Looking for a solid EDC under 3 inches.

Personally, I would get another Delica 4.

But in the interest of trying something new - I'll echo the Native 5 and Para3 LW recs, since it doesn't look like you have any US-made Spydercos yet.

Then as @mak1277 a Mini Grip would let you try out a Benchmade, or maybe a Mini Bugout.

Finally Kershaw has some good options around that price range, like the Leek or Link or Dividend, and you can get some good steel too, like Magnacut (Leek, Dividend) or 20CV (Link).

(but really, give me another Delica and a LynchNW clip and I'm happy.)
part of my brain definitely keeps returning to square one which is to just get another Delica. I ordered the Cold Steel Mini Recon because it does look like pretty crazy value and if it works I may just go with that, I also ordered a Para 3 LW. I agree, time for a US made Spyderco! The Para is one that I keep finding myself returning to looking at in the past couple years.

The Bugout and Mini Grip are also catching my eye. Did they stop making the Mini Griptilian except for one version? I seem to remember there used to be tons of varieties.

Boxes, zip ties, occasionally paracord.
Cool.

I have used the tuff lite effectively for that sort of stuff. But am using the kizer swaggs swayback at the moment.

The sheepsfoot wharncliffe blades are really good for that.

The idea behind the swayback for me was that I wasn't doing many tasks that put much stress on the lock. And i don'tuse the knife for very long. But I was struggling to fiddle the knife in and out of my pocket. And the button flicks open and flicks closed. Which is super convenient for me.

The swaggs with its longer thinner blade works better at doing things like opening letters. The tuff lite with its short flat blade works better at things like cable ties.

They both haven't rusted.

For an equivalent spyderco. The manix is super light and easy to open and close. And is comparable.

Yeah, used to be the 555 (sheepsfoot+opening hole), 556 (drop point+thumbstud) and 557 (tanto+thumbstud), plus full-size versions (550, 551, 553), plus the Ritter Grips (552, 558). 154CM base steel but lots of other options, from D2 to M2 to M390. Grey G10 + 20CV blade was standard production for the drop point and sheepsfoot for a while. Lots of limited editions and some gold classes too.

Now it's down to S30V + black plastic handles for the 550/551/555/556. Maybe we'll see more configurations again in the future - the full-size Barrage got a LE last year and the mini is getting a new (regular production?) config this year, so anything's possible - but I would not place a huge bet on the extended life of the Grip at this point.

I have this one and it’s a great carrying knife, one of Cold Steel’s best EDC knives. You’ll never feel it in your pocket unlike the other Cold Steel monsters I regularly carry

The other one I really like is the Spyderco Lil Native Slipit. Slip joint and really well done. Snaps open with authority. First time I tried it I was like, this is a slip joint? Lightweight (2.5 oz), S30v so stainless, simple and streamlined. Something different.

I ordered a Mini Recon to check it out. Even if I like the Para 3 I ordered, if I like the Mini, at that price I’ll probably just keep it. You’re right- 3.5 oz isn’t crazy, and only .3 more than the Sage 5 which I don’t really notice either. Thanks for the rec on that and the Lil Native. Adding to my down the road list!

I put a Tuff Lite on my list of future options for gift ideas from the family.

Sorry for the loss.

I got get another delica. I thought I lost one and replaced it. After I found it I have double the pleasure. I believe I am up to 3 or 4 now.

My edc is a mnandi since I am in a suit however I haven't found anything to beat a delica. They have a damascus one I have been eyeing.

No problem, happy to help. Here is a pic of the Recon 1 mini alongside the Lil Native Slipit. Two different knives for sure. The Lil Native is an ergonomic masterpiece. But the Recon 1 mini is a very tough and capable knife that carries well and is probably the better all-arounder.

Edit: One more pic with a few Para 3s thrown in for size comparison

The LW Para 3 is the best of the lot btw. It’s been called the perfect Spyderco and I feel that it really lives up to the hype. Mine is in CPM SPY27.

I appreciate it. It really is a loss! It was probably my favorite all around knife to carry. Reading that I’m sure most people would say it’s an obvious choice then to replace it with another one but I wanted to explore some other possibilities. Let’s be honest, at some point I will have another one, some point in the not too distant future or next couple Christmases or Father’s Day’s anyway! I like the idea of that Damascus for a special gift idea from the wife or parents next time they are looking for an idea!

I haven’t seen the thing for months but in a last ditch effort a few days ago I went through every piece of winter clothing I could and I did find the spare keys to both of my E bikes that I thought I lost so I guess that was a silver lining because I was looking into replacing them!

Same version of Para I went with I believe, same steel and it looks like you have the blue? Color looks great on it, I think my wife is going to be jealous although she still has her Delica in purple!

This video impressed the hell out of me and reminded me of the CS videos of old that I used to watch when I was into their stuff more. They absolutely beat the tar out of this thing. Pretty sure this is an older different version but still awesome to watch.

I forgot how ridiculously tough Cold Steel knives are. I never carry the Recon 1 because unlike when I was younger I prefer knives that are actually practical and can be carried in public and used realistically instead of thinking I’m going to use one for self-defense. Once in a while camping it makes an appearance.

I’m not going to lie. Cold Steel folders are my favorite. I love the idea of having something in your pocket that can act like a fixed blade if it had to. What I’ve been carrying lately (SR1 Lite Tanto). So yeah

Was right with you until this ^^^ , at which point my brain exploded ! 🤯

OK ...so, here's a nice Tri-ad ... or maybe one with NO LOCK at all .

This is like suggesting a horse drawn carriage for someone needing a car . :p
Haha, true. Different horses for courses.

I’ve been amazed at how much you can do with a slip joint. Realistically, it’s all I need 99% of the time in my boring suburban life. But if you are going with a lock, go big. All or nothing, that’s my motto 😋

which is exactly why most people that need to 'abuse a lock', just realize the correct answer & go fixed blade - there are so many good options out there now

lots of makers here - check out Horsewright Horsewright stuff - for < 3" I love his simple yet great lines...
but there are so many others here also, take some time to check them out

I'm taking a pic from one of his recent posts - to show an example - but there are so many other great bf makers, take time to look (imho) its worth it

The Wharncliffe Dragonfly is an EDC MVP for me but since that is already ruled out, Swaggs knocked it out of the park with that design. I have the liner-lock version, which I prefer over a button lock. I've been seeing these on sale lately. It's definitely worth checking out if a 3" blade is acceptable. Here is mine with a Convoy flashlight.

If being close to 3" is okay, definitely check out the Kizer Gemini, designed by Ray Laconico. It is one of my all-time favorite knives. This one in N690 and Micarta is a dealer exclusive but there are lots of different versions available. If going smaller really matters, the Kizer Yorkie is another Laconico design and one of my favorite smaller knives. (Note: mine is slightly modified to better fit my hand. The lock-bar access looks cleaner on a stock model.)

You already have a Chaparral!
it is the carbon fiber version. Not something that I want to hop in and out of freshwater lakes and rivers with. I live in Michigan and spend a lot of time in those environments in the summer so that is a requirement as well. The Endura has done the job but it’s big and old.
