Looking for Bohler Udderholm Blade Steels? Check this out!

Here in Argentina the Bohler distributor caters our market fairly well. I'm sure there will be a larger menu of steels.
K110 d2, k460 o1, k720 o2 (I love it), n695 440c, etc
Ask about their superclean steels.
More
Vanadis 4 extra (which was cloned and named cpm4v)
M390
S390
N690
And if they carry Uddeholm, as they usually do, ask for aebl, 15n20 (usually sold for the sawmill industry as uhb 15n20 in thicknesses above 1.2mm) and many more.

Is k720 about the same as 1095 cv?

Was that Jeff Sinko?

Thank you! I had been in contact with Jeff last year and had to postpone an order. When trying to find his info (forgot his name) I could not find it in my emails. Just searched Sinko and found them!

It is O2/1.2842 and compared to 1095 CV (Sharon 0170-6, 50 100B) it has about the same carbon, about 40% of the vanadium, about 60% chrome, no molybdenum and 4 times the amount of manganese, like 2%.It is supposed to be a very nice mono-steel, but where it really shines is in damascus. With that much manganese, it will get as dark as the inside of your hat. ;)

Wow. First person I've ever met in the last 30 years that even knew that town existed. Lol. Lived like 2 doors diwn from the post office next to the little creak. Been 35+ years. 23 since I've been to MA.

Ha, I used to wash the trucks for the trash guys behind the PO in the same building when I was a teen living in whitinsville would get dropped off on the weekends and when I lived there last I lived right on Providence road a block south from the mill at the corner down from the PO. I worked at the Riverdale mill for just shy of two years, integrity fence douglas for 5 before that. Spindle and splice at the mill, that really got my interest in machining flying, and did all mechanical drawing in high school. I've looked at the members here, over 300,000, from all over the world, but still you run into people, pretty cool!

Jeff is now with Bestar. Monday was his first day in Atlanta. He is going to check on possible opportunities to get access to smaller amounts of their steel.

Blackhands: I just talked with Fran on phone and am preparing an email to her for a quote, but I can't find AEB-L on the website and she didn't know what alloy AEB-L was. The only ones she knew were the Bohler alloys, not the Uddeholm alloys. Perhaps if I mention it's an Uddeholm alloy she might find it?

I'm looking at the Elmax and M390 alloys on the Bohler site. It will be interesting to see what prices she's got on them.

Ken, AEB-L and 15N20 come from the Voestalpine strip steel division which is separate from the tool steel division. Jef Sinko worked at that office until this month. Chuck and Aldo are the go to guys for the strip products.

OK, thanks, that explains why it didn't show up on the Bohler site, and is VERY hard to find on the Uddeholm site. Aldo only has AEB-L in .110", and Chuck at Alpa is also out of the thinner stuff. I'm wanting material in the .070" range for kitchen knives. Love that thin stuff for slicers.

[/IMG] Here is the AISI to Bohler to Udderholm equivalents chart I found.... somewhere... Lol. It's a pdf from I think it was an Udderholm .eu site... it is only the powder metals though. They do definitely need to streamline the pdfs but the industrial manufacturing tooling purchasing does NOT function as knife steel buying so it's understandable, I'll forgive them ;) I'm on day two grinding the caldie, had to spend a day and a half rearranging my storage room back into a functional shop, spring cleaning and all, after finishing my last knife I had awhile I wasn't doing much, holidays and all that. I'll tell you it's good to be back to the stone, and to have the workshop set up even better after the clean out. The kids toys are next.... :) lol, they got more toys then I got junk and that's saying something!

The problems that every steel producing country in Europe seems to have a different designation for even the very common steels, so some times is it a bit to tough to keep up. For example, what we call 52100 also falls into the general L3 category on some places, but is called 102Cr6 and 1.2067 in the German speaking countries and SUJ 2 in Japan.

I think its not.

Okay it just looked kinda similiar on paper to me. Seems k720 has a lot more manganese and less chromium, vanadium and little to no nickel. So would that then make it stronger with less wear resistance comparatively?

This is wonderful news. I love Bohler steels and I've spoken with multiple reps trying to get a line on a solid supply with no avail. They've also been pretty rude. Great find Blackhands, can't wait to contact her.
