Hello knifemakers!,
I have heard a lot of talk about Bohler steels, I have talked a lot about them, have tried a few and LOVE them, hear other people are loving them. I've heard some of their new high end steels are set to take the map in a lot of catagories, namely vanadis 4e in cutting competitions. One thing I continually hear is the question of availability, "that looks great, but where to get it? , minumum thickness... etc"
Well I have spoken to the wonderful women at my local Bohler office, who has been supplying me with knife thickness pieces of steel sized to my requests, and I told her about all this discussion and the whispering of wanting BU steels at knife specs and non-industrial sized ordering. I told her there was a huge untapped market of blade crafters they would be wise to work with. Do you want to know what she said??...... "Send them my way."
:) For those of us looking at the usual supply sites and trying to navigate Bohler sites to find a supplier with any interest in this type of size ordering, THIS IS HUGE!

Her name is Fran, she is the operations manager at the Auburn Massachusetts Bohler office and her number is. 1-508-757-3500

She will set you up on their order roster and she has been a saint in finding what I have searched for and she made it clear she would do so for you as well! Spread the word of this good news!

Happy and safe grinding, and may all your blades be sharp ... - Blackhands

Cool! Thanks to guys like Chuck, we already have a bit of an in with the folks who handles sales for the strip steel division that brings in stuff like AEB-L and 15N20. It's interesting and good that these folks seem to have gotten a bit more proactive with the broader knife community since Voestalpine bought them.

I wonder just how small an order they would consider by talking with Fran? I can easy see ordering $100 worth, but that's such a tiny order.....

I'm looking for 800-1000 lbs of 3/16" thick ... I'll post here if Fran has anything I can use

My orders have all been in the $50 range, single piece at a time, 3 orders so far and this was exactly what I discussed and got the greenlight for, that's why I am so excited! I know I'm doing a knife or two at a time and a lot of people are probably in the same boat and same boat of money being limited to doing one or two pieces of good steel at a time.

well ill be ..about 1 mile from me..thanks for the headsup

Tim, that's awesome! Glad I could help, and cool to know there's some knife makers in the area, I've grown up in Blackstone Valley, definitely headed to your website now and join the mailer.

You do some amazing work! I love that interlocking handle design. I'm sure they will be very glad to hear from you, and glad to see I wasn't making it up how strong the knifemakers market is, a great outfit like yours is two exits away! I'm two exits south from you too by the way, small world!

Knife makers market -- when I met the NJ Steel Baron he mentioned how amazed he was when he realized the size of that market. Keep asking and maybe you'll wake up more suppliers.

Sorry to be off topic. I went to kindergarten - 2nd grade living in Rochedale, and used to attend the First Baptist Church in North Oxford.

Here in Argentina the Bohler distributor caters our market fairly well. I'm sure there will be a larger menu of steels.
K110 d2, k460 o1, k720 o2 (I love it), n695 440c, etc
Ask about their superclean steels.
More
Vanadis 4 extra (which was cloned and named cpm4v)
M390
S390
N690
And if they carry Uddeholm, as they usually do, ask for aebl, 15n20 (usually sold for the sawmill industry as uhb 15n20 in thicknesses above 1.2mm) and many more.

I did have someone from voestalpine reach out to me after being in the blade mag showcase a couple year ago. I just didnt realize they actually have stock in Auburn. That is very cool if I decide to order aebl in bulk I can pick it up there. I have to say though Alpha knife supply is so convenient with sizes and availability, and usps shipping, they are still my go to for small quantity orders. I think they are also adding website purchasing options now too.

Ha, no way! I've lived in Rochdale 3 times, preschool, 19yo and 22yo,,. .All over the Northbridge area all growing up, 'bout every town in blackstone valley, lol, now west a little. That's pretty cool. I shared your page on Facebook, I'm hoping to get to where you are so looking up to you, I got your mailer reply, maybe we could meet up someday, you can show me how you get from point a to b.

That is definitely the idea! Especially with such insane tool steels being produced now a days, a good time to be playing with steel, and for sure want to have it all available!

Blackhands, did you get a list of steels they carry? I tried to find a supply list, and don't want to bug a busy person just to get a list.

Wow. First person I've ever met in the last 30 years that even knew that town existed. Lol. Lived like 2 doors diwn from the post office next to the little creak. Been 35+ years. 23 since I've been to MA.

Was that Jeff Sinko?
