Looking for an outdoor folder

X2 That knife was my first thought. I have one and can't recommend it enough. Cold Steel Pocket Bushman seems good too but you can't close it one handed so that's an issue unless you can let that go (and it's only about $25).

I had a Mule, and sold it. The ONLY complaint I had about the knife was that it was cartoonishly large for a folder. Otherwise it was rock solid. No play at all when open, and the thumb studs were very easy to rotate the blade with. If you do like your folding blades that big and burly, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

Thanks. It does help alot. The review seemed legitemate but I wanted to check with other people to see if they thought it would be worth it before comiting. From most of what I have read it seems that the PE clip point would be prefered for outdoor use. Does this seem right?

Yeah, the general concensus is that the plain edged clip point is better suited for outdoor use like whittling wood, etc. It also depends who you ask, some even prefer a tanto blade for the outdoors but that's just come down to preference.

Re the R.A.T Model 1 folder you might want to check out this thread before getting one. This explains why this knife is now so inexpensive.

I haven't handled the Model 1 myself, but R.A.T. is a good company.

I have the RAT-1, First Production Run and it is a great knife. I recently acquired a Sebenza and put the RAT away but miss carrying it.

Every man should own a 110 and it is the one knife I carry every day. I should have bought the 560 from BCCL when I had the offer. I screwed up.

A RAT-3 for my BOB is next.

I was price shopping to help me decide. yourcornerstore.com has good prices but some of their descriptions seem off. Has anyone had any dealings with the site?

Ohooh, please don't ban me;)

I think the AXIS lock isn't the right lock for outdoor use. If your knife will get dirty, and it will, they lock doesn't work anymore.
That is strange. Two years ago I took my Mini Grip though a torture test. Let me describe.
BM mini grip 555. Took a mixture of mud, river sand, P1 gravel and mixed it all up in a 5 gallon bucket. Using a piece of paracord I suspended the closed 555 near the center of mixture and placed in a walk in freezer @ 26f for 72 hours. When I retrieved the 555 using a hammer and chisel, I found it to work flawlessly. I only had to tap out the mixture by hand. Shame I didn't video tape it for youtube. Maybe I'll do it again for all you skeptics.

Delica 4 plain edge-non wave

i know its not the greatest steel or the biggest, but for the last 3 years i have edc'ed it and brought to over 25 state and national parks, been arrested with it (and gotten it back), I recently replaced it with a delica 4, and all i can say is its gotten even better. I suggest the plain edge, since you say your supplimenting it with a bigger knife. the big knife will do all your heavy cutting, and the delica will be perfect for doing all your fine work, like carving, and dicing up food.

Actually this will most likely be for when I can't take a bigger knife somewhere.

well if its your only knife then even more of a reason to get the plain edge!!! it just makes so many more tasks easy in the backcountry. plus the del 4 has a lanyard hole just so loss is almost impossible if precaution is taken.

I got confused reading this. you first suggested the Delica 4, then said you carried it for 3 years, then replaced it with another delica 4?

Not the greatest steel? unless you had an old all stainless delica with AUS6, VG-10 is an exceptional steel. It's got to be my favorite. I like to compare it just under S30V in edge retention, and I can sharpen it easily and it's got great corrosion resistance.

i had a delica 3 pe (vg-10) then i lost/replaced it with a delica 4 pe (vg-10 frn)

in my opinion vg-10 is a great steel and when i said not the greatest steel it was a pretty much direct reference to s30v having better edge retention and h1 having no corrosion.

on a side note all the blades (non multitool or axe) i carry into the woods are vg-10

-fallkniven f1
-delica 4

one last smaller sidenote
while i really love the delica 4 i found the delica 3 to be just as durable and usable while it weighed a bit less then the 4 (due to the steel liners)
if you are a weight conscious backpacker I suggest finding the delica 3

o ok. gotcha.

I can understand the very slight weight difference due to the lack of liners, but even with the liners, I still cant feel the thing in my pocket, so I don't think it's really a big deal. My beef with the Delica 3 was that I hated the thiner blade/tip and the ergos. I love the jimping on the D4s.

As far as blade steel, to each his own. I've found that cuts just as good as S30v, but like you said, doesn't hold it quite as long (the difference is irrelevant to me). I think it does hold an edge longer than 154CM and is about the same on corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.

I's say get a Spyderco Military or Para Military, they do cost a bit more then you wanted to spend but they'll last forever.
