Looking for a Spyderco for urban carry.

Caly 3.5. Slices like a demon. A father used it to dispatch a mountain lion that was attacking his son. 'Nuf said.

Caly 3 or 3.5 are good choices.

I will however second the Chokwe that was recommended. It's been discontinued but you can get it fairly cheap right now. $127 is a good price.
It's a really nice knife, good steel, awesome ergonomics, great for EDC, and would make a good SD knife if needed.

The Junior is also something to consider. Very flat profile, packs a good amount of blade, deep choil, compression lock, and wire clip-- that if you ask me, is preferable to not draw attention in urban environments... as opposed to big shiny hourglass etc. ;)

For urban use, how bout the Spyderco Urban? Just kidding, the Spyderco Urban would be terrible for any kind of self defense.

Haha yeah... well, you might be able to scare away your would-be assailant by slicing the hell out of your hand.

I would second the Junior personally. All good points you made.

Thanks, for all the suggestionts. I have a bunch of good options now. I orded the Centofante but I want to have a few knives to rotate with so I have some other choices here as well.

The Southard is more than twice what the OP said his upper limit was. I wouldn't use a Chokwe as a SD knife, there is no thumb ramp or jimping. You could get a waved endura and stay under budget and have one of the fastest opening spyderco's there is.

Yeah, I just saw one. Don't know how they work exactly but they sound like quick opening knives.

I think that's what my favorite Spyderco - Military - is made for! ;)

I'm looking for a good knife with a blade up to 4" for carrying purposes. It's not legal to carry anything larger.

I want something that's relatively easy to have in the pocket and can be equally useful in a defense situation and general cutting applications.

I know this gets suggested so much that it's almost a cliché, but get a Paramilitary 2. It's in your price and size range, and it's a great knife.

Besides, since it seems like you're into collecting as well, you know you're going to end up with one at some point, so might as well just start with it now :)

para 2 is on my "gotta have list". Think the Endura 4 Wave is going on there as well. I like the Native 5 as well.

Manix 2 or Tenacious would both be good choices. One thing to keep in mind: if you are thinking you might have to use the blade in self-defense, your knife will likely be taken as evidence. That stings more the more you have paid for the knife. That's why I carry a Resilience as my more SD oriented blade rather than a Manix 2 XL.

I don't plan to ever use it in SD but I work in a bad neighborhood so it could happen. Yes, this is why I decided to go with a less expensive knife. Not so much because I think it's likely to be evidence so much as if it's something I carry all the time it could be something I lost, stolen or taken by the Cops for whatever reason I didn't want it to be an expensive knife.

How about the new Calypso sprint run, the one with the earth brown handles?

I'm quickly finding that every Spydie is apparently a great EDC knife..;)

I suppose it's mostly true that the majority of them would serve the purpose.

My urban carry knife for self defense is the Merlin/Harpy, unless I know I can get away with a Matriarch. Many cities have dagger/dirk laws and the curved blade of the Harpy takes the knife completely out of that legal arena. Second, the Merlin/Harpy is purpose built for work, not self-defense, thus you are cool if the law says it is illegal to carry a knife with the intent of using it as a weapon. Third, the length of the blade is less than 3" which is a restriction in many areas. Finally, as a self-defense tool, the wicked serrations, the hooked blade and easy opening make it quite useful.

Para2, Sage 1 or PPT

If the Military isn't too big just get one, you will eventually.. :D
