Looking for an outdoor folder

I would take a look at a Kabar Mule. Never had one but everything I've read about them has been positive!!

X2 That knife was my first thought. I have one and can't recommend it enough. Cold Steel Pocket Bushman seems good too but you can't close it one handed so that's an issue unless you can let that go (and it's only about $25).

a friend of mine brought his Cold steel american lawman on a camping trip we took and that thing is a workhorse

To answer sirahren’s question better the kind of tasks shown in the review are what I would like the knife to be able to do. http://funditor.110mb.com/Cold Steel Recon 1 Review.html
That’s also where I got the idea a CS Recon 1 would be a good idea, but since no one else has mentioned it I’m guessing most don’t agree.

Once again I’m sure that spidy mill or para would work great but I really can’t afford one right now.

Just thought I would mention I don’t really have anything against lockbacks per-say it’s just that the few times I have handled them they felt awkward and I’m going to be buying this knife without handling it first so I just tend to lean toward what I know is a bit more natural. However seeing as so many people suggest them I may have to re-consider.

That RAT folder is intriguing.

Thanks for all the help guys. Keep the ideas coming.

Everyone needs a Buck 110 Folding Hunter, a great 3.75" bladed lockback knife with brass bolsters and rosewood scales, available at $25 or so at Wally World - and US made! I've carried one in the boonies for years - as well as in a back pocket in urban boonies. A classic knife, also available in other metals - S30V, 154CM, etc. The Buck 'Custom Shop' will make you a one-of-a-kind for <$90 delivered - with S30V. Below are an assortment of my 110s - the far right being the basic, ie, $25 W-W variant:

The teardrop Damascus bladed one was much more, of course! While a challenge to one hand open, they can be easily closed with one hand and your side/thigh - just be careful!

I did say that you will often find a Para or a Millie for about $75-90 on BST here... patience can be rewarding...

Sorry. I tend to automatically check online for anything to do with selling. Also what part of the forum is BST?

Re the R.A.T Model 1 folder you might want to check out this thread before getting one. This explains why this knife is now so inexpensive.

Thanks for the heads up on that one.

I like the Griptilian and the JYDII. I know this may seem like a silly question but has anyone ever had an experiance where a Kershaw has accidentally opened up in pocket? I haven't owned one but when ever I have handled them they just seemed so easy to flip open.
I'm still wondering if anyone has handled a CS Recon 1 and if they had anything to say either way about it.

Most, if not all Kershaw speed safe knives have a lock on them so they wont open in your pocket.

Not 100% correct. The Leeks do, along with some of the other smaller ones. The Boa (a big knife) has a spine lock. The majority of Kershaws that have the SpeedSafe feature don't have locks, as the SpeedSafe itself holds the blade in the closed position. :)

well i guess I should have been more specific. most of the speedsafe models with index finger "flippers" have safeties. At least when I used to buy kershaws they did.

What model Buck 110 is the second one from the right in your pic?

That is the Buck 560. Out of production a few years now, they can still be found in the secondary market. There are a few different variations, most of which are minor, mostly handle coatings or the lack thereof. The one in the pic looks like it may have the "champagne" handles. Nice knives, I own a few. One is a user that gets a lot of kitchen time (they clean up easy so I don't have to worry about getting them slopped up).

Look no further than any of the Salt folders from Spyderco.

I have the griptilian,Recon 1,and endura. If you're looking for a heavy duty folder that can take a beating, that would be the Recon 1.Without a doubt. The review you mention says pretty much everything. What I don't like about this knife is it has a fairly wide handle when compared to the grip or endura in regard to comfort in the hand.

It happens that I read one of cold steel's customer letters of a person that used their recon 1 as a prybar to open a door to a burning building and it survived with just a few scratches.

I don't know how believeable it is but hope this helps.

Thanks. It does help alot. The review seemed legitemate but I wanted to check with other people to see if they thought it would be worth it before comiting. From most of what I have read it seems that the PE clip point would be prefered for outdoor use. Does this seem right?
