Hello all-

I've been looking for a decent hat for spring/summer/fall use but can't quite find one in a lower price range. I know about the Tilley's, and they are really cool, but I don't think I'm going to be able to drop ~$70 on a hat right now.

Has anyone seen or does anyone have this guy:

I'm looking for something wide-brimmed, breathable, waterproof, and in at 7 & 5/8 size with the ability to have the sides of the brim latch to the top. Packable, floating would be nice. I think that's asking for a Tilley but without the Tilley price tag, so I may be answering my own question here...

Not interested in a plain booney right now.

Thanks much if anyone's seen that guy.

Spooky, havn't seen that one..I have a wool felt fedora style I can give you if you like doesn't suit me I feel to much like indiana jones in it...

Really nice of you Riley! I think I might not play that role too well either though, my whip is in the shop. ;) Thanks though mate!

I also found this guy at REI-

I like the looks of it, got some good reviews... Maybe not as breathable as the first.

After having a Tilley for a year or two now, I say fork out the money for the Tilley. It hurts to spend that much for a minute or two but then feels really good for a long long time.

Spooky,
Not only is the Tilley a fantastic hat, if you ever lose it or destroy it they will replace it for free. When you add that into the cost it doesn't seem so expensive.

weird, er, great minds think alike, I guess. :D
I celebration of the beginning of another year of hot-weather hiking here on the wasatch, I just ordered my first tilley earlier today, a TH4. didn't really have a lot of choice since my melon is huge, and most XLs are too small, and none of the one size fits all actually fit my size 8 noggin.
spooky, if you poke around you can find a tilley for a lot less than retail. I think I paid about 20 less for mine.

Is the Seattle Sombrero out of your price range? Awesome hat - I think it was Backpacker Magazine's Gear of the Year a few years ago.

Lightweight, H2O proof, adjustable, sides fold up/down, comfortable, breathable, stuff it easily in a pack or pocket and it comes in woods friendly colors.

On sale right now at REI for under $30 (normally around $50) The four reviews on REI rank it a 5 out of 5 stars...and I've gotta concur.

I picked up a pretty sweet waxed cotton hat at LL Bean for $40 (partly with a gift card) a while ago. It's not on their website right now, but if I have time, I'll post pics. Totally waterproof, and a sort of classy feel.

Get a boonie hat from the Army/Navy store. I wear one all the time in the woods. I have several different camo paterns & solid colors. they work great in the rain & provide good eye shade because of the wide brim & cost $10 to $14.

I wear a beat up Wrangler cowboy hat...black lacquered straw. Not waterPROOF but highly water resistant, wide brim, does for 3 seasons here, lots of sun and rain and keeps it all off. Breathes well, paracord hatband makes it kinda tactical!

I never get why they aren't more poular on the coast, perfect hat for the weather.

Mine's a Wrangler Riata black straw all-weather, too! And, on the East Coast!

There you go, take it from a high-school dropout and a heavily armed computer nerd, Wranglers are the way to go!

I needed a new hat, since my favorite one finally but the dust 9the one i wore in the tomahawk pic). So, down in New Mexico about 3-4 years ago, I found it in a shop and so picked it up.

Here's me a month or so ago in upstate NY during that trip. Checking the Winchester '94 for a possible jam (I was shooting holes in the ice of the pond 100 yards away to test out some new ammo), wearing the Wrangler hat and layered up for warmth, making me look like the stay-puff man.

I've been surprised about that myself here in Vancouver, given the amount of rain we get. I wear a Charlie 1 Horse western hat or an Australian Outback oilskin outback hat around town or on the trails. Both keep the incessant rain off and save me the hassle of an umbrella or hood.

I've been wearing lighter weight cloth bucket hats since I backed off the constant ball cap thing. So I got a couple of fedoras. One is pretty casual, leather band, grommets, for the woods. Most recent is more Indiana Jones, brown - I've got the whip to go with it.

I prefer the Filson Packer Hat. It is oiled tin cloth, so can get a little hot in the summer, but I still wear it in 90+ temps. It meets all your other qualifications. Ya...a little Indy-ish, but I don't wear it unless I'm going into the deep woods anyway.
