Looking for another Becker

First off I wanted to say that I got a BK2 last year and really like the knife a lot. Unfortunately so did a camping buddy of mine who had just lost their knife. I felt kind of bad for them and the knife they had (brand to remain nameless) was not even in the same ballpark as the Becker, so, I gifted them the knife.

They were ecstatic so it went to a good home. Since that time, I have really missed the knife and am in the market for another Becker. I want an all around good camp knife and something that I can pound on firewood with, split and the like.

I am stuck between the BK2 or the BK7 and wondered what the advantages to one over the other might be other than blade length. I also noticed that the BK5 got a lot of fanfare lately as knife of the year but I am thinking it might not be as robust. I figured you guys would be the best ones to ask opinions of.

This one will not be gifted.

My old friend...

For purely wood working, I like the drop point of the BK2 much better. It doesn't tear up the baton like the swedge on the BK7 and BK9 does.

Also, I hear that the BK2 chops just about as well as the BK7, if not a bit better, because of the extra weight that it has.

The only not quite positive thing I can say about the BK2 right now is that the blade length is a bit short for some of the firewood I have around my place when I go camping, so I'm currently looking for something a bit larger to help out around camp. I won't wear whatever it is around camp though, like I will with the BK2.

And about the 5... Check out the passaround thread for some photos and reviews where people really wail on them. They might not be as sturdy as the BK2, but they seem like they should hold up to pretty much anything.

*disclaimer, I don't actually own a BK5, BK7 or BK9

Well, really any one of them will do the job, quite well.

I personally give the nod to the BK2, its my first choice in steel. Period.

Seconded by the BK9, its just a big ass workhorse, that covers alot of ground. And thigh.

Third would be the BK7, the size and weight make it probably the most versitile knife in the BKT lineup. Nuff sed.

Fourth would be the MagCamp. Not that there is anything that the others can't do, that the 5 can't, I just don't have enough time behind the baton with it. I do know that you CAN smash it through seasoned hardwood. I do know that you can filet a trout with ease with it. I do know that you can carve with it. Its really not any thinner stock than the the others, it starts at 3/16" like the rest do, but with the distal taper, and swedge, folks tend to the think its not strong enough. Ta hell with that, its just as tough as the 7.

So, really, the choice is yours, and if you are looking or another knife to REPLACE your BK2, you won't find it, but there are other knives will do you as good. I would say the 7 or 5 as a good all around choice for the belt.

I think I am leaning toward another 2 because I miss the one I gave up. It really was quite perfect. I have noticed some of the Beckers listed mentioning cro-van but I did not see that on the 2. Is this something new that will be coming out on all Beckers or is it just limited to a few select models? I do know when that new mini companion comes and and the machax I am going to be in debt. Those look like some must have blades right there.

As far as I know, all of the Beckers are 1095 Cro Van(other than the remora), which is supposed to be a bit better than normal run of the mill 1095.

And yes... the tweeners are excellent looking. I can't wait to get my hands on the mini BK2 :).

As a proud owner of the 7 and the 2 I would say pick up the 2. I fear if you get the 7, it will have the poor luck of being compared with the 2. And the 7 is a knife all it's own.

In sort, usual Becker Forums answer: Buy the Bk2, then get them all when you can.

you had a 2, you loved the 2 -- buy another 2.
Of course, there was a slight modification to the 2 last year, so it won't feel exactly the same in hand, but it'll be just as tough and maybe even a better chopper. (relief cuts in the handle to move the balance point forward)

That's my problem. I'm the one that goes in the store and finds a shirt I like and buys every color they make. This could get dangerous. I saw a Becker up on Ebay that really is calling my name. Guess it's an older model. The listing called it a Brute. Now that is a hunk of steel for sure.

I do like the overall blade shape of the 2 more than the clip blade look but I do love the elevated thumb ramp on the 7.

Seems like the most logical thing to do doesn't it. Do you know exactly what the mods were?

I want the brute so bad! I'll just have to stem my lust with a Machax and a pair of Tweeners, and a bk9, and a......

I hear ya. It's up to 113.00 right now and there's another day or so to go. You know its going to turn into a shoot out right before the auction ends. Still, it is a beautiful knife.

What I would really like is to find someone to do some blue jean micarta on a 2. Some real faded blue jean. Think that would look really sharp on a black blade. I am always finding tutorials about how to make it but I'm too lazy to try.

Its 1095 CV. Better resists corroding, and it a little tougher.

If you had one with a tang extension, you won't get a different knife now, than you had. Same everything.

Get the 2, then go in order from there. You won't regret it.

default is 1095cv as you've said. except those that are not :)

the remoras are 440a

the BK77s are s30v

the sanmai BK13s are of course, san-mai... hitachi white carbon steel folded between some kind of stainless

and uh, perhaps some other oddness now and again

given that the brute and patrol machete will be remade in the [near] future... unless you HAVE to have an older model, it's probably not cost effective. just sayin' :)

Buy Becker :)

The BK 2 is nice but if your gonna go for the BK7 just go ahead & get the BK9 instead ! The BK9 is my favorite Becker...but you cant go wrong with either of them !
