Looking for a tactical lockback

I think I know of what you are looking for. AG Russell makes a line of tactical lockbacks called the "Strikeforce." They are around 4.75 in. closed, VG-10 stainless blades, and Aluminum handles with G-10 inserts. The blades have an oval cutout so that they can be opened with one hand. The pocket clip allows for tip up carry. Best of all, most are on sale for only $79.95. I don't own one, but I know that AG Russell has a great reputation. These look like great knives!

Good luck in your search!

Surprisingly no one has mentioned the Benchmade Ascent and the Ascent II. I happen to also prefer lockbacks - and have been looking for a replacement to my veritable Spyderco Endura.

The BM Ascent is 3.5" blade with HOLE and tip up carry... and there is some eleent of finger guard. Butt ugly tho! The Ascent II is smaller 2.9" blade but only tip down.

What really impressed me was the smoothness of the blade opening (for a lockback).

You also get 154CM steel - all in all not a bad package - I still might get one.

As for the Emerson Hardware series, they are really slim and the blade is 1/8" - really great ergos and finger protection, but not as refined in finish as Spydies or BM. The knife is tip up, but the clip is shiny stainless which is NOT low profile. I had a first prod run so maybe they have changed?

If you don't like the spydies, the Ascents get my vote.

i think the kerambit is pictured at www.kerambit.com i dont think the site is up yet, but i have seen that knifes pic in several mags, dont have a clue if its available/where from, would like to know if it is available though???

Once again, Spyderco is probably your best bet.

There are a lot of FRN models to choose from:

Endura, Rescue, Delica, Native, Spyderhawk, Merlin, Assist, Calypso Jr.,

But if you don't like unlined FRN, there are several other models (some have been discontinued) to choose from:

Chinook, Chinook II, SS Endura, SS Native, SS Delica, SS Police, SS Calypso Jr., Carbon Fiber Police, G-10 Police, Micarta Calypso, Ayoob, Micarta JD Smith, Large Dyad, SS Rescue, SS Rookie, G-10 Rookie, and probably more that I don't know about.

Happy hunting,
Allen.

Katz knives are good, I've got a couple of their blades, but not a folder.

As far as the price of the ER blades, yes they are pricey -- but well worth it. :D

I was going to say the strike forces, then I saw that k man already mentioned them. I would reccomend taking a look at them. They look very solid and well made. (ag russell)

Sifu1A, the folding karambit made by Blade-tech is available from www.karambit.com

I don't know if you can find one anymore but i like the Spyderco Massad Ayoob collaboration. VG-10 steel aluminum scales. Wierd swept foward grip. Great slicer.

Thanks for the many replies, guys. ;)

Nonetheless, the greater majority of those knives are ones that I've glanced over in the past...

How about this.

What folders out there have blades as thick as the Buck-Striders 880/881's???

:)

Thanks for the great suggestions.

Take care.

With also your other requirements?

None, I'm afraid.

I think the B/S's are 3/16" (.1875").

But if you relax your other criteria:

ER, Strider custom, many full-on customs...

ER= Extrema Ratio, more than what you want to pay though, but it is the world's only locking lockback. (as far as I know)

Huh?

QS,

The ERs use a lock on the lockback. It's bolt that shifts across the lockbar and prevents it from being disengaged.

Hmm....

Anyone else??!? I appreciate the applies, but it just seems like none of the folders listed catch my eye. I pulled up some extrema ratio folders and was completely turned off. Those are some of the most assugly knives I've ever seen in my life. I don't generally put a lot of emphasis on aesthetics, but those are just ridiculous. And the price tag doesn't fair too well with me either.

And then someone mentioned the use of a dual locking mechanism? That whole idea kind of bewilders me, as I feel it is overcomplicated and redundant. Instead of making a lock for a lock, why don't they just make the first lock a good one? I tried out a CRKT LAWKS system and felt that the whole idea was sort of lame... But hey, just my opinion...

So how about I relax my criterion a little?

I still want a thick blade, but am willing to go down to the MINIMUM of .12". Blade length between 3.5" and 3.0". Lockback.

Ideas??

Thanks very much.

I just got an Emerson Hardwear Endeavor in a trade and it's awesome. They can be had for around $45 or so from Cumberland Knives and Bayou Laforche. The Cold Steel medium Voyager tanto and the Spyderco Delica are also nice.

Clay

The Spyderco Chinook is known for being a heavy-duty knife. It was designed as a fighter, but it has everything you need for utilty too. The wide 4" blade has a fine point and a lot of belly. The lock is MBC rated, so you can count on it taking almost any abuse. For just over $100 you can't do better.

if blade thickness is an issue get a katz or a spydee chinook

got a katz cheetah happy with it it´s heavy thou. you want to look at their police and military models.

Bquinlan, Have you looked at the tip?
I think it was designed as a fighter.
The designer is James A. Keating
He is one of the world's best knife fighting experts.
BTW, I owned the Chinook, and I thought it was really, really hard to open.
Some that will also fit your criteria (I'm pretty sure) are the SOGWinder and TOMCAT. BTW, I've got a SOGWinder w/ kraton inserts if interested. Too thick for me.
