout (similar in size to the LST) for comparison.

I carried the AG Russell One Hand knife in my wallet for many years, it's tough, flat and locks, another option also from AGs catalog would be the Funny Folder in Titanium and ATS34 steel, a very small, flat, sharp, ultra secure, albeit unusual lock up system.

It is a reasonably priced quality knife, he also used to sell a kydex sheath that could go on a keyring or a ball chain around your neck.

The AG Russel Carbon Fiber lockback folder is exactly what you're looking for. It is a 3in closed knife with VG10 steel. They're pictured (and recommended) up in the second or third post in this thread.

They also make a 2.5in and a 2in version if I remember correctly, but they have titanium scales.

And while the case peanut is a good knife, I find myself not carrying it as much because the thing is too wide for my liking in my pocket. I'd prefer something that was only one layer, which is what it sounds like you're looking for.

Good luck man :).
